Adjust for a safe and comfortable fit. A gap of 1/2" to 1" should be between buckle ears and child's thigh (Fig. 34-1). Check buckle height frequently.

Using Infant Restraint

6.1 Securing Your Child in the Safety Seat / Carrier

WARNING: Children have STRANGLED in loose or partially buckled harness straps. Fully restrain the child.

Improper securing increases risk of death or serious injury from suffocation, falls, or crashes. Harness straps must be properly installed, adjusted, and secured.

  1. Check harness straps are in correct slots or adjusted to proper height (Section 5.9).
  2. Dress child in clothing that allows secure harness latching and keeps shoulder straps in place.
  3. Place seat on a firm, level surface. Move carry handle to non-rocking position. Loosen harness straps by pulling while pressing the Harness Adjuster Button. Unfasten chest clip. Unbuckle harness straps and drape them aside (Fig. 36-1).
  4. Place child in seat with bottom against the back and bottom of the seat (Fig. 36-2).
  5. Pull harness straps down over child. Ensure straps are not twisted.
  6. Insert both buckle tongues into the crotch strap buckle. Test for security (Fig. 37-1). Fasten Harness Chest Clips together. Position chest clip level with child's armpits (Fig. 37-2). Ensure tongues click and are latched. If not securely buckled, the seat will not provide protection.
  7. Pull outward on Harness Adjuster Strap to tighten harness straps. Ensure straps are flat and snug on shoulders, with no slack.
  8. Accessory products are acceptable if they do not interfere with harness assembly or adjustment.

Installation

WARNING: Thick, soft, or compressible material over 1/4 inch should not be placed behind or under the child or between the child and harness straps.

WARNING: Toys or other objects attached to carry handle can cause injury in a crash.

7.1 Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Select an acceptable location (refer to Section 4.1).
  3. Check for Active Air Bags. DO NOT use locations with active air bags.
  4. Adjust vehicle seats to prevent the safety seat from striking the dash or seat back in a crash.
  5. Ensure the vehicle seat back is locked upright.

7.2 Installation of the Safety Seat / Vehicle Belt Installation of Base:

WARNING: Toys or other objects attached to carry handle can cause injury in a crash.

  1. Remove toys/objects from carry handle.
  2. Remove seat from base (squeeze handle, lift upward). Store LATCH connectors.
  3. Place Base in rear-facing position or seat in rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat (Child must face rear).
  4. Thread vehicle belt through Base (Fig. 40-2) or Seat (Fig. 41-1) as shown.
  5. Buckle seat belt, ensuring it is not twisted and securely latched.
  6. Tighten seat belt very firmly by pushing down on the seat/base while pulling the belt. Ensure no slack.
  7. To tighten lap belt only: Feed belt back into retractor (automatic) or pull free end (manual). Ensure retractor locks.
  8. To tighten combination lap/shoulder belt: Pull shoulder portion upward while pushing down on seat/base. Unbuckle, tighten, re-buckle if needed. Repeat until very tight.
  9. For belts with slide-free latch plates, use a locking clip (Fig. 44-1) or alternate locking mechanism as per vehicle manual. Install clip 1/2 inch from buckle.
  10. Base Installation Check: Ensure nothing interferes with latching. Place seat onto base, push down until latched with a click. Pull upward to check security. If it does not latch securely, DO NOT use.
  11. Adjust carry handle: Rebound for children 22 lb (10 kg) or less; Carry for children over 22 lb or if feet touch handle.

7.3 Installation of the Base using LATCH

LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system simplifies installation. Ensure child seats are installed without vehicle seat belts. Vehicles are equipped with lower anchor points. Child seats have attachments to connect to these points.

  1. Remove toys/objects from carry handle.
  2. Locate LATCH seating position per vehicle manual.
  3. Remove seat from base. Remove LATCH connectors from storage (Fig. 47-1).
  4. Place Base in rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat.
  5. Locate LATCH anchors in vehicle seat (Fig. 47-2). Snap LATCH connectors onto the steel rod. Listen for click and pull outward to check attachment.
  6. Tighten LATCH webbing by pushing down on the base while pulling upward on webbing ends. Webbing locks in place. Ensure no slack on either side.
  7. Check Base installation: Ensure nothing interferes with latching. Place seat onto base, push down until latched. Pull upward to check security. If it does not latch securely, DO NOT use.

7.4 Setting Proper Recline of the Safety Seat / Base

WARNING: Improper recline increases risk of death or serious injury. Too upright can cause breathing problems; too reclined can cause injury in a crash.

7.5 To Deploy Elevation Foot

  1. Turn Base over with foot away (Fig. 53-1).
  2. Press elevation foot release buttons (Fig. 53-2).
  3. While holding buttons, rotate foot up into locked position (Fig. 53-3).
  4. Gently move foot back and forth to confirm it's locked (Fig. 54-1).

7.5.1 To Lower Elevation Foot

  1. Press elevation foot release buttons (Fig. 54-2).
  2. While holding buttons, rotate foot up into locked position (Fig. 54-3).

7.6 Pool Noodle / Elevation Aids

If Seat Angle Indicator is not level, stow elevation foot, place rolled towel, folded towel, or pool noodle under the front of the base (Fig. 55-1) or at the foot end (Fig. 55-2) to achieve correct position. A towel/noodle may also be placed at the back of the base for elevation (Fig. 55-3).

7.7 Base Use

Ensure elevation aid extends at least 1 inch beyond the outside edge of the base (Fig. 56-1).

7.8 Pool Noodle and Towel Examples

Illustrations show various rolled and folded towels and pool noodles.

Final Checks

8.1 Checking Safety

  1. Check harness fit and tightness (Section 6.1).
  2. Perform tightness test: Push down and side-to-side on the seat head. Ensure vehicle belt does not loosen and is very tight. If it loosens or seat moves, re-evaluate location (Section 4.1) and installation steps. DO NOT use if not tightly installed.
  3. Remove toys or objects attached to carry handle.
  4. Adjust carry handle to an approved in-vehicle use position.
