Introduction

The Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker is an innovative appliance designed to prepare delicious espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes quickly, conveniently, and automatically with the touch of a button.

Espresso

A unique coffee brewing method where hot water is forced through finely ground coffee. It is a richer, more full-bodied brew, typically served in 44 to 59 mL portions in demitasse cups.

Cappuccino

A drink made with approximately ¼ espresso, ½ steamed milk, and ½ frothed milk.

Latte

A drink made with approximately ¼ espresso and ¾ steamed milk.

It is important to read all instructions, cautions, notes, and warnings in this manual carefully before using the appliance. Proper care and maintenance will ensure the long life and trouble-free operation of the Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker. This appliance can be used with ground coffee, making it versatile for preparing single shots of espresso, cappuccino, and latte.

  1. Before removing any parts and accessories, ensure the three lights are on, press the on/off switch to the off position “O”, and unplug the appliance.
  2. Do not remove the porta-filter at any time during the brewing process.
  3. Use caution when removing the porta-filter. Metal parts may still be very hot. Hot water may also be on top of the filter. Hold it by its handle and use the filter retention clip to dispose of brewed coffee grounds.

Turn the Froth Control Knob clockwise to the clean position (?). Press the latte/clean button for 3 seconds and release to activate the clean function. Selecting the Right Cup

Choose the correct cup size based on the beverage type:

Beverage TypeRatios by Beverage TypeVolume
EspressoSingle (☕)40 ml
Double (☕☕)80 ml
CappuccinoSingle (?☕)180 ml
Double (??☕☕)300 ml
LatteSingle (?)350 ml
Double (??)450 ml

Selecting the Right Coffee

The Coffee

Coffee should be freshly ground and dark roasted, such as French or Italian roast. Pre-ground coffee retains flavor for 7-8 days in an airtight container in a cool, dark area. Whole beans are recommended to be ground just before use, retaining flavor for up to 4 weeks.

The Grind

The grind is vital for espresso making. It should be fine, like salt. If too fine (like powder), water won't flow under pressure. If too coarse, water flows too fast, preventing full-flavored extraction. Use a quality grinder for uniform consistency.

Operating Instructions

Filling the Water Reservoir

  1. Fill the reservoir with water, either by using a jar or by removing it and filling under the tap. Ensure it is placed back tightly and filled below the "MAX" line. Never use warm or hot water.
  2. Close the water reservoir lid and place it back in the unit tightly.

Filling the Milk Reservoir

For cappuccino or latte, remove the milk reservoir, open the lid, and pour cold milk up to the “Max” level. Place the milk reservoir back tightly. The Cappuccino and Latte buttons will illuminate or pulse.

Note: Any type of milk (whole, low-fat, organic, soy) can be used.

Choosing the Filter

Select the appropriate filter:

  1. For a Single Shot: Use the filter for a single shot of espresso if using ground coffee.
  2. For a Double Shot or Two Single Shots: Use the filter for a double shot.

Inserting the Filter

  1. To insert the selected filter in the porta-filter, align the notch on the filter with the groove inside the porta-filter.
  2. Turn the filter to the left or right to lock it securely in place within the porta-filter.

Note: To remove and clean the filter, turn it to the left or right to align the filter notch with the groove inside the porta-filter.

Warning: Ensure the filter has cooled before attempting to remove it.

Filling with Coffee

  1. Fill the filter with fresh, fine ground espresso coffee (do not overfill).
  2. Tamp and compress firmly and evenly. Coffee should be 3mm below the top of the filter after tamping.
  3. Clean any excess coffee from the rim to ensure proper fit under the brew head and avoid leaks.

Placing the Porta-Filter

  1. Position the porta-filter underneath the brew head, moving the retainer clip back first.
  2. Position the handle so it lines up with the open lock icon (?) on the unit and fits into the groove.
  3. Slowly turn it to the right until the retention clip is aligned with the closed lock symbol (?) on the unit.

Placing the Cup(s)

  1. Pull out the height adjustment tray for a small “demitasse” cup for espresso.
  2. Keep the height adjustment tray inside its compartment for a larger cup for cappuccino.
  3. Keep the height adjustment tray inside its compartment for a larger cup for latte.

Caution: When brewing cappuccino or latte, adjust the frothing tube lever to point inside the cup.

Turning the Unit On

  1. Ensure the unit is plugged in.
  2. Turn the unit on "I".

The three control panel lights will blink during heating until the water reaches the perfect temperature. Once solid, the unit is ready.

Note: The Espresso function typically becomes ready before Cappuccino and Latte functions.
