Nextbase 222 Dash Cam
Brand: Nextbase
Introduction
This series of Nextbase™ dashcams is designed for simple operation. It is recommended not to change the default settings, as they have been carefully selected to provide the best performance for daily use.
Check the dashcam's firmware version in the System Info menu. The latest versions are available for download and update on the Nextbase website: www.nextbase.com
General Usage Notes
It is important to use a high-quality Class 10 or U1 microSD card to handle the high data rates generated by high-definition recording. For best results, Nextbase recommends using their own branded SD cards.
Your Nextbase™ dashcam is set to record videos in 1-minute files, making each file manageable for sharing. The dashcam automatically deletes the oldest files to make space for new recordings, ensuring you always have enough storage for your journey.
Typically, a 16GB card stores at least 1.5 hours of footage.
You can adjust the time and date in the Settings menu (Time & Date) to account for time zone differences.
There are three camera modes: Video, Photo, and Playback. Press the MODE button on the dashcam to select the desired mode.
- Video Mode: The default mode for recording video.
- Photo Mode: Allows capturing still images.
- Playback Mode: Allows viewing recorded videos or photos on the LCD screen.
Automatic Start/Stop Technology
The dashcam automatically turns on when power is supplied. This may be upon connection in some vehicles, or when the ignition is turned on. The dashcam performs an automatic shutdown when the power supply is interrupted.
Tips for Best Video Recording
- Install the dashcam in the center of the windshield, ideally behind the rearview mirror, to avoid distracting the driver.
- Ensure the windshield area viewed by the dashcam is clean and within the wiper zone for clear videos.
- Angle the camera towards the road to avoid capturing too much sky, which can make the road appear darker due to automatic exposure compensation.
- Remove unnecessary items from the dashboard that could cause reflections on the windshield.
- Consider a Nextbase™ polarizing filter to reduce dashboard glare.
Tips for Stable Memory Card Performance
- Format the memory card regularly, recommended every 2-3 weeks. This erases all files and prepares the card for continuous use. Ensure you download desired files before formatting, as it deletes all content.
- Format your memory card within the dashcam to ensure it is structured specifically for your camera. Access this via MENU (twice) > Format Card.
- Always turn off the dashcam before removing the SD card to prevent damage to the card or its files.

Specific legal requirements may apply for operation outside Great Britain if dashcams are used in a commercial or employment context. We recommend clarifying legal requirements with your legal advisor before commencing use of dashcams in a commercial or employment context.
G-Sensor Notes
The G-Sensor in the dashcam measures the forces exerted on it relative to 'G', the nominal force exerted on us when standing on the Earth's surface. The G-Sensor also triggers to protect the current recording if a predetermined force value is exceeded. The G-Sensor's protection is compromised if the dashcam is NOT installed vertically (i.e., with the lens facing the direction of travel).
G-acceleration data derived from a G-Sensor is not always absolutely accurate, as it is derived through a sampling process over time. The accuracy of the recorded G-Sensor value depends on when the acceleration occurred at the point of measured sampling.
The trigger thresholds for video protection depend on a trigger value being exceeded between two consecutive samples in one of the three G-Sensor axes. If the automatic G-Sensor protection does not trigger during an event, the protect button must be pressed to secure the file. File protection can also be performed via the dashcam's playback function or the MyNextbase Connect™ app for compatible Wi-Fi enabled models.

Vehicle Installation
Follow these instructions for first-time installation. For daily use, simply detach the camera from the mount.
Step 1: Insert microSD Card
Insert a suitable microSD card (Class 10, U1, minimum 48Mbps) into the dashcam, ensuring the gold contacts face the screen. Push the card until it clicks into place.
Note: You may need to use a coin or similar object to push the card fully in. Pressing again will release it. For best results, use Nextbase™ SD cards. Do not remove or insert the SD card while the dashcam is powered on, as this can damage the card.
Step 2: Remove Dust Cover
Remove the dust cover from the front of the dashcam to access the mounting point. Lift the cover off the dashcam housing.
Note: If the dashcam will not be used for an extended period, replace the dust cover to protect the components from contaminants.
Step 3: Mount Bracket to Dashcam
Attach the mount to the dashcam under the dust cover. Magnets in the mount and camera hold the two components together.
For information on changing mounts, see page 16.
Step 4: Connect Vehicle Power Cable
Connect the included vehicle adapter cable to the dashcam mount's USB port. Do NOT connect the vehicle adapter cable to the dashcam's USB port.
Step 5: Connect to Vehicle Power
Connect the vehicle cable to your vehicle's 12-24V DC outlet. The dashcam will automatically turn on and start recording when power is supplied. In some vehicles, this happens upon connection; in others, it activates when the ignition is turned on.
A Nextbase hardwire kit is also available, connecting directly to the vehicle's fuse box for a permanent power supply, leaving your 12V DC socket free for charging other devices. The Nextbase™ wiring kit includes a 12-24V DC to 5V DC converter and battery protection features.
Route the power cable around the windshield towards the 12-24V DC outlet, ensuring it does not obstruct your view or create a distraction. Use the included cable routing tool to help access vehicle trim for neat cable management.
Important: Do NOT connect the dashcam directly to the 12V DC supply by cutting off the vehicle adapter end of the cable, as this can cause permanent damage.
Step 6: Remove Adhesive Film
Peel off the red protective film from the adhesive surface on the mount.
Step 7: Align Dashcam
Ensure the dashcam is mounted horizontally and aligned directly with the windshield. Check that objects on the dashcam display appear level, and adjust as needed.
Step 8: Attach Dashcam to Windshield
Once satisfied with the installation and alignment, firmly press the mount onto the windshield.
Step 9: Adjust Dashcam
With the mount attached to the windshield, ensure the objects on the dashcam display are level and adjust as necessary. The road ahead should be centered in the frame, within the middle third of the display. Capturing too much sky may cause road details to be underexposed; ensure the road is clearly visible on the dashcam display. Do NOT attempt to adjust the dashcam while driving.
Installation Location
Please read and follow the guidelines below for safe operation of your dash cam in the vehicle.
It is the user's responsibility to install the device in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Install the dashcam so that it does NOT obstruct the driver's view of the road (red zone in diagram), preferably on the passenger side of the vehicle and behind the rearview mirror. The dashcam must view the road through a clear section of the windshield within the area covered by the wipers (green zone in diagram). However, the dashcam should be installed so it does not significantly intrude into the wiped area. A 40mm intrusion into the wiped area is the maximum permitted by UK law.
Before attaching the dashcam to your windshield, familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations. Laws may prohibit or restrict the attachment of items to a vehicle's windshield.
Hiding Cables
Ensure any dangling cables do not obstruct your rear view. Avoid kinks in the cable when routing. Use the included cable routing tool to help access vehicle trim for neat cable management.
Installation Location Notes
- Do NOT mount the dashcam in front of the driver (as indicated by the red zone in the diagram).
- When installing in a vehicle, securely mount the device on the windshield and hide the power cable under the trim where possible.
- Ensure the power cable does not obstruct driver controls like the steering wheel, pedals, or gear selector.
- Mount the dashcam so it does NOT obstruct any airbags or mirrors.
- Clean the windshield at the mounting point before installation and slightly moisten the suction cup for optimal adhesion.
- It is recommended NOT to operate the dashcam while driving. The integrated auto start/stop technology makes manual operation unnecessary.
- Adjusting settings and reviewing footage should be done when the vehicle is parked, not while driving.
- After initial setup, enable the screensaver. This will automatically turn off the screen 30 seconds after the vehicle starts, preventing driver distraction.
Accessories
Optional accessories such as a hardwire kit and a polarizing filter can enhance your dashcam setup. More information is available in the Nextbase™ Accessories Manual at www.nextbase.com.
Changing Mounts
Follow the instructions below to switch between the 3M adhesive tape and suction cup mounts. Align the pins on the mount with the holes on the adhesive/suction device and slide firmly to the right until it clicks. To remove the top part, reverse the process and slide to the left until it detaches from the mounting pins.
Before mounting, ensure the windshield is free of grease and dirt. Clean with a warm, clean cloth if necessary. Ensure the mount and dashcam do not obstruct the driver's view.
Removing Adhesive Residue
To remove adhesive mounts from your windshield, use hot soapy water or an alcohol-based solution to dissolve sticky residue and ensure the windshield remains clean and clear. Residue left for extended periods can be harder to remove. If hot water or an alcohol solution is ineffective, a small sharp blade may be used carefully, keeping fingers protected and the blade flat against the glass to avoid scratches.

- Cannot Delete Files: Check if files are protected. Unprotect them first via the playback menu.
- Screen Disappears After Minutes: Screensaver is active. Set to OFF in settings.
- "Cluster Size Incorrect" Message: SD card was formatted on another device. Format the SD card in the dashcam's settings menu.
- Battery Not Charging: Ensure dashcam is connected to power and the blue LED is lit. Charging takes approx. 2 hours. If the issue persists, the vehicle's power supply might be the cause.
- Battery Lasts Only 30 Seconds: This is normal; the battery design allows for automatic shutdown upon vehicle power interruption and is not intended as a primary power source.
- Battery Lasts Only 10-15 Minutes: This may indicate a battery issue.
- "SD Card Error" Message: The microSD card may be unusable. Back up important files to your PC and format the SD card via the dashcam's settings menu.
- "Card Full" Message: The SD card is full, likely due to too many protected files that cannot be deleted to make space. Transfer important files to your PC, delete unnecessary ones, or format the SD card.
- Park Mode Prevents Stopping Recording: To disable Park Mode, turn off the dashcam, remove the microSD card, then turn it back on and disable "Park Mode" in the Settings menu.
- MENU Button Does Nothing: Ensure the dashcam is not recording. If recording restarts immediately after stopping, refer to the Park Mode section.
- Google Chrome Malware Warning: Temporarily disable Chrome's Safe Browsing feature to download and install the playback software, then re-enable it.
- No PC Menu on Connection: Try different USB ports and an alternative Mini-USB cable. Ensure connection is to the dashcam's USB port, not the mount.
- Camera Feels Warm: This is normal during typical use, especially when recording HD video or communicating via Wi-Fi.
- Unexplained Issues: Reset the dash cam to factory settings via the Settings menu and try again. If the problem persists, contact Nextbase support.
