- !3 Lens hood: Blocks stray light to prevent flare/ghosting and protects the lens.
- !4 Lens hood lock mark: Used when attaching the lens hood.
- !5 Lens hood alignment mark: Used for aligning the lens hood.
- !6 Lens hood lock release button: Use when removing the lens hood.
- !7 Lens cap (front cap): Protects the front lens element.

Attaching and Removal
Attaching the Lens:
- Turn the camera off, remove the body cap, and detach the rear lens cap.
- Align the mounting mark on the lens with the mounting mark on the camera body.
- Rotate the lens counterclockwise until it clicks into place.
Removing the Lens:
- Turn the camera off.
- Press and hold the lens release button while turning the lens clockwise.
Note: Do not remove the lens while the camera is on. If the lens rattles after removal, reattach, power cycle the camera, and remove again correctly.
The Lens Info Panel
The panel lights up when the lens is attached and the camera is on. Pressing the display button cycles through display options: Focus distance, Depth of field (in A/M modes), Aperture (effective aperture in A/M modes), and Reproduction ratio. The panel turns off automatically after a period of inactivity or when the camera standby timer expires. Press the display button to reactivate.
Panel Options: Press and hold the display button to access settings. Use the control ring to choose units (meters/feet) or adjust brightness (6 levels). Rotating the control ring in the '-' direction until the icon changes to turns the panel off. Press the display button to save changes and toggle the display. Panel options clear after 5 seconds of inactivity.
Attaching and Removing the Lens Hood
Attaching the Lens Hood:
- Align the lens hood mounting mark with the lens hood alignment mark.
- Rotate the lens hood until its mounting mark aligns with the lens hood lock mark.
- Grip the lens hood near its base for easier attachment/removal. The hood can be reversed for storage.
Removing the Lens Hood:
- Press and hold the lens hood lock release button.
- Rotate the lens hood in the indicated direction and remove it.
Shooting Close-Ups
This lens is suitable for close-ups, allowing subjects to fill more of the frame. For close-up shooting:
- Use a tripod and a remote cord or wireless remote controller to prevent blur from camera shake.
- Short focus distances reduce depth of field. Stop down the aperture and increase exposure times to increase depth of field.
- Be careful not to strike your subject with the lens hood.
Adjusting Aperture
The aperture range varies with focus distance. At infinity, it's f/2.8 to f/32. At 0.29m, it's f/4.5 to f/51. The lens displays an 'effective aperture' that accounts for brightness variations due to focus distance. For example, at infinity, f/2.8 is available; at 0.29m, the effective aperture becomes f/4.5.
Choosing a Reproduction Ratio
To shoot at a specific reproduction ratio (e.g., 1:1 or 1:2):
- Set the focus-mode switch to M.
- Press the display button to show the reproduction ratio on the lens info panel.
- Rotate the focus ring until the desired ratio is displayed (e.g., '2' for 1:2). Do not rotate the focus ring after selection.
- Position the camera so the subject is in focus, moving the camera forward or backward as needed.
The reproduction ratio is the ratio of the apparent size of an object on the image sensor to its true size (e.g., 1:1 is life-size, 1:2 is half life-size).
Vibration Reduction (VR)
The lens supports VR, adjustable via the camera. With [Normal] VR, shutter speeds can be up to 4.5 stops slower. VR effectiveness diminishes at closer focus distances. For tripod/monopod use, select [Off] for VR.
Taking Photographs
Focus position may change if the camera is turned off and on after focusing. If you have pre-focused on a location, do not turn the camera off until the picture is taken.
Cameras with AF-Assist Illuminators
The lens or hood may block the AF-assist illuminator. For information on compatibility, visit: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/
Using the Lens on Cameras with a Built-in Flash
Shadows may appear in photos if the built-in flash light is blocked by the lens or hood. Remove the hood before shooting. Shadows may still appear depending on subject distance and focal length. For information on focal lengths and subject distances where shadows do not appear, visit: https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/
Lens Care
General Care:
- Remove dust normally.
- For the fluorine-coated front lens element: Remove fingerprints/oily stains with a soft, clean cotton cloth or lens tissue, cleaning from the center outwards. For stubborn stains, use a soft cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, ethanol, or lens cleaner. Drop-shaped marks on fluorine-coated surfaces are normal and can be removed with a dry cloth.
- For the rear lens element (not fluorine-coated): Remove fingerprints/oily stains with a soft, clean cloth or lens tissue lightly dampened with ethanol or lens cleaner, cleaning from the center outwards. Clean evenly without leaving smears.
- Never use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
- Neutral Color (NC) filters can be used to protect the front lens element.
- Store in a cool, dry location to prevent mold and rust, away from mothballs or direct sunlight.
Precautions for Use:
- Do not pick up or hold the lens or camera using only lens caps or the lens hood.
- Keep CPU contacts clean.
- If the rubber lens-mount gasket is damaged, cease use and take the lens to an authorized service center.
- Replace lens caps when the lens is not in use.
- Avoid humid locations or exposure to moisture, as rusting can cause irreparable damage.
- Do not leave the lens near open flames or in extremely hot locations, as extreme heat can damage or warp the exterior.
- To prevent condensation when moving between temperature extremes, place the lens in a sealed bag or case until it adjusts to the new temperature.
- Use the provided case to protect the lens from scratches during transport.
