Introduction
The NSA320 allows you to share files and back up data on your home network. You can also play video, music, and photos stored on the NSA320 using a regular computer or a multimedia client like the DMA-2500.
How it Works
Connect the NSA320 to your home network. The device is then accessible to all users, who can store their files or backups on it. The DMA-2500 can play multimedia content stored on the NSA320 and display it on your TV. You can connect an additional USB (flash) drive to the NSA's USB port. Pressing the COPY/SYNC button once will transfer the contents of the USB drive to the NSA, instantly backing up the drive's content.
Before You Begin
Place your NSA320 behind a firewall or other network device that protects it from potential internet attacks.
On the included CD ?, you will find the user manual along with instructions for the NSA320. This quick user guide will show you how to:
- Install a hard drive
- Connect the NSA320 to the network
- Access the NSA320
- Log in to the NSA320
Required Components:
- NSA320
- CD containing NAS Starter Utility and user manual (CD is included)
- Power cable and external power adapter
- Ethernet cable (cable is included)
- One or two hard drives compatible with SATA I or SATA II (3 Gbit/s) (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) standard with a 15-pin SATA power connector
- Hard drive brackets (4) and screws (8) (are included)
- Phillips head screwdriver ?️ for attaching hard drives
- USB cable (optional: you will only need this if you plan to connect an external USB drive to the NSA320). Some USB drives may require their own external power supply.
- Computer with an Ethernet port
- Network device, such as a switch, router, or hub (optional)
Installing the Hard Drive
⚠️ The hard drive you insert into the NSA320 should not contain any files. If it contains any data, this data will be permanently erased.
If you are installing two hard drives and plan to use RAID technology, we recommend choosing identical hard drives. This is the only way to achieve the full performance that RAID offers.
⚠️ The NSA320 must be turned off when you are about to add or remove a hard drive or drives.
⚠️ Hard drive initialization and formatting: All data on the hard drive will be erased. If you have files you do not want to lose, back them up before inserting them into the NSA320.
- Ensure the NSA320 is disconnected from Ethernet and has no power connected.
- Place the NSA320 on a flat surface with the POWER button panel facing upwards. Use a flat-head screwdriver to press the latch holding the front panel. Carefully remove the panel.
- Attach the hard drive brackets (A) to the side of the drive. The bracket is precisely sized for standard hard drives. Use the supplied screws to attach the hard drive to the brackets, as shown in the image on the right. Screw the brackets to both sides of the drive. The screws must hold firmly; there should be no play. The drive vibrates during operation, so it must not move within the brackets.
- Slide the hard drives into the rails. The NSA320 can accommodate two hard drives.
- Reattach the front panel. If you need to remove a hard drive from the NSA320, use the standard supplied handle.
Connecting the NSA320
- Connect the supplied Ethernet cable to the LAN port ? located on the rear of the NSA320. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your computer, switch, or router on your home network.
- Plug the supplied power adapter ⚡ into an electrical outlet. Then, connect the other end to the POWER socket on the rear of the NSA320. ⚠️ Use ONLY the supplied power adapter.
- Press the power button ? located on the front of the NSA320. This will turn on the device, and the front panel will light up.
? If the panel does not light up, check the connection to the electrical outlet.
Powering On and Status Indicators:
- The power button ? is solid blue.
- The SYS icon ? is solid green after a successful startup. This takes about 50 seconds.
- The HDD icon ? lights up if the NSA320 detects a hard drive connected in the corresponding bay.
- On the rear of the NSA320, next to the LAN port ?, there is an icon that lights up when connected correctly to the network. It blinks during operation (data transfer).
To turn off the NSA320, press and hold the power button ? until you hear a beep. The device is now off, and you can release the button.
Accessing the NSA320
For full functionality of the NSA320, you need to install the NAS Starter Utility program. Install it as follows:
- Insert the CD ? that came with the NSA320 into your computer's CD drive. The CD will open automatically. Click Setup. Then click the NAS Starter Utility link.
- If the CD does not launch automatically, you need to proceed manually. In Windows, open "This PC" and open the drive where your CD drive is located (e.g., E:). In the file list, you will see the setup.exe file. Run it.
- The installation wizard will start, guiding you through the utility installation. The installation is fully automatic and completes after clicking Finish.
- In Windows, navigate to Start > All Programs > ZyXEL > NAS Starter Utility > ZyXEL NAS Starter Utility. This will launch the NAS Starter Utility program. If your computer has more than one network card, you will need to select the one that has access to the network with the NSA320.
Initializing the NSA320
Perform the following steps only after you have inserted the hard drive(s) into the NSA320.
- The tool will scan your network and find the NSA320. Continue by clicking the NSA320 button.
- Click Run Initialized Wizard.
- Enter the login details. The default factory settings are Username: admin and Password: 1234. Continue by clicking Next. ? The username and password are case-sensitive (PASSWORD is not the same as password). Ensure that Caps Lock is not enabled on your keyboard when entering them.
- You can now select Default Configuration (recommended) and let the software set all items. Experienced users can choose Manual Configuration. Continue by clicking Next.
- You can now start using the NSA320. The utility offers the following further options:
- Clicking Import files or folders with zPilot launches the zPilot tool. Dragging and dropping files onto the zPilot icon will copy the files to the NSA320. If they are multimedia files, they will be automatically sorted into the Music, Photo, and Video folders. Other file types will be copied to the Public folder. When copying folders, you will be able to choose where to copy them.
- Clicking Play Media Files from Home Screen will allow you to play multimedia content from any computer directly in your web browser.
- Enter your username and password and click Login.
Logging into the NSA320
In this chapter, you will learn how to log into the NSA320 directly from a web browser.
? If you do not see the initial login screen, refer to the Troubleshooting chapter at the end of this manual.
- Open your web browser and type the network device name, i.e., NSA320 (or "NSA320").
- Fill in the Username and Password fields. The default username is admin and the password is 1234. Continue by clicking Login.
- The Home screen then offers all functions. From here, you can play your multimedia files.
On the CD ?, you will find a trial version of the Memeo Autobackup application. This software is designed for convenient backup of files from your computer. First, a backup of the files and folders you select will be created. The program then monitors which files change. If a file is modified, it will be automatically backed up to the NSA320. If your computer's hard drive is damaged, the latest versions of your documents will be stored on the NSA320.
Troubleshooting
If the login screen does not appear, try the following steps:
- Ensure the NSA320 is turned on ⚡.
- Check the Ethernet cable connection ?. Look at the LED next to the LAN port to see if it is lit or blinking.
- Ensure you have completed the initialization process and installed NAS Starter Utility.
- When entering the name directly into the browser (NSA320), ensure you have not made any typos. Login is only possible after installing NAS Starter Utility. If the software is not installed correctly, reinstall it.
- Ensure your computer's IP address belongs to the same network as the NSA320's IP address. Both the computer and the NSA320 should be connected to the same router with the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) service enabled. You can find instructions on how to ensure both devices are on the same network in your router's manual. It is not possible to connect to the NSA320 from the internet if it is part of your home network.
- Use the ping command to check if the NSA320 is responding. In Windows, press [Win]+[R], and type
cmd
in the window. Confirm by clicking OK. Now type the command "ping NSA320". You should receive a response. If you do not get a response, type the command "ping NSA320 IP address". If you don't know the IP address, find it using NAS Starter Utility. If the NSA320 does not respond to ping, it means it is not correctly connected to the network. Check the Ethernet cable connection ? and router settings. - Use a web browser such as Internet Explorer 6.0, Mozilla Firefox 2.00, or newer versions of these browsers for access. You must have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
