1.0 WARNINGS TO ALERT YOU TO POSSIBLE DANGERS

The ultimate safety of your child depends on the proper installation of the Safety Seat in your vehicle. Proper installation requires that you read and understand this entire manual and your vehicle's owner's manual before placing your child in the Safety Seat. DO NOT allow others to install or use this safety seat unless they completely understand its proper use and installation.

Improper use of this Safety Seat can result in death or serious injury from a crash, sharp turn, or sudden stop.

Your child's safety depends on:

  1. Choosing the best location within your vehicle for the Safety Seat. Seating positions with Active Air Bags must be avoided.
  2. Adjusting the harness shoulder strap locations to the appropriate height for your child.
  3. Adjusting the harness length to be snug around your child.
  4. Using this Safety Seat only in the rear-facing position.
  5. Proper use and routing of the seat belts in your vehicle is essential for proper installation. Not all vehicle seat belts will adequately secure the Safety Seat.
  6. Proper recline angle of the Safety Seat is required for maximum protection of your child.

3.0 SAFETY INFORMATION

3.1 About your child

  • This Safety Seat is designed and tested for a specific range of HEIGHT and WEIGHT. Using it outside these limits increases the risk of death or serious injury in a crash. Refer to the Warning label on the Safety Seat (child's right side) and the manual cover for specific limits.
  • Special needs children, such as pre-term babies, may have difficulties using this seat. The recline angle may not be appropriate. Consult your pediatrician or a health care provider if your child has special needs or breathing difficulties.
  • Never leave your child unattended, even for a moment.
  • Do not dress your child in bulky clothing that hinders the harness from being snug and properly latched.

3.2 About your vehicle

  • Proper installation and securing of your child are essential for safety. Quick turns, sudden stops, or crashes can injure your child if not properly secured or if the seat is not properly installed.
  • This manual provides general guidelines. You must also read and understand your vehicle owner's manual regarding child restraints. If your vehicle manual does not cover child restraints, contact your vehicle dealer or manufacturer.
  • Some vehicles may not have a safe location for installation, or seat belt systems that adequately hold the seat. Refer to this manual and your vehicle owner's manual for proper installation.
  • Never combine this Safety Seat or Base with any other manufacturer's seat or base. Contact your local dealer or Baby Trend for an additional base.
  • This Safety Seat is certified for use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft and conforms to applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

3.3 About Active Air Bags

NEVER PLACE THIS SAFETY SEAT IN A VEHICLE SEATING LOCATION THAT HAS AN ACTIVE AIR BAG. If an Active Air bag inflates, it can hit the safety seat with great force and cause death or serious injury to your child. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for more information on Active Air bags and child safety seat installation.

3.4 About an unoccupied Safety Seat

  • Never leave the Safety Seat or Base unsecured in your vehicle. An unsecured seat can fly through the vehicle during a crash, sudden stop, or sharp turn, causing injury to the driver or passengers. When not in use, either remove the seat/base or ensure it is securely belted to the vehicle.
  • The Safety Seat can become very hot in direct sunlight, potentially burning your child. Always check the seat for hot surfaces before placing your child in it. Cover the seat with a blanket or towel if it will be exposed to direct sunlight while you are away.

3.5 About this Safety Seat

  • This Safety Seat is made of plastic that can deform over time if objects are left in it while stored. DO NOT place heavy objects in the seat when not in use. DO NOT store the seat in the trunk with heavy objects or pressure from the trunk lid.
  • Replace the Safety Seat and Base after any accident. Even minor accidents can cause undetectable damage that may lead to failure in a subsequent accident. DO NOT use a damaged or broken seat.
  • Discontinue use after seven (7) years from the date of manufacture. The date can be found on the label on the underside of the seat or base. When discarding an out-of-date seat, disable it (e.g., remove pad and harness) to prevent its reuse.

3.6 About use as a carrier

Never leave your child unattended, even if asleep. Your child can tip or move the carrier, potentially causing suffocation if the carrier tips over or if the child's head falls forward, obstructing breathing.

  • Always place the carrier on a firm and level surface. Avoid soft or plush surfaces like beds, couches, or chairs, as the carrier has a high possibility of tipping.
  • Fall Hazard: Do not place the carrier near the edge of high surfaces like tables or shelves. Stay within arm's reach to prevent falls.
  • Strangulation Hazard: Never leave a child in the carrier with loose or undone harness straps. Always use the harness as instructed.
  • Before lifting, ensure the carry handle is firmly locked. An unlocked handle can cause the carrier to pivot and result in injury.
  • Strangulation Hazard: Do not place items with strings around a child's neck (hood strings, pacifier cords). Do not suspend strings on or over the carrier, or attach them to toys. Keep the carrier away from windows where blind cords could cause strangulation.

WARNING:

  • Never leave child unattended.
  • SUFFOCATION HAZARD: Infant carrier can roll over on soft surfaces and suffocate child. NEVER place carrier on beds, sofas, or other soft surfaces.
  • STRANGULATION HAZARD: Child can strangle in loose restraint straps. Never leave child in carrier when straps are loose or undone. Children have STRANGLED in loose or partially buckled harness straps. Fully restrain the child even when carrier is used outside the vehicle.
  • FALL HAZARD: Child's activity can move carrier. Never place carrier on counter tops, tables, or other elevated surfaces. The carrier can fall from a shopping cart. Do not use on a shopping cart.

4.0 LOCATION

SELECTING THE BEST LOCATION FOR THE SAFETY SEAT

Not every location within an automobile may be safe for the installation of this Safety Seat. Improper placement will increase the risk of death or serious injury.

Follow instructions in this manual and your vehicle owner's manual carefully. If uncertain, contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealer. You may also call Baby Trend at 1-800-328-7363 for assistance.

4.1 Overall Considerations in Selecting a Location

  • Rear seating positions are statistically safer for children than front seating positions.
  • The center rear seat position is recommended as the safest location. If possible, have an adult ride in the rear to monitor the child.
  • If the driver is the only adult and requires constant monitoring, the forward seating position may be used only if there is no passenger side Active Air bag and all other requirements for that location are met.

4.2 Check that the Vehicle Seat Meets the Following Requirements

DO NOT place rear-facing child seat on front seat with air bag. DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY can occur. The back seat is the safest place for children 12 and under.

  • Never place this Safety Seat in a vehicle seating location with an Active Air Bag. Active Air Bags inflate with great force and can cause death or serious injury. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for information on Active Air bags and child safety seat installation.

4.3 Check that the Vehicle Seat Belt is Safe to Use

The Safety Seat must be tightly installed at all times. The vehicle seat belt must maintain a tight installation. Many vehicle seat belt systems are not safe for use with this Safety Seat.

WARNING: Carefully analyze the operation of vehicle safety belts before use. Being able to thread the belt through the seat is not an indication of safety. Read this section, your vehicle owner's manual, and heed all warning labels. Your vehicle may require modification or a special seat belt.

Seat belt systems that are NOT safe for use with the Safety Seat:

  • DO NOT use a lap belt that stays loose after installation and locks only in a crash or sudden stop. These belts often have an Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) and may be found with motorized shoulder belts. They allow the seat to move excessively. See your vehicle's dealer or owner's manual for information on converting these systems. (See Fig. 15-1).
  • DO NOT use a lap/shoulder belt system where the lap belt and shoulder belt each have retractors at one end. This type of system will not adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Fig. 15-2).
  • DO NOT use a seat belt connected to the door, as these belts automatically surround the occupant when the door closes and will NOT adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Fig. 15-3).
  • DO NOT use a seat belt anchored more than 2 inches forward of the seat crease. This anchors the seat too far forward for safe restraint. (See Fig. 16-1).
  • DO NOT use a shoulder belt that moves along a track, as these systems typically move to surround the occupant when the door closes and will NOT adequately restrain the Safety Seat. (See Fig. 16-2).

If your vehicle has any of the above seat belt systems, DO NOT use it. Look for a more suitable system or contact your vehicle manufacturer about installing one.

Seat belt systems that are Adequate for use with the Safety Seat:

The following systems are adequate, provided all other requirements are met:

  • A manually adjusted lap belt that remains tight while the vehicle is in motion. Pulling the belt through the buckle after fastening tightens it. The center rear seat belt is often this type. (See Fig. 17-1).
  • A lap belt that cannot be lengthened once fastened. These often have an automatic locking retractor that allows lengthening, but once fastened, must be unbuckled and allowed to retract fully before lengthening again. (See Fig. 17-2).
  • A lap/shoulder combination seat belt with a latch plate that locks the lap belt into position. This prevents the lap belt from loosening once fastened. This system does not require a locking clip. (See Fig. 18-1).
  • A lap/shoulder combination belt system with a latch plate that slides freely along the belt is suitable if it includes a lockable retractor or if a locking clip is used. Use the provided locking clip as instructed on page 41. This style of belt must be locked to prevent movement. (See Fig. 18-2 & 18-3). Some installations may require the locking clip in the center of the base belt path. (See Fig. 18-4).

6.0 INFANT RESTRAINT

6.1 Size and Weight Limitations

DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY can occur - Proper use is required.

Your child must meet ALL these requirements:

  • Weight between 4 and 35 lbs (1.82 and 15.8 kg).
  • Height is 32 inches (81.3 cm) or less.
  • Harness Straps must be at or just BELOW child's shoulders when in the highest adjustment position.

6.2 Securing your Child in the Safety Seat / Carrier

Children have STRANGLED in loose or partially buckled harness straps. Fully restrain the child even when carrier is used outside the vehicle.

Failure to properly secure your child increases the risk of death or serious injury from suffocation or falls, or in the event of a sharp turn, sudden stop, or crash.

In a crash, the seat provides no protection unless harness straps are properly installed and adjusted. Ensure straps are properly adjusted and secured whenever using the Safety Seat, even as a carrier.

Follow these instructions carefully:

  1. Check that Harness Straps are installed in the proper slot or adjusted to the proper height (see section 5.11).
  2. Child's clothing affects proper use. Dress child so that:
    • Harness Straps can securely latch between child's legs.
    • Shoulder straps are properly located on child's shoulders.
  3. Place the Safety Seat on a firm, level surface. Move the carry handle to the non-rocking position. Loosen Harness Straps by pulling while pressing the Harness Adjuster Button. Unfasten the Harness Chest Clip. Unbuckle Harness Straps and drape them over the seat back or sides. (See Fig. 39-1).
  4. Place your child in the seat with their bottom against the back and bottom of the seat. (See Fig. 39-2).
  5. Pull harness straps down over your child. Check that straps are not twisted.

6.3 For the 5-Point Harness

  • Insert both buckle tongues into the harness buckle on the crotch strap. Pull up and test to ensure they are secure. (See Fig. 40-1).
  • Fasten the Harness Chest Clips together. (See Fig. 40-2).
  • Position the Harness Chest Clip on the Harness Straps so it is level with the child's armpits. (See Fig. 40-3).
  • Ensure tongues click into the buckle and are firmly latched by pulling upward on straps. If not securely buckled, the seat will NOT provide protection. DO NOT use if harness does not securely buckle. Call Baby Trend at 1-800-328-7363 for assistance.

Accessory products are acceptable if they do not interfere with harness assembly or proper adjustment, ensuring it remains tight on the child's shoulders.

Diagrams showing 5-point harness buckle, chest clip fastening, and chest clip positioning.

  • From the front, pull the Harness Adjuster Strap to tighten straps. Ensure straps are flat and snug on your child's shoulders. (See Fig. 41-1).
  • In Adjustable Back Safety Seat Mode, if the metal plate contacts the Blue release button (a) and limits harness length adjustment, change the metal plate to the next longest harness loop. (See Fig. 41-2).

A snug strap should not allow slack, lies in a straight line without sagging, and does not press on the child's flesh or push the body unnaturally.

Diagrams showing tightening harness straps and adjusting metal plate.

7.0 INSTALLATION

Thick, soft, or compressible material over 1/4 inch should not be placed behind or under the child or between the child and harness straps. Examples include head support pillows or rolled blankets.

WARNING: Toys or other objects attached to carry handle can cause injury in a crash. Never attach toys or other objects to handle when in vehicle. Never store or place items such as pacifiers, toys, blankets behind the Adjustable Back Headrest.

SECURING THE SAFETY SEAT OR BASE IN THE VEHICLE

Please read section 4.3, "Check that the Vehicle Seat Belt is Safe to Use," before installation. Due to the variety of vehicles and belt systems, this section provides guidance that must be combined with your vehicle manufacturer's information for proper installation.

Failure to properly install and secure the Safety Seat in a rear-facing position increases the child's risk of death or serious injury in a crash. Follow these instructions and your vehicle manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure the Safety Seat is properly located, positioned, and tightly installed.

7.1 Preparation

  1. Park your vehicle on a level surface. The level indicator on the left side of the Safety Seat will show the recline angle.
  2. Select an acceptable location as instructed in section 4.1.
  3. Check for Active Air bags. DO NOT use locations with active air bags or adjacent to them, as deployed air bags can contact the seat with great force. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for warnings about Active Air bags.
  4. If using the front seat, slide the vehicle seat as far back as possible to prevent the safety seat from striking the dash in a crash. If using the rear seat, slide the vehicle seat forward enough to prevent the Safety Seat from striking the seat back.
  5. Ensure the vehicle seat back is locked in the upright position and will not fold forward onto the Safety Seat. (See Fig. 44-1).

Diagram showing a locked seat back.

7.2 Installation of the Safety Seat / Vehicle Belt Installation of Base:

WARNING: Toys or other objects attached to carry handle can cause injury in a crash. Never attach toys or other objects to handle when in vehicle.

  1. Remove any toys or other objects attached to the carry handle before installing the car seat.
  2. Remove the Safety Seat from the base by squeezing the base release handle and lifting upward. (See Fig. 24-1). Store LATCH connectors as shown in Fig. 51-1.
  3. If using the Base, place it in the rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat (Fig. 44-2). If using the seat without the Base, place it in a rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat (Fig. 45-1). The child must face the rear of the vehicle, and the seat must be placed in a forward-facing vehicle seat.

Diagrams showing vehicle seat belt routing and seat placement.

  • Refer to Fig. 40-2 for threading the vehicle belt through the Base, and Fig. 45-1 for threading without the Base.
  • Buckle the seat belt, ensuring it is not twisted and is securely latched into the correct buckle. (See Fig. 46-1).
  • Proper installation requires the seat belt to be very tight. Push down on the seat/base while pulling and tightening the belt. Check for no slack and that the belt is tight from end to end. (See Fig. 46-1 and 46-3). Adjust handle to the correct position (See Fig. 45-2).

Diagrams showing seat belt threading, tightening, and handle positions.

To tighten a lap belt only:

  • Automatically retracted lap belt: Feed belt back into the retractor while pushing down on the seat/base. Ensure the retractor locks the belt and it remains tight. (See Fig. 46-4).
  • Manually adjusted lap belt: Pull the free end of the belt while pushing down on the seat/base. If difficult, unbuckle, tighten slightly, and re-buckle. Repeat until very tight. (See Fig. 46-5).

To tighten a combination lap/shoulder seat belt:

  • With a locking buckle: Pull upward on the shoulder portion while pushing down on the seat/base. If difficult, unbuckle, tighten slightly, and re-buckle until very tight. (See Fig. 47-1).
  • With a sliding latch plate: May require a locking clip (Fig. 47-2). Check your vehicle manual for locking retractors or other methods to prevent lap belt movement.
  • To install the locking clip: Tighten the buckled belt by pulling upward on the shoulder portion while pushing down on the seat/base. While maintaining pressure, squeeze the shoulder and lap belts together above the buckle. Unbuckle the belt carefully. Secure the shoulder belt to the lap belt by installing the locking clip 1/2 inch from the buckle (Fig. 48-1). Some installations may require the clip in the center of the base belt path (Fig. 48-2). Re-buckle and check tightness.

7.3 Installation of the Base using LATCH

The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system simplifies installation. By September 1, 2002, most vehicles are equipped with lower anchor points. Child safety seats have attachments that connect to these points.

  1. Remove any toys or other objects attached to the carry handle.
  2. Locate a LATCH seating position per your vehicle owner's manual.
  3. Remove the Safety Seat from the base (see Fig. 24-1).
  4. Remove LATCH Push On Connectors from storage (Fig. 51-1). Place the Base in the rear-facing position in a forward-facing vehicle seat (Fig. 51-2). The child must face the rear.
  5. Locate vehicle LATCH anchors (Fig. 51-2). Snap the LATCH connectors onto the anchor rods. Listen for a click and pull outward to confirm attachment. The LATCH connector indicator window will turn Green when attached to the LATCH Anchor (Fig. 52.1).
  6. Proper installation requires very tight LATCH webbing. Push down on the Base while pulling upward on each webbing end. The webbing will lock. Check for no slack and that the base is tightly installed (Fig. 52-2 and 52-4).
  7. Check that nothing interferes with proper latching of the Safety Seat to the Base. Place the seat onto the base and push down until it latches securely with a click. Pull upward to check. If it does not latch securely, it will NOT provide protection. Call Baby Trend if it does not latch.
  8. To remove the base, squeeze the webbing release button on the LATCH Push On Connector to loosen webbing (Fig. 53-1a). Note: Connector cannot be released if webbing is tight. Press the red LATCH release button on each connector to release it from the anchor (Fig. 53-1b).

Diagrams showing LATCH system components and installation steps.

7.4 Setting Proper Recline of the Safety Seat / Base

For child safety, the seat must be properly reclined. The Seat Angle Indicator on the lower portion of the shell (child's left side) assists in achieving the proper recline angle (Fig. 54-1).

Failure to properly recline the Safety Seat increases the risk of death or serious injury. If too upright, the child's head may drop forward, causing breathing problems. If too reclined, excessive force may be exerted on shoulders and neck in a crash. Follow instructions carefully.

  1. Safety Seat with Base: Ensure the vehicle is on level ground. Lock the Safety Seat onto the Base and check side-to-side levelness (Fig. 55-1). Check the Seat Angle Indicator matching your child's weight.
    • If the bubble is centered between the lines, the recline is proper for occupants 4-22 lb. (Fig. 55-2).
    • If the level line is parallel with the ground, the recline is proper for occupants greater than 22 lb. to 35 lb. (Fig. 55-3).
    • If the indicator is not centered or parallel, extend the elevation foot (see section 7.5) to achieve the correct position (Fig. 55-4). If correct elevation cannot be achieved, see section 7.5 Elevation Aids. Re-tighten the vehicle seat belt.

Diagrams showing Seat Angle Indicator use with base for different weight ranges.

  2. Safety Seat without Base: Check side-to-side levelness. Check the Seat Angle Indicator matching your child's weight (Fig. 56-1).
    • If the indicator line is not level, the seat is too upright or too reclined.
    • If too reclined, adjust as shown in (Fig. 56-2) until level.
    • If too upright, place a rolled towel or pool noodle under the foot end until level (Fig. 56-3). Re-tighten the vehicle seat belt.

8.0 FINAL CHECKS

8.1 Checking Safety Safety

  1. If your child is in the seat, check harness fit and tightness as per section 6.1.
  2. Perform the following test every time you use the seat: Firmly push down and side-to-side on the head end. Ensure the vehicle seat belt does not loosen and remains very tight. If the belt loosens or the seat moves easily, review section 4.1 for location selection and ensure all installation steps were followed. DO NOT use this seating location if the Safety Seat does not remain tightly installed!
  3. Remove any toys or other objects attached to the carry handle.
  4. Adjust carry handle to the correct position.

9.0 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

9.1 Using the Safety Seat in an Airplane

This Safety Seat may be used with or without the Base on an airplane, similar to its use in a car. Check with the airline for their policies on safety seats. The seat must be used in a forward-facing airplane seat. Ask the flight attendant for assistance. Follow installation instructions and perform final checks.

9.2 Using your Baby Trend Safety Seat with a Baby Trend Stroller

Refer to the stroller owner's manual for information on using the Safety Seat with a Baby Trend stroller.

9.3 Cleaning and Maintenance

  • Hard Surfaces: Clean plastic and metal parts by wiping with mild soap and water. DO NOT use bleach, as it may weaken plastic. Dry all surfaces with a clean towel.
  • Harness Straps: Spot clean with mild soap and water. DO NOT launder straps, as they may become damaged or weakened. Contact Baby Trend customer service to order replacement straps.

DO NOT use lubricants on any components, including the buckle and LATCH system.

  • Seat Pad Washing: Remove harness shoulder straps as instructed in section 5.11. For 5-point harness, unthread shoulder straps from harness-tie and buckle tongues. Note threading for reassembly. For Adjustable Back seats, remove headrest fabric and adjust back to lowest position, then remove seat fabric. For Fixed Back seats, carefully remove seat fabric. For 5-point harness models, do not unthread the lower portion of the harness.
  • DO NOT use the Safety Seat Without the Seat Pad.
  • For care and maintenance, see the fabric tag.
  • Reinstall the seat pad when dry, carefully reassembling shoulder straps at the appropriate height (see section 5.11). For 5-point harness models, thread straps through pad bottom slots and buckle through the rear opening. Thread straps through buckle tongues and harness-tie.
  • Inspect harness straps from front and rear to ensure they are not twisted. Twisted straps can prevent proper tightening and adequate restraint. Before use, pull on straps to ensure they are securely reattached.
