DRIPPAIL Drip Repair & Expansion Kit
This kit provides commonly needed parts to keep your drip irrigation system in top working order. Components are ideal for use with the 1/4" tubing section of the system, where many breaks and other problems can occur.
Maintenance Tips
At the start of each season and regularly throughout the season:
- Inspect your drip system closely to be sure all plants are being watered evenly.
- Wilted or dry plants may signal that the irrigation components in that area are not watering correctly.
- Flush the system to remove any sediment that can clog small openings of your watering devices.
- Use the parts in this kit to repair leaks or clogs, adjust flow to individual plants, and to extend your system to other planting areas.
Troubleshooting and Repair
Repairing Broken Tubing
Leaks caused by a string trimmer or wear and tear.
Steps:
- Cut and remove broken section.
- Use Barbed Couplings or Barbed Tees to join new tubing section.
Diagrams illustrate cutting damaged tubing with scissors and joining the sections using 1/4" barbed couplings or tees.
Replacing a Clogged Emitter
Plants drying out may indicate a clogged emitter.
Steps:
- Use Emitter Installation Tool to pry the old emitter from the tubing.
- Plug the hole with 1/4" Tubing Plug.
- Choose appropriate new Spot Watering Emitter flow rate (0.5 GPH Blue, 1.0 GPH Black, or 2.0 GPH Red).
- Insert new Spot Watering Emitter and reconnect 1/4" tubing.
- Recommended: Replace 1/4" tubing and stake.
Diagrams show using the Emitter Installation Tool to remove an old emitter, plugging the hole with a 1/4" Tubing Plug, inserting a new emitter, reconnecting the tubing, and replacing the stake.
Adjusting Flow for Growing Plants
Scenario: Not enough moisture (plant wilt)
Option A: Replace a single emitter
Steps:
- Cut tubing behind the emitter.
- Use the Emitter Installation Tool to insert new high flow emitter.
- Cut short length of 1/4" tubing.
- Attach the tubing to emitter and re-stake.
- Cap the end with a Bug Guard.
Diagrams illustrate cutting tubing, inserting a new high-flow emitter with the installation tool, connecting a short tubing piece, re-staking, and capping the end with a Bug Guard.
Option B: Add a second staked emitter
Steps:
- Cut tubing behind the current emitter.
- Use the Emitter Installation Tool to insert a 1/4" Tee.
- Cut and run two new lengths of 1/4" Tubing to each side of plant.
- Insert emitters and stake in place.
- Cap the ends with Bug Guards.
Diagrams show cutting tubing, inserting a 1/4" Tee with the installation tool, running new tubing lengths to the plant, inserting emitters, staking them, and capping the ends.
Expanding Your Watering Coverage
New plants require water.
Option A: Start a new 1/4" tubing run
Steps:
- Using a 1/4" Barbed Coupling, start a new 1/4" Tubing run, joining it directly to your 1/2" distribution tubing if available.
- Use 1/4" Barbed Tees to branch off to different planting areas.
- Insert appropriate flow Spot Watering Emitters inline near each plant. Stake in place using 1/4" Tubing Stakes and Bug Caps.
Diagrams illustrate starting a new tubing run with a 1/4" Barbed Coupling, branching off with 1/4" Barbed Tees, and inserting emitters with stakes.
Option B: Extend an existing 1/4" tubing run
Steps:
- If there is a plugged end in existing tubing, cut behind the plug and insert a 1/4" Coupling (Figure 1A). Or cut existing tubing and insert a 1/4" Barbed Tee (Figure 1B).
- Connect new 1/4" Tubing to that fitting, running it to the additional plants.
- Insert appropriate flow Spot Watering Emitters inline near each plant. Stake in place using 1/4" Tubing Stakes and Bug Caps.
Diagrams show cutting tubing to insert a 1/4" Coupling or Tee, connecting new tubing, and inserting emitters with stakes.
