Introduction
The espresso is a unique coffee brewing method where hot water is forced under pressure through finely ground coffee. Coffee brewed this way is much more concentrated and has more body than common drip coffee, and is very popular in Europe. Due to its concentration, espresso is usually served in small cups, in portions of 44 to 59 ml (1.5 to 2 ounces).
Cappuccino
The drink is composed of 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 frothed milk.
Latte
A drink composed of approximately 1/4 espresso and 3/4 steamed milk.
Before using this appliance, please read carefully ALL instructions, precautions, notes, and warnings contained in this instruction manual. When the unit is used, some parts and accessories get hot and should cool down. Proper care and maintenance of your Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker will ensure its longevity and trouble-free operation. Keep these instructions and refer to them frequently for cleaning and care tips.
Your Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker can be used with ground coffee or with 45 mm E.S.E. pre-packaged coffee pods, making it exceptionally practical and versatile for preparing a single cup of espresso, cappuccino, or latte.

Selecting the Correct Cup Size
Ensure you select the cup size according to the following chart:
PREPARATION TYPE | SUGGESTED CUP SIZE | |
---|---|---|
Espresso | Single () | 40 ml |
Double () | 80 ml | |
Cappuccino | Single () | 180 ml |
Double () | 300 ml | |
Latte | Single () | 350 ml |
Double () | 450 ml |
NOTE: The total preparation volume may vary depending on the type of milk used.
Selecting the Right Coffee
Type of Coffee
The coffee should have a dark roast and be freshly ground. You may want to try a French or Italian roast ground for espresso. Pre-ground coffee will retain its flavor for only 7 to 8 days, provided it is stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Do not store it in the refrigerator or freezer. It is recommended to grind whole beans just before use. Stored coffee beans in an airtight container will retain their flavor for up to 4 weeks.
Grind Type
This is a vital step in the espresso-making process if you grind your own coffee and requires practice. The coffee should be ground very finely.
- If ground properly, the coffee should look like salt.
- If the grind is too fine, water will not flow through the coffee, even under pressure. These grinds will look like talc and feel like flour when rubbed between fingers.
- If ground too coarse, water will penetrate the coffee too quickly, preventing complete flavor extraction.
Ensure you use a quality grinder for uniform consistency. Oval-shaped grinders are not recommended as they do not grind uniformly.
Cleaning Your Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker
Cleaning the Milk Tank and Frothing Tube
Although you can store leftover milk in the milk tank in the refrigerator, it is important to clean the tank and frothing tube regularly to prevent clogging and residue buildup. To clean the milk tank, follow the instructions below:
- Remove the milk tank from the unit.
- Remove the tank lid.
- Pour out any leftover milk, rinse, and thoroughly wash the milk tank and its lid with warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry well. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as they may scratch the finish. You can also place the milk tank in the dishwasher (top rack). Do not place the milk tank lid in the dishwasher.
- Place a large empty cup under the frothing tube.
- Press and hold the “Clean” button (“Limp.”) for 3 seconds. The unit will begin to dispense steam through the frothing tube; let it run for approximately 40 seconds, and when finished, press the “Clean” button (“Limp.”) once to stop the process.
- Discard any remaining water in the milk tank and place it back in the unit.
Cleaning the Brew Head, Portafilter, and Filter
- Turn the power switch on the side of the unit to the off position (“O”) and unplug the power cord from the outlet.
- Some metal parts may still be hot. Do not touch them with your hands until they have cooled down.
- Remove the portafilter and discard the coffee grounds or used pod. Wash both the portafilter and the filter with warm, soapy water and rinse them thoroughly. Do not wash the portafilter or filters in the dishwasher.
- Clean the bottom of the unit's brew head with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any coffee grounds residue that may have accumulated.
- Replace the portafilter (without the filter) in the unit's brew head.
- Place a large empty cup under the portafilter.
- Press the Espresso button (“ ”) once and let the unit brew with water only until it stops automatically.
Cleaning the Water Tank
Discard the remaining water by removing the tank and inverting it over the sink. It is recommended to empty the water tank after each use. Wash the water tank with soapy water, rinse, and dry it well. Do not wash the water tank in the dishwasher.
Cleaning the Unit
- Wipe the housing with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads, as they may scratch the surface.
- Do not store the portafilter in the brew head. This could negatively affect the seal between the brew head and the portafilter when brewing espresso.
Descaling
Caution:
Do not immerse the appliance in water.
This appliance has no user-serviceable parts. Any service beyond what is described in the cleaning section should only be performed by an authorized service representative. Consult the warranty, available online.
Mineral Deposit Removal
Mineral deposits that accumulate in the unit will affect the appliance's performance. Mineral deposits should be removed when you begin to notice an increase in the time required to brew espresso or when too much steam is produced. You may also observe a buildup of white residue on the brew head surface.
The frequency of cleaning will depend on the hardness of the water used. The table below provides suggested cleaning intervals.
Type of Water | Cleaning Frequency |
---|---|
Soft water (filtered water) | Every 80 brewing cycles |
Hard water (tap water) | Every 40 brewing cycles |
To Remove Mineral Deposits from the Water Tank:
- Fill the tank with undiluted white household vinegar.
- Let the vinegar solution sit in the water tank overnight.
- Discard the vinegar by removing the tank and inverting it over the sink.
- Rinse the tank thoroughly with tap water; fill it halfway with water and pour it into the sink; repeat this operation twice.
To Remove Mineral Deposits from Internal Parts:
- First, ensure you have removed mineral deposits from the water tank by following the steps described previously in the corresponding section.
- Ensure the power switch is in the “O” position and the power cord is unplugged from the outlet. Fill the tank with vinegar above the minimum level mark.
- Insert the portafilter (with the filter, but without coffee) and place the carafe or a common cup on the drip tray, under the portafilter.
- Plug the power cord into the outlet.
- Turn the unit's power switch on (“I”); once the 3 control panel lights are steady blue, press the Espresso/Al Gusto button twice. The vinegar will begin to flow through the unit and will stop automatically.
- Place a carafe or a large cup (with a minimum capacity of 325 ml/11 ounces) under the tube. Fill the milk tank with water and place it back in the unit. Turn the froth control knob clockwise to the cleaning position (“Limp.”) and then press the Latte/Clean button (“Limp.”) for 3 seconds to activate the cleaning function. Allow the unit to dispense water through the tube for approximately 30 seconds, then press the Latte/Clean button once to stop the process.
- Repeat steps 1 through 6 as necessary, using only tap water to rinse any remaining vinegar from the machine.
Operating Instructions
Filling the Water Tank
- Fill the tank with water; you can use a pitcher to fill it or remove the unit and place it under the faucet to fill. If you remove the unit to fill it with water, be sure to place it back fully into its position. Fill the reservoir with the desired amount of water, ensuring not to exceed the “MAX” level. Never use warm or hot water to fill the water tank.
