Instruction Manual
Read and save all instructions before using this appliance.
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:
This unit is for household use only.
In order to avoid possible burns to body parts and/or other injury from hot steam and water or damages to the unit, never remove the water reservoir or the porta-filter while your Oster® espresso, cappuccino and latte maker is brewing coffee or frothing. Wait until the brew cycle is complete before removing any of these parts.
Do not use sugar roasted* ground coffee or sugar roasted coffee beans as these will clog the filter and damage the appliance. If sugar roasted coffee is accidentally used, stop using the unit and contact Oster Consumer Service for maintenance.
Oster recommends descaling the machine periodically to keep it in good working condition. Contact Oster Consumer Service Centers as listed on separate insert to learn about this process.

The Oster BVSTEM6601 Series appliance features various components for brewing and frothing. Refer to the following list for identification:
The control panel is divided into two parts: the left side indicates automatic brewing functions, and the right side indicates manual functions.
Note: Please read the rest of the instructions before operating the Oster® espresso, cappuccino & latte maker.
The Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker is an innovative appliance designed to prepare delicious espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes quickly, conveniently, and automatically with the touch of a button.
A unique coffee brewing method where hot water is forced through finely ground coffee. It is a richer, more full-bodied brew, typically served in 44 to 59 mL portions in demitasse cups.
A drink made with approximately ¼ espresso, ½ steamed milk, and ½ frothed milk.
A drink made with approximately ¼ espresso and ¾ steamed milk.
It is important to read all instructions, cautions, notes, and warnings in this manual carefully before using the appliance. Proper care and maintenance will ensure the long life and trouble-free operation of the Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker. This appliance can be used with ground coffee, making it versatile for preparing single shots of espresso, cappuccino, and latte.
Please follow these important safety instructions while using the unit:
Note: For proper unit function, clean it after every use.
Familiarize yourself with the appliance parts by referring to the “Description of the Appliance” section.
To prime the unit, run the steam cycle for 90 seconds:
Your unit is now primed and ready for use.
Choose the correct cup size based on the beverage type:
Beverage Type | Ratios by Beverage Type | Volume |
---|---|---|
Espresso | Single (☕) | 40 ml |
Double (☕☕) | 80 ml | |
Cappuccino | Single (?☕) | 180 ml |
Double (??☕☕) | 300 ml | |
Latte | Single (?) | 350 ml |
Double (??) | 450 ml |
Coffee should be freshly ground and dark roasted, such as French or Italian roast. Pre-ground coffee retains flavor for 7-8 days in an airtight container in a cool, dark area. Whole beans are recommended to be ground just before use, retaining flavor for up to 4 weeks.
The grind is vital for espresso making. It should be fine, like salt. If too fine (like powder), water won't flow under pressure. If too coarse, water flows too fast, preventing full-flavored extraction. Use a quality grinder for uniform consistency.
For cappuccino or latte, remove the milk reservoir, open the lid, and pour cold milk up to the “Max” level. Place the milk reservoir back tightly. The Cappuccino and Latte buttons will illuminate or pulse.
Note: Any type of milk (whole, low-fat, organic, soy) can be used.
Select the appropriate filter:
Note: To remove and clean the filter, turn it to the left or right to align the filter notch with the groove inside the porta-filter.
Warning: Ensure the filter has cooled before attempting to remove it.
Caution: When brewing cappuccino or latte, adjust the frothing tube lever to point inside the cup.
The three control panel lights will blink during heating until the water reaches the perfect temperature. Once solid, the unit is ready.
Note: The Espresso function typically becomes ready before Cappuccino and Latte functions.
Note: If left on for 15 minutes without use, the unit will enter sleep mode. Press any button to reactivate.
The unit will start brewing espresso according to your selection. It will turn off automatically, and lights will become solid, indicating completion. Your espresso is ready.
Note: To brew less coffee than the preset serving, press the function button to stop the brewing process when the desired amount is reached.
Adjust the quantity of frothed milk by turning the Froth Control Knob: right for more froth, left for less froth. This can be adjusted during the brewing cycle.
Note: For a small cup, use the single shot filter. For a large cup, use the double shot filter.
Adjust the quantity of frothed milk by turning the Froth Control Knob: right for more froth, left for less froth.
Note: For a small cup, use the single shot filter. For a large cup, use the double shot filter.
The Oster® Automatic Espresso, Cappuccino, and Latte Maker also allows preparing froth milk only. Press and hold the Cappuccino Button (?☕) for 3 seconds to add more froth to your beverage or prepare froth milk for other beverages (e.g., macchiato, hot chocolate, chai latte). When done, press the Cappuccino Button (?☕) once again to stop.
After preparing your beverage with milk, you can store the unit's milk reservoir directly in the refrigerator (ready for next use) or dispose of leftover milk.
Regular cleaning of the milk reservoir and frothing tube is important to avoid clogging and residue buildup, even if storing milk in the refrigerator.
Discard remaining water by removing the reservoir and turning it upside down over the sink. It is recommended to empty it between uses. Wash with soapy water, rinse well, and wipe dry. Do not wash in the dishwasher.
Caution: Do not immerse appliance in water.
Mineral deposits will affect appliance operation, increasing brewing time or excessive steaming. White deposits may appear on the brew head. Cleaning frequency depends on water hardness:
Type of Water | Cleaning Frequency |
---|---|
Soft Water (Filtered Water) | Every 80 Brew Cycles |
Hard Water (Tap Water) | Every 40 Brew Cycles |
