Litter-Robot 4 User Manual

by Whisker

Welcome to Your Litter-Robot 4!

This manual guides users through the setup process and provides useful tips for acclimating cats to their new automatic, self-cleaning litter box. Whisker aims to continuously improve the lives of pets and their parents by innovating pet technology and refined accessories.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Ensure all cats using the Litter-Robot weigh at least 1.36 kg (3 lbs) for safe automatic mode operation.
  • Always place the unit on a firm, level surface. Avoid soft, uneven, or unstable flooring. If using on carpet, a carpet pad is recommended.
  • Always unplug the unit before maintenance.
  • Never force a cat into the Litter-Robot.
  • Only use clumping litter or small enough litter beads/crystals to pass through the screen. Translucent or white litter may affect the Full Waste Drawer Indicator (DFI) accuracy.
  • Never sit on or place anything on the Litter-Robot.
  • Do not push the unit against a wall or into a corner.
  • Never wet or immerse the cover or base.
  • Children under 8 years old should not interact with the Litter-Robot. Children or individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities should not use, clean, or maintain the unit without supervision and safety instructions.
  • Never use an external power supply other than the one provided.
  • Do not modify the Litter-Robot hardware, as this voids the warranty.

Components and Dimensions

The Litter-Robot 4 consists of a Globe (the rotating sphere), a Base, and a Waste Drawer. Key components include the Control Panel (with light bar), Cat Detector (curtain and weight sensors), Litter Fill Line, Handle, Sieve, Partition, Night Light, and Power Inlet. The Waste Drawer is located at the bottom front, and the Power Inlet is at the rear base.

Installation and Litter

The Litter-Robot 4 comes fully assembled. Place it in the same location as the old litter box if possible. Ensure it's on a firm, level surface, indoors, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Plug it into a power outlet, ensuring it's not pressed against a wall or corner. Place a litter mat in front, not partially under, the unit.

Litter Requirements: Use clumping litter. Fill the globe through the circular opening to the MAX fill line (approx. 3.6 to 4.5 kg or 4 L). Do not overfill. High-quality clay-based clumping litter is recommended. Small litter beads and crystals that pass through the sieve are also compatible. Avoid strictly absorbent, non-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood pellet litters. Translucent or white litter may affect the DFI.

To power on, plug the small end of the power supply into the rear of the base, then plug the AC/DC adapter into a wall outlet. Press the Power button (⏻).

Cat Acclimation

Most cats adapt quickly. To facilitate transition:

  1. Place the Litter-Robot in the old litter box's spot, powered off, with litter. Let cats explore for a day or two. Use catnip or treats to encourage approach.
  2. Add a scoop of old litter for a familiar scent.
  3. Place treats on the step or hinge around the unit.
  4. Once cats use it, power on. Encourage observation of the cleaning cycle. Power off after the cycle. Stop cleaning the old litter box once the Litter-Robot is used.
  5. If cats don't use it, continue using the old litter box with old litter, leaving it uncleaned. Cats prefer clean litter. Consider special acclimation litter.

Once cats regularly use the Litter-Robot, switch to automatic mode and remove the old litter box.

Continuous Maintenance

Empty the waste drawer when the light bar flashes blue. Frequency depends on cat count and size (e.g., twice a week for two medium cats, once a week for one cat). Use custom Litter-Robot waste drawer liners or any 37-49 L trash bag. To install a new bag, open it, wrap the opening around the drawer flange, and push the rest into the bottom. Replace the drawer, ensuring it doesn't touch walls. Press the Reset button (⨂) to reset weight sensors.

Check litter level weekly or when emptying the drawer. Add litter to the MAX fill line. After adding/removing litter, press Reset (⨂) to recalibrate the cat detector.

Always press Reset (⨂) after changing the unit's weight or location (emptying drawer, adding/removing litter, cleaning, moving) to ensure proper cat detection and cycle operation.

Cleaning Cycles

The Litter-Robot automatically performs a cleaning cycle after a cat exits, separating clumps from clean litter into the waste drawer. A cycle takes 2 minutes. Pressing any button during a cycle pauses it. Press Cycle (↻) to resume, or Reset (⨂) or Empty (⌽) to interrupt and return to the home position.

Operation:

  1. When a cat enters, cat detectors activate, and the blue light bar turns red.
  2. After the cat exits, a countdown begins. Once the cycle delay (see below) expires, the red light bar turns into a round yellow light bar, indicating counter-clockwise rotation for cleaning.
  3. During rotation, clean litter sifts through the screen, and clumps are separated and deposited into the waste drawer.
  4. The flexible liner ensures stuck clumps are removed.
  5. The globe stops at the dump position, then rotates clockwise back to the home position, leveling the clean litter.
  6. The sequential round yellow light bar turns blue, indicating readiness for next use.

If a cat re-enters during the countdown, the cycle will not start. It will restart once the cat exits.

Empty Cycle:

This cycle empties all litter into the waste drawer for disposal or before cleaning the globe. Press Empty (⌽) when the globe is in the home position with a blue light bar. During an empty cycle, pressing Cycle (↻), Reset (⨂), Empty (⌽), or Connect (?) pauses it. Press Cycle (↻) to resume, or Reset (⨂) to interrupt and return to home position.

Empty Cycle Operation:

  1. Pressing Empty (⌽) makes the globe rotate clockwise, with a sequential circular yellow light bar indicating rotation.
  2. Litter falls into the waste drawer.
  3. Once empty, the globe stops with a solid yellow light, awaiting user action. (You may need to push residual litter towards the hole.)
  4. Press Cycle (↻) or Reset (⨂) to return the globe to the home position.

IMPORTANT: Supervise and prevent cats from entering during an empty cycle.

Control Panel - Button Functions

  • Power Button (⏻): Turns the unit ON/OFF. When powered on, the light bar flashes white.
  • Cycle Button (↻) + 8-Hour Sleep Mode: Press to start a cleaning cycle. Press again to pause/resume. A 3-second press activates 8-hour sleep mode (light bar turns purple). To exit, press and hold Cycle (↻) for 3 seconds (light bar turns blue).
  • Reset Button (⨂) + Automatic Night Light: Press to reset cat detectors when the globe is in home position with a blue light bar. Pressing during a cycle pauses it; pressing again interrupts it and returns to home. If the red light bar is active, it cancels the cycle delay and returns to Ready mode. A 3-second press toggles automatic night light configuration.
  • Empty Button (⌽) + Cycle Delay Configuration: Press to start an empty cycle when the globe is in home position with a blue light bar. Pressing during a cleaning or empty cycle pauses it; pressing again interrupts it and returns to home. A 3-second press toggles cycle delay setting.
  • Connect Button (?): Toggles WiFi ON/OFF. White light indicates WiFi OFF. Flashing blue indicates WiFi ON. Solid blue indicates WiFi connected. A 3-second press initiates onboarding mode (flashing yellow light). Press and release to exit onboarding.

Sensors and Functions

Cat Detectors:

  • Curtain Sensor: Located at the opening, detects cat entry/exit when in home position. If activated during a cycle, the globe stops. Resumes after 15 seconds of inactivity. Clean the bezel and curtain sensor holes if issues occur.
  • Weight Sensor (Balance): Located in the base, detects and weighs the cat when in home position. If extra weight is detected during a cycle, the globe stops. Resumes after 15 seconds of weight loss.
