Using the Lens

Parts of the Lens: Names and Functions

Refer to the diagram (not included here, but described below):

  • q Lens hood: Blocks stray light to prevent flare or ghosting and protects the lens.
  • w Attachment point for 46 mm filters: For attaching lens caps, lens hoods, and 46 mm filters. Not for other accessories.
  • e Accessory attachment point: For SY-1-62 adapter rings (for SB-R200 flash units) and 62 mm B adapters (for ES-2 film digitizing adapters). Not for other accessories. Attaching interfering accessories may cause malfunction or damage.
  • r Control ring: In autofocus mode, adjusts settings like focus or aperture assigned via the camera. In manual focus mode, used for focusing.
  • t Reproduction ratio indicator: Displays reproduction ratio and focus distance for close-up photography. Values are approximate.
  • y Lens mounting mark: Used to align the lens with the camera body during mounting.
  • u Rubber lens-mount gasket: Seals the lens mount.
  • i CPU contacts: Transfer data between the lens and camera.
  • o Focus-mode switch: Selects autofocus (A) or manual focus (M). Manual focus requires adjustment via camera controls if selected.
  • !0 Focus limit switch: Limits autofocus range to FULL (0.16 m to infinity) or 0.3 m – 0.16 m for faster focusing on close subjects.
  • !1 Lens cap (front cap): Protects the front lens element.
  • !2 Lens cap (rear cap): Protects the rear lens element and contacts.

Attaching and Removing the Lens

Attaching: Turn the camera off, remove body cap and rear lens cap. Align mounting marks on lens and camera, then rotate lens counterclockwise until it clicks. Turn the camera on; the lens will extend automatically.

Extending the Lens: Do not place the camera lens-down. Do not turn the camera on if it rests on the lens. Do not hold or forcibly extend/retract the lens. If the lens fails to extend or freezes, press the shutter-release button.

Removing: Turn the camera off (lens retracts automatically). Press and hold the lens release button while turning the lens clockwise.

Removing While Extended: To avoid damage, turn the camera off, reattach the lens, turn the camera on, then off again before removing.

Attaching and Removing the Lens Hood

The lens hood screws onto the 46 mm filter attachment point. Ensure the lens is retracted before attaching/removing. Avoid touching the lens glass.

Shooting Close-Ups

This lens excels at close-ups. For best results:

  • Use a tripod and remote release to minimize camera shake, which can cause blur in close-ups.
  • Short focus distances reduce depth of field. Stop down the aperture and increase exposure times to increase depth of field.
  • Be careful not to bump your subject with the lens hood.

Adjusting Aperture

The effective aperture range varies with focus distance. At infinity, it's f/2.8–f/22. At 0.16 m, it's f/5.6–f/32. The camera displays an "effective aperture" that accounts for brightness changes as focus distance decreases.

Diagram Description: A graph shows aperture ranges (f/2.8 to f/22 or f/32) against focus distances (0.16m to 0.79m and beyond to infinity), illustrating how the aperture range shifts with focus distance.

Choosing a Reproduction Ratio

To shoot at a specific reproduction ratio (e.g., 1:1 or 1:2):

  1. Slide the focus-mode switch to M.
  2. Rotate the control ring until the desired ratio is shown on the reproduction ratio indicator.
  3. Position the camera to bring the subject into focus by moving it forward or back.

Reproduction Ratio: The ratio of the subject's apparent size on the image sensor to its actual size (e.g., 1:2 means the subject appears half its actual size).

Taking Photographs

  • Touching the extended lens during autofocus may interrupt focus; pressing the shutter-release button restores normal function.
  • Focus position may change after turning the camera off and on. If waiting for a subject, avoid turning the camera off until the shot is taken.

Cameras with AF-Assist Illuminators

The lens or hood may block the camera's AF-assist illuminator. For information on compatibility, visit: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/

Using the Lens on Cameras with a Built-in Flash

The lens or hood can cause shadows with built-in flash. Remove the hood before shooting. Shadows may still appear depending on subject distance and focal length. For details on avoiding shadows, visit: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/

For Your Safety

Lens Care

Removing dust is usually sufficient for cleaning glass surfaces.

  • Cleaning the fluorine-coated front lens element: Use a soft, clean cotton cloth or lens tissue. Clean from the center outwards in a circular motion. For stubborn stains, use a cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, ethanol, or lens cleaner. Drop-shaped marks on fluorine-coated surfaces (water/oil repellent) can be removed with a dry cloth.
  • Cleaning the rear lens element: Use a soft, clean cloth or lens tissue lightly dampened with ethanol or lens cleaner. Clean gently from the center outwards in a circular motion, ensuring no smears are left.
  • Never use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
  • Neutral Color (NC) filters can protect the front lens element.
  • Store in a cool, dry location, away from mothballs or direct sunlight, to prevent mold and rust if storing for extended periods.

Accessories

Supplied Accessories

  • LC-46B Lens Cap (front cap)
  • LF-N1 Lens Cap (rear cap)

Do not use for cleaning monitors or lens elements. Ensure the lens is secure during transport.
