Setting Up Your Litter-Robot

Your Litter-Robot comes fully assembled and ready to use. Follow these steps to get started.

Placement

  1. Place the Litter-Robot as close as possible to the old litter box (at least for a transition period).
  2. Ensure the unit is on a firm, level surface. Avoid soft, uneven, or unstable floors that may affect its ability to detect your cat.
  3. Store the unit indoors in a dry, cool place. Reduce exposure to high temperatures and humidity. Keep it away from direct sunlight as much as possible.
  4. Place the unit near an electrical outlet. Ensure the unit is not pushed against a wall or into a corner (must not touch a wall).
  5. Place litter mats or rugs in front of the unit. Do not place mats partially under the unit. If placing the unit on a rug is necessary, it is strongly recommended to use the Litter-Robot Litter Mat accessory, available at Litter-Robot.com.

Litter

DO NOT use purely absorbent, non-clumping, loosely clumping, paper-based, or wood-based pellet litter.

Fill the globe with clumping litter through the round opening until it reaches the MAX fill line when spread evenly – approximately 3.6-4.5 kg (8-10 lbs) or 4 L. Be careful not to overfill the globe.

The Litter-Robot's litter sifting system requires clumping litter to function correctly. Whisker recommends using a clay-based, high-quality clumping litter. Litter pearls and crystals small enough to pass through the screen also work (periodic replacement of this type of litter is required). Transparent or white litter (most common with crystal litter) can affect the accuracy of the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI).

If you use a litter type not listed here, please contact Customer Service to ensure compatibility.

Tip: When filling the Litter-Robot for the first time, it's best to continue using the brand you used before – as long as it's a clumping type. Your cat needs to get used to the new litter box, and starting with a new type of litter at the same time can stress them. However, if you are currently using a non-clumping litter type, you must switch to a clumping type.

Startup and Initial Cleaning Cycle

Connect the small end of the power supply to the power input at the back of the base. Then plug the AC/DC adapter into a wall outlet.

Locate the power button and press it. The Litter-Robot will perform an initial cleaning cycle, which lasts 2 minutes. Learn more about the cleaning cycle on page 16.

Note: The weight-based cat sensor is deactivated during the initial cleaning cycle at startup to ensure the weight sensors reset correctly when the globe reaches the home position.

Congratulations! Your Litter-Robot is now ready to use, but Whisker recommends turning off the unit until your cat has acclimated to the Litter-Robot and begins using it.

How to Introduce Your Cat to the Litter-Robot

Your cat will likely quickly acclimate to the Litter-Robot. Here are some ways to ease the transition:

  1. Place the Litter-Robot in the same location as the current litter box, set it up (ensure litter is filled in the globe), and make sure it is turned off. Give your cats a day or two to explore the Litter-Robot. If your cat shows no interest, entice them to approach the Litter-Robot with some catnip or a favorite treat.
  2. Pour a scoop of litter from the old litter box into the Litter-Robot to give it a familiar scent.
  3. Place treats on the step or around the Litter-Robot so your cat associates the unit with rewards.
  4. Once you observe your cats using the Litter-Robot, turn on the unit so it can run a cycle. Have your cat present so they can see the movement and get used to the sound of the Litter-Robot while you provide reassurance. Turn off the unit again once the cycle is complete (Litter-Robot must be in the home position). Whisker recommends no longer cleaning the old litter box once your cat has used the Litter-Robot.
  5. If your cat has not started using the Litter-Robot within a few days, continue using the old litter in the old litter box and wait as long as possible to clean it. Cats prefer a clean litter box, and a dirty litter box can convince them to use the clean Litter-Robot. Also consider replacing the litter in the Litter-Robot with a litter specifically formulated for litter box training.

Once your cats consistently use the Litter-Robot, you can turn on the unit and leave it in automatic mode – and remove the old litter box.

Congratulations, you have now introduced your cat to the Litter-Robot. Enjoy being free from scooping litter!

Ongoing Maintenance

Empty the waste drawer when indicated by the light bar blinking blue on the control panel. How often you need to empty the waste drawer depends on how many cats you have and their size. With two average-sized cats, twice a week is normal. With a single cat, once a week is usually sufficient.

Pull out the waste drawer, gather the edges of the waste bag, and dispose of it. You can use Litter-Robot custom waste bags or any other 37-49 L waste bag.

Insert a new waste bag by opening the bag and folding the opening around the flange of the waste drawer. Push the rest of the bag into the bottom of the waste drawer. Push the drawer back in, being careful not to push the unit against a wall or into a corner (it must not touch a wall to ensure accurate weight measurements). Then press the Reset button to reset the weight sensors.

Add Litter as Needed

Check the litter level once a week, or every time you empty the waste drawer. Only add the amount of litter needed to reach the MAX fill line inside the globe, and be careful not to overfill to avoid litter spills. After adding or removing litter, you must press the Reset button to reset the weight sensors.

Press the Reset Button

When you change the unit's weight or placement (including emptying the waste drawer, adding or removing litter, or cleaning or moving the unit), you must press the Reset button to ensure the weight sensors detect your cat and perform the cycle correctly.

See "Use and Care" on page 29 for more information on the carbon filter, base seal strips, waste bags, and how to clean your Litter-Robot.

Cleaning Cycle

When your cat leaves the globe, the Litter-Robot automatically performs a cleaning cycle. The sifting system separates clumps from clean litter and deposits them into the waste drawer below. It takes 2 minutes to complete the cleaning cycle. You can also press the Cycle button to start a cleaning cycle.

During a cleaning cycle, you can press any button to pause the cycle. Press the Cycle button again to resume the cycle. Press the Reset or Empty button to abort the cycle and return the globe to the home position.

How it Works:

  1. The Litter-Robot is ready for use when the globe is in the home position and the light bar on the control panel is blue.
  2. When a cat enters the globe, the cat sensor(s) are activated. The blue light bar turns red.
  3. When the cat leaves the globe, a countdown to the cleaning cycle begins. When the countdown (see page 24) is complete, the light bar turns yellow, indicating the globe's counter-clockwise rotation during the cleaning cycle.
  4. As the counter-clockwise rotation continues, clean litter passes through the dust-reducing screen, while litter clumps are separated from the clean litter. The clean litter collects behind the divider.
  5. During rotation, and as the globe turns upside down, an integrated weight at the bottom of the flexible globe liner causes it to fall away from the globe, removing any stuck clumps.
  6. When the globe rotates towards the dump position, waste clumps fall through the waste opening into the waste drawer below.
  7. The globe then stops in the dump position and begins rotating clockwise back towards the home position. The flexible globe liner falls back into place, and the clean litter falls back to the bottom of the globe.
  8. The globe rotates past the home position to level the litter before finally returning to the home position. The rotating yellow light bar turns blue to indicate the unit is ready for next use.

If your cat enters the globe again during the cycle countdown (red light bar on), the cat sensor(s) detect your cat, and the cycle does not start while your cat is inside the globe (see page 21). When your cat leaves, a new countdown begins.

Emptying Cycle

The emptying cycle allows you to empty all litter from the globe into the waste drawer for disposal. Use this cycle to change all litter or clean the globe (see page 31).

Press the Empty button while the globe is in the home position with the blue light bar on, to start an emptying cycle.

Press the Cycle, Reset, Empty, or Connect button during an emptying cycle to pause the cycle. Press the Cycle button again to resume the cycle. Press the Reset button to abort the cycle and return the globe to the home position.

How it Works:

  1. When you press the Empty button, the globe rotates clockwise, and a rotating yellow light bar indicates the direction of rotation.
  2. As the globe rotates clockwise, litter falls through the waste opening into the waste drawer.
  3. Once the litter is emptied, the globe waits with the yellow light bar on for your action. (You may need to sweep any remaining litter towards the waste opening.)
  4. Press the Cycle or Reset button to return the globe to the home position.

IMPORTANT: Keep an eye on your cat and ensure they do not enter the globe during the emptying cycle, as the unit may not detect your cat when there is no litter inside.

See whiskersupport.com/litter-robot-4 for the latest list of light codes based on new firmware updates.

Litter-Robot Sensors and Functions

Cat Sensor - Curtain Sensor

The Litter-Robot is equipped with curtain sensors that look down across the unit's opening and into the globe. They detect when a cat enters or leaves the globe while it is in the home position. If a curtain sensor is activated during a cycle, the globe stops. After 15 seconds without further activation, the globe resumes rotation. If your unit does not rotate, check for debris (cat hair, dust, etc.) on the edge that may affect the curtain sensors. Resolve this by wiping the edge and curtain sensor holes with a dry towel.

Cat Sensor - Weight

The Litter-Robot is equipped with weight sensors at the bottom of the unit, used to detect and weigh the cat inside the globe when it is in the home position. If additional weight is detected during a cycle, the globe stops. 15 seconds after the additional weight is gone, the globe resumes rotation.

Note: Each time the unit is turned on, or after a cleaning cycle is completed, the weight sensors measure the unit's weight as a new baseline or "zero." The weight can be "reset" at any time by pressing the Reset button. Press the Reset button to reset the weight after performing an action that affects the unit's weight, such as adding litter or emptying the waste drawer.

Press the Reset button firmly and quickly, and check if the blue light bar blinks to confirm that you have reset the weight. Be careful not to lean on the unit while pressing the button, as this will affect the reading. For best weight accuracy, the unit should be on a hard, level surface. If it is on a rug, it will reduce weight accuracy. It is strongly recommended to use the Litter-Robot Litter Mat accessory, available at Litter-Robot.com.

Drawer Full Indicator (DFI)

The Litter-Robot is equipped with a distance sensor that looks down from the top of the unit, used to register the waste level in the waste drawer. During each cleaning cycle, the DFI sensor measures the waste level in the waste drawer when the waste opening passes over the waste drawer.

When the waste drawer is full, the light bar blinks blue.

Check or empty the waste drawer, then press Reset to acknowledge the indicator. Press Reset again to reset the weight. Note that the weight is also automatically reset after each cleaning cycle.

Litter Level

Additionally, the distance sensor is used to measure the litter level in the unit. If the unit is connected via the Whisker app (see page 26), it sends a notification when the litter level is above or below a specified threshold.

Automatic Night Light

Although cats typically have excellent vision, age and illness can reduce their ability to see in low light conditions. The Litter-Robot comes with automatic night light enabled. When the light sensor, located on the control panel, detects low light conditions, the night light turns on automatically.

Hold the Reset button for 3 seconds to enter or exit automatic night light setting mode. The light bar indicates the current setting. Subsequent short presses of the Reset button cycle through the settings shown below. Once you have selected the desired setting, save the setting by holding the Reset button for 3 seconds.

Sleep Mode

In this mode, you can deactivate the cat sensor(s) for a specified period, so the unit does not start a cycle automatically. Sleep mode is practical for units placed in bedrooms or areas where you do not want the unit to start a cycle at certain times of the day.

The unit is programmed with a standard 8-hour sleep period. This sleep period repeats every 24 hours. The start time is determined by the time the mode was set.

Hold the Cycle button for 3 seconds to activate sleep mode. Sleep mode is indicated by the light bar turning purple. The light bar remains purple throughout the sleep period and then returns to blue when the sleep period ends.

During the sleep period, the unit monitors if a cat uses the unit but does not perform a cleaning cycle. When the sleep period ends, and the unit has not been used, the unit returns to ready mode, indicated by a blue light bar, and continues in automatic mode for the rest of the 24-hour period.

If the unit has registered use during the sleep period, a cleaning cycle is performed when the sleep period ends. When the globe returns to the home position, the light bar turns blue, and the unit continues in automatic mode for the rest of the 24-hour period.

Hold the Cycle button for 3 seconds to deactivate sleep mode, indicated by the light bar changing from purple to blue, or by the light bar briefly blinking purple if the unit is not in sleep mode.

Note: The Whisker app (see page 26) offers options for custom sleep mode programming.

Cycle Delay Setting

The cycle delay is the time from when your cat leaves the globe until the unit starts a cleaning cycle. It can be set to 3, 7, 15, 25, or 30 minutes. The standard cycle delay is 7 minutes.

Reduce the cycle delay if it is important to minimize odor and/or the time waste is accessible to other pets, such as dogs. However, a shorter cycle delay may reduce cleaning effectiveness if there hasn't been enough time for clumps to form. Extend the cycle delay if you use a lower quality clumping litter that needs more time to form clumps.

Hold the Empty button for 3 seconds to enter or exit cycle delay setting mode. The light bar indicates the current cycle delay setting. Subsequent short presses of the Empty button cycle through the settings shown below. Once you have selected the desired setting, save the setting by holding the Empty button for 3 seconds.

Control Panel Lock

Control panel lock deactivates button functions to prevent unwanted changes. The Litter-Robot operates normally in automatic mode while the control panel is locked.

Hold the Cycle + Reset buttons for 3 seconds to activate or deactivate the control panel lock. The light bar briefly blinks red to confirm the status change.

While control panel lock is activated, the light bar blinks red when a button is pressed, indicating that the control panel is locked.

While control panel lock is activated, you can turn off the unit by holding the Power button for 3 seconds.

Safety Features

Flap - Full Coverage

The flap acts as a shield and protection for the waste opening when the globe rotates. The globe cannot rotate without the flap installed (see Control Panel - Light Bar - Blinking Yellow Light Bar, page 20).

OmniSense Cat Detection System

The Litter-Robot's cat sensor system is a combination of optical sensors and weight sensors that detect if your cat tries to enter the unit during a cycle. If a cat attempts to enter the unit during a cycle, the globe stops, and the light bar turns red to indicate that the cycle has been interrupted. The cycle does not resume until 15 seconds have passed without your cat being detected.

The Litter-Robot is also equipped with a motion sensor that monitors the waste drawer. If movement is detected in the waste drawer while the globe is in the home position, the unit rotates the globe to a position where the waste opening allows waste to exit the waste drawer.

Anti-Pinch Safety Feature

The Litter-Robot is equipped with anti-pinch sensors on both sides of the waste drawer chute for your cat's safety while using the Litter-Robot. These sensors constantly monitor for potential pinching.

If a potential pinch is detected during a cycle, the globe stops and reverses for 5 seconds. After a 2-second pause, the unit will attempt to resume the cycle.

While the globe reverses, the light bar shows a yellow ping-pong pattern.

Note: Ensure the double pinch guard is free of excess litter.

Overload Detection

If the globe gets stuck or becomes overloaded during rotation, the motor stops and reverses for 5 seconds. After a 2-second pause, the unit will attempt to resume the cycle.

If the globe cannot complete the cycle after three attempts, the globe stops, and the light bar displays an error code with a red light bar with a partial yellow blink.

If the globe can complete a cleaning cycle after a blockage or overload condition, the control panel returns to ready mode (blue light bar). The unit continues to operate in automatic mode.

If the light bar indicates an error due to blockage or overload, turn off the unit and remove the bonnet and globe. Check if the gear/motor is blocked. Reassemble the unit and check the litter level. Turn on the unit and let it perform a cycle. If the problem persists, contact customer service.

USB Port

The Litter-Robot is equipped with a USB port under the flap on the back of the edge. This port provides 5V (1A) power to any external USB devices.

Optional Accessories: Battery Backup

The Litter-Robot can be equipped with an optional battery backup. This sealed 12VDC, 1.3Ah battery allows the unit to continue operating during power outages. If power to the Litter-Robot is interrupted, the unit automatically switches to battery backup mode, indicated by the control panel's light bar changing from solid blue to the power button's LED blinking blue.

Note: Wi-Fi and night light are deactivated in battery backup mode to conserve power. The light bar brightness is reduced by 50%, and the night light is deactivated to conserve power.

The battery compartment and connections are located in the motor compartment at the bottom. Battery kits can be ordered at litter-robot.com. Note: Use of accessories not sold on litter-robot.com, whisker.com, or by one of Whisker's authorized retailers is not approved or supported by Whisker. Whisker is not responsible for accidents or damages resulting from accessories not from Whisker. Any modification or unauthorized use of your Litter-Robot may result in product warranty voidance.

Use and Care

Inserting Waste Bags

The Litter-Robot comes with a waste bag already installed. These bags are specially made for Litter-Robot, but any other 37-49 L waste bag can also be used. (White or transparent waste bags are recommended.)

  1. Open a new bag for the waste drawer.
  2. Fold the edges of the waste bag over the flange of the waste drawer.
  3. Push the rest of the bag into the bottom of the waste drawer, then push the waste drawer back into place.

Carbon Filter

The Litter-Robot is equipped with a flexible carbon filter, which is mounted externally at the bottom of the globe. The filter is placed directly above the waste drawer to absorb odor. The carbon filter is easy to remove and install by starting a cleaning cycle and then opening the flap when the globe is in the dump position. Replace the carbon filter as needed. With normal use, a filter should last about 1 month. The carbon filter is not required for the unit to function.

Extra carbon filters and other odor-absorbing accessories can be ordered at litter-robot.com.

Base Seal Strips

The Litter-Robot is equipped with brush-type seal strips both at the top and bottom of the base. The seal strips help keep odor inside the waste drawer.

Replace the seal strips if you notice they are worn flat or peeling. To make the seal strips last longer, remove loose edges between replacements. Be careful not to get them wet when cleaning the base, otherwise they may start to peel. Extra seal strips can be ordered at litter-robot.com.

Emptying the Litter-Robot (for full litter change/cleaning)

  1. Press the Empty button to rotate the globe clockwise, so the litter falls through the waste opening into the waste drawer for easy disposal. Sweep any remaining litter towards the waste opening.
  2. If there is still litter in the globe, sweep it towards the waste opening.
  3. Press any button to return the globe to the home position.

IMPORTANT: Keep an eye on your cat and ensure they do not enter the globe during the emptying cycle, as the unit may not detect your cat when there is no litter inside.

Cleaning the Globe

  1. Press the Empty button to rotate the globe clockwise, so the litter falls through the waste opening into the waste drawer for easy disposal. Sweep any remaining litter towards the waste opening. Then press the Cycle or Reset button to return the globe to the home position. Ensure all litter has been removed from the globe – wet litter turns into sticky clay!
  2. Turn off the Litter-Robot and unplug the unit.
  3. Open the flap: Press and hold the buttons on both sides of the flap. Then lift and rotate the flap to the open position.
  4. Remove the globe: Lift the globe up from the base using the handle.
  5. Remove the carbon filter.
  6. Clean the globe with Litter-Robot cleaning spray or wipes, or with water and mild soap. There are no electronic components in the globe that can be damaged by soap and water. If the globe is very dirty, it can be soaked and cleaned with a garden hose.
  7. Let the globe dry completely before placing it back in the base and closing the flap (see page 27).

To remove lighter dirt, you can use a Litter-Robot cleaning cloth or a disposable wipe to wipe the upper half of the globe internally (without removing the litter). You can also manually rotate the globe to a position where the litter is behind the screen to access the flexible globe liner surface for easier cleaning. The Litter-Robot can then be used almost immediately as it dries quickly.

Litter-Robot cleaning spray and wipes can be ordered at litter-robot.com.

Cleaning the Waste Drawer

  1. Pull out the waste drawer.
  2. Clean the drawer with Litter-Robot cleaning spray or wipes, or with water and soap.

Cleaning the Base

  1. The base and control panel must never be submerged in water, sprayed, or made wet. The base and control panel contain sensors and electronics.
  2. Wipe the surfaces of the base with a cloth dampened with disinfectant. If using a spray, spray away from the base directly onto a cloth or paper towel, so no disinfectant gets on the electronics.
  3. Do not use bleach.

Reassembling the Globe

  1. Place the globe on the base approximately in the home position. If you hold the globe by the handle and let it slide back into the base, it will align roughly with the home position.
  2. Ensure the back of the globe is fully seated in the rear bearing, and the gear track engages with the motor's drive wheel.
  3. Rotate the flap downwards with a light push on the sides so the flap holds the globe. This helps ensure the flap's locking tabs align correctly with the base. Press down on the flap from above and ensure the flap clicks into place and is secure.

Note: The unit cannot operate without the flap installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my cat even go into the globe?

Cats are generally curious and will investigate new objects. Cats already accustomed to a covered litter box may investigate faster.

Whisker recommends placing the Litter-Robot in the same location as the old litter box. You can leave the old litter box near the Litter-Robot for a shorter period. Take a scoop of litter from the old litter box and pour it into the clean litter in the Litter-Robot. The scent will be familiar, and the cat will be inclined to investigate it.

Once your cat goes inside and feels the litter under their paws, they will know what to do.

Can kittens use the Litter-Robot?

Whisker does not recommend unsupervised use of the Litter-Robot in automatic mode for kittens or cats weighing less than 1.36 kg (3 lbs). Their low weight and small size may prevent the cat sensor system from activating. Cats must weigh at least 1.36 kg to use the Litter-Robot in automatic mode.

Whisker recommends keeping the Litter-Robot turned off and using it in "semi-automatic" mode. When you notice your kitten has used the Litter-Robot, turn it on so the Litter-Robot performs an automatic cleaning cycle. Once completed (2 minutes), turn off the power again. This way, your kitten is safe while getting used to the Litter-Robot at a young age – and you don't have to scoop the litter box!

CAUTION: Keep the Litter-Robot turned off and only start a cleaning cycle manually until you are sure all cats in the household are heavy enough to activate the cat sensor system.

What if my cat won't use the Litter-Robot?

If you and your cat are not completely satisfied, you can return your Litter-Robot within 90 days and receive a full refund of the purchase price. Note that you are responsible for return shipping costs. Contact customer service to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. Whisker cannot accept returns without an RMA number.

What happens if my cat tries to enter the globe while it is rotating?

The Litter-Robot's cat sensor system will detect your cat before it enters the globe, and the motor will stop. When your cat leaves the globe, the Litter-Robot waits 15 seconds before attempting to resume the cycle. See OmniSense Cat Detection System on page 27.

Are there any rakes or wires inside the globe?

No, the globe contains no rakes or wires that can harm your cat. The Litter-Robot is designed with your cat's safety in mind.

Is the electronics or power source dangerous for my cat?

No, there are no electrical components inside the globe. The Litter-Robot is powered by a safe 15-volt DC voltage using an adapter, similar to those you might have at home for a clock radio or for charging your mobile phone.

Can the globe rotate while my cat is inside?

No, the globe does not rotate while your cat is inside. The Litter-Robot's cat sensor system is triggered each time a cat enters the globe, which resets the countdown, so the cleaning cycle cannot start until an additional 7 minutes have passed.

What happens if the globe gets stuck?

If the globe gets stuck or becomes overloaded, the unit detects this using Whisker's overload detection system (see page 28). Additionally, the Litter-Robot is equipped with a double anti-pinch safety feature (see page 28).

Does the Litter-Robot require special litter?

No, the Litter-Robot only requires clumping litter. Whisker recommends using a clay-based, high-quality clumping litter. If you use lightweight litter, such as corn or wheat-based, it may not pass through the screen effectively. Certain silica gel pearls and crystals can also be used with the Litter-Robot, as long as they can pass through the screen. Transparent or white litter (most common with crystal litter) can affect the accuracy of the litter level and Drawer Full Indicator (DFI).

Litter that does not work in the Litter-Robot includes purely absorbent, non-clumping or loosely clumping litter, paper-based litter, pine-based litter, and absorbent wood pellet litter.

How much litter should I fill in the Litter-Robot?

Fill the globe with approximately 3.6-4.5 kg (8-10 lbs) of litter until it reaches the MAX fill line on the flexible globe liner when the litter is spread evenly. If there is too much litter in the globe, it will be discharged into the waste drawer during the first few cycles. Since waste clumps are removed during each cycle, it is not necessary to add extra litter to the globe.

How often should I add litter?

The Litter-Robot uses litter very efficiently because the sifting system only removes clumps. Whisker recommends checking the litter level against the MAX fill line (on the flexible globe liner) every time you empty the waste drawer, which is approximately once for a single cat or twice for multiple cats. Be careful not to overfill the globe.

Is dust a problem when the globe rotates so often and the litter moves?

No, the Litter-Robot is equipped with a dust-reducing screen design that allows litter to flow back through the screen during a cleaning cycle without creating a lot of dust.

How often should I empty the waste drawer?

It depends on how many cats you have and their size. With two average-sized cats, twice a week is normal. With a single cat, once a week is usually sufficient.

How often should I clean the inside of the globe?

It depends on your preference and your cat's behavior. Whisker recommends cleaning the inside of the globe every one to three months. See "Use and Care" on page 29.

How do I clean the outside of the Litter-Robot?

It's easy to clean the outside of the Litter-Robot. First, remove the globe, flap, and waste drawer. Spray or wipe them with Litter-Robot cleaner or with water and mild soap, or take them outside and rinse them thoroughly with a garden hose. All other surfaces can be wiped clean but must not be submerged in water.
