How Solar Motion Security Lights Work

A solar motion light has a solar panel that converts sunlight into electricity. During the day, the electricity converted by the solar panel is stored in the rechargeable batteries. At night, the solar motion light is powered by the batteries using the electricity stored during the day. The operating time depends on geographical location, daily weather conditions, and season.

Choosing the Right Location

Select a location with full, direct sunlight. Do not install in shady areas as these areas will not allow the battery to be fully charged and will reduce nighttime working hours. Be sure that the selected location is not close to other nighttime light sources such as street lights or porch lights. These light sources may keep the solar motion light from turning on automatically.

Assembly and Installation Instructions

Install the light on a wall at 7.9 feet above the ground for optimal performance.

Step 1

Determine an appropriate installation distance between the solar panel and light fixture to locate the installation positions.

Step 2

Use screws included to install the solar panel (1) to the position located. It is vital to mount the solar panel in a location with both great exposure directly under the noontime sun and good southern exposure to the sun for 6 to 8 hours for maximum efficiency.

[Diagram Description: FIG.1 shows the solar panel (1) with mounting points and angle adjustment markings (0°, 90°, 360°).]

Step 3

Fix two screws included to the wall and hang up the light fixture (2). Remove the compartment cover, then use one screw to fix the light fixture on the wall.

[Diagram Description: FIG.2 shows the light fixture (2) with a removable compartment cover, indicating screw placement for wall mounting.]

Step 4

Connect the light fixture (2) to the solar panel (1).

[Diagram Description: FIG.3 illustrates the electrical connection between the light fixture (2) and the solar panel (1) via a cable.]

Setting Up or Making Adjustments to the Motion Sensor

  1. The lights will turn off in daytime and turn on at night, which is controlled by a CDS switch automatically.
  2. Observe two controls after removing the compartment cover. The RANGE (sensor sensitivity) control is located above. The ON-TIME (duration) switch is located below.
  3. Set the sensitivity of the sensor. It has a 30 second warm up period before it will detect motion. Turn the dial clockwise to increase the sensitivity (range). Turn the dial counter-clockwise to decrease the sensitivity (range).
  4. Slide the ON-TIME switch to set how long the light will stay on after motion is detected. The range is controlled by dial and varies with surrounding temperature. The setting choices are 1 and 5 minutes. Note: When making this adjustment in TEST mode, the light will remain ON for 5 seconds and then turn OFF both in bright or dark environments.

[Diagram Description: FIG.4 shows a close-up view of the motion sensor control panel, featuring a 'RANGE' dial for sensitivity adjustment (MIN to MAX) and an 'ON-TIME' switch with settings for OFF, TEST, 1 MIN, and 5 MIN.]

Range Setting

Walk in the area to be tested. When your motion is detected, the lights will turn on. The detected area will reach 50 feet when the RANGE dial has been turned to MAX.

[Diagram Description: FIG.5 is a graph illustrating the motion sensor's detection range, showing distance in feet (0 to 50 ft) and angle. FIG.6 depicts the 180-degree detection field of the motion sensor.]

Operation

Place the sensor switch in the 1 or 5 minute mode for normal operation. Actual normal operating time will vary depending upon how frequently the light is turned on by the motion sensor and amount of sunlight collected. To disable the light, place the switch in the OFF position.

Charging the Battery

For optimum performance, it is best to install the solar light in full sunlight and charge for 10-12 hours. Allow the light to run at least 8-12 entire charging and discharging cycles to reach battery's maximum capacity.

Replacing the Battery

Step 1

Remove the battery compartment cover (A) and replace the old batteries (B) with three pieces of new AA NI-MH/CD rechargeable batteries. Replace the battery compartment cover.

[Diagram Description: FIG.7 shows the battery compartment, indicating the cover (A) and the location for inserting batteries (B).]

CAUTION: CONTAINS NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERY. BATTERY MUST BE RECYCLED OR DISPOSED OF PROPERLY.

Troubleshooting and Tips

If your solar motion light does not turn on at night or its nightly run time is shorter, it may be caused by one of the following conditions:

  1. Batteries are not fully charged. Make sure the solar light is located in an area where it can receive the maximum amount of full, direct sunlight everyday. If the solar motion light does not receive enough sunlight during a day (e.g. due to cloudy or overcast weather conditions), it will be recharged on the next sunny day and resume normal operation. Keeping the solar panel clean is equally important to ensure the maximum charging performance.
  2. The solar motion light is installed close to other light sources, which may keep the solar motion light from turning on at night automatically. To solve the problem, relocate the fixture or eliminate other light sources.
  3. The batteries are reaching the end of their useful life and need to be replaced.

Winter Tips

Keep debris and snow off the solar panel to allow the battery to recharge. If lights have been covered by snow for a long time, allow batteries to recharge in full, direct sunlight for at least 10-12 hours so they can maintain maximum capacity.
