Cutting Instructions

Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. Strips are cut across the width of fabric WOF (perpendicular to selvedges) unless otherwise stated. All seams are sewn with 1/4" seam unless otherwise stated. Label all pieces.

Fabric A:

  • Fussy cut one 23 1/2" x 42 1/2" rectangle centered on the design. (Center Panel)

Fabric B:

  • Cut five 4 1/2" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end and cut two 4 1/2" x 53 1/2" strips and two 4 1/2" x 46 1/2" strips. (Outer Border)

Fabric C:

  • Cut two 8 1/2" squares. (Blocks)

Fabric D:

  • Cut two 8 1/2" squares. (Blocks)

Fabric E:

  • Cut two 8 1/2" squares. (Blocks)

Fabric F:

  • Cut two 8 1/2" squares. (Blocks)

Fabric G:

  • Cut two 8 1/2" squares. (Blocks)

Fabric H:

  • Cut five 4 1/2" x WOF strips; sub-cut forty 4 1/2" squares. (Blocks)
  • Cut one 1 1/2" x WOF strip; sub-cut four 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles. (Pieced Borders)

Fabric I:

  • Cut six 2 1/2" x WOF strips. (Binding)
  • Cut five 2 1/4" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end and cut four 2 1/4" x 42 1/2" strips. (Sashing)

Inner Border:

  • Cut three 2" x WOF strips. Sew the strips together end to end and cut two 2" x 46 1/2" strips.

Piecing Instructions

Note: Pay attention to the unit orientations while assembling the various components.

Step 1 & 2: Creating Unit 1

Place one 4 1/2" Fabric H square on the top left corner of one 8 1/2" Fabric D square, right sides together. Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle 1/4" away from the sewn seam. Follow the diagram for seam direction to add a 4 1/2" Fabric H square to each of the remaining corners of the 8 1/2" Fabric D square to make one Unit 1 square. Repeat to make a second Unit 1 square. (Diagrams 1-4 show this process).

Step 3: Creating Units 2-5

Repeat the process described in steps 1-2, referring to diagrams for fabric identification, placement, and orientation, to make two of each unit square for Unit 2 through Unit 5. (Diagrams 5-6 illustrate the construction of Units 2, 3, 4, and 5 using Fabrics E, G, F, and C respectively, combined with Fabric H squares).

Note: If your panel does not measure 42 1/2" wide, trim the panel and 2 1/4" Fabric I rectangles to the same length. You may need to trim the block rows in Steps 3-4 to that length as well.

Step 4: Assembling Block One

Sew together one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H rectangle, one Unit 1 square, one Unit 2 square, one Unit 3 square, one Unit 4 square, one Unit 5 square, and one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H rectangle, in that order from left to right, to make one 8 1/2" x 42 1/2" Block One rectangle. (Diagram 7 shows this layout).

Step 5: Assembling Block Two

Sew together one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H rectangle, one Unit 5 square, one Unit 4 square, one Unit 3 square, one Unit 2 square, one Unit 1 square, and one 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" Fabric H rectangle, in that order from left to right, to make one 8 1/2" x 42 1/2" Block Two rectangle. (Diagram 8 shows this layout).

Step 6: Constructing the Quilt Center

Sew together one 2 1/4" x 42 1/2" Fabric I strip, the Block One rectangle, one 2 1/4" x 42 1/2" Fabric I strip, the 23 1/2" x 42 1/2" Fabric A rectangle, one 2 1/4" x 42 1/2" Fabric I strip, the Block Two rectangle, and one 2 1/4" x 42 1/2" Fabric I strip, lengthwise and in that order from top to bottom, to make the 42 1/2" x 46 1/2" Quilt Center. (Diagram 9 illustrates this assembly).

Quilt Assembly

Step 7: Adding Borders

Sew one 2" x 46 1/2" Fabric I strip to each side of the Quilt Center. Sew one 4 1/2" x 46 1/2" Fabric B strip to each side of the Quilt Center. Sew one 4 1/2" x 53 1/2" Fabric B strip to the top and bottom of the Quilt Center to make the quilt top. (The Quilt Diagram on page 4 provides a visual guide).

Finishing

Step 8: Preparing Backing

Prepare backing using two widths of fabric. Press seams open. Trim to 61" x 62".

Step 9: Layering and Basting

Layer the quilt, batting, and backing. Baste layers together.

Step 10: Quilting

Quilt as desired.

Step 11: Trimming

Trim layers even with the quilt top, squaring corners.

Step 12: Binding

Attach 2 1/2" Fabric I binding strips using your favorite method.
