Johnson Rotary Laser Level 40-6535 & 40-6541 Quick Start Guide
Thank you for purchasing this high-accuracy dual-slope horizontal rotary laser. This laser is ideal for critical level measurements, where accuracy can't be compromised.
Key Features
- Class Illa long-range laser
- Dual-slope for grading
- Tilt indicator
- Remote control
Typical Applications
- Setting and leveling concrete formwork
- Grading
- Concrete flatwork
Getting Started
- Insert batteries into the laser and the remote control.
- Most functions of the laser require the remote control for operation. Note: The laser will stop receiving remote signals after 30 minutes of inactivity. Press the power button [⚡] on the laser to re-enable communication with the remote.
- Tap the power button [⚡] on the remote to power on the laser. The laser will self-level and rotate. The laser will flash if out of its self-leveling range. If this occurs, bring the laser within 5° of level and restart it.
- Tap the tilt indicator button [⚠️] on the remote to disable or enable the tilt indicator. See the Tilt Indicator section for more information.
- To power off the laser, tap the power button [⚡] on the laser. The laser will turn off and enter sleep mode for 30 minutes. It can be woken with the remote control or the laser keypad. After 30 minutes, it will fully power down and stop receiving remote control signals in order to conserve battery.
Button Guide
Most functions of this laser are accessed via the remote control, minimizing disturbances during operation. The power and tilt indicator buttons can also be accessed from the laser unit.
Remote Control Buttons:
- POWER [⚡]
- SLOPE AXIS [↔️]
- TILT INDICATOR [⚠️]
- ENTER BUTTON [✔️]
- SLOPE UP/DOWN [⬆️⬇️]
Laser Unit Buttons:
- POWER [⚡]
- TILT INDICATOR [⚠️]
Visual Description: The remote control is red with clearly labeled buttons. The laser unit is red and black, featuring a handle and a visible laser emitter.
Tilt Indicator
The tilt indicator disables the laser if it's bumped while operating, preventing inaccurate measurements.
To enable the tilt indicator:
- With the laser powered on, press the tilt indicator button [⚠️] on the laser unit.
- The Tilt Mode LED will flash for 30 seconds. During this time, the laser will automatically re-level and restart if bumped, allowing for final height adjustments.
- After 30 seconds, the Tilt Mode LED will remain on, indicating Tilt Mode is active. Any disturbance will cause the laser to stop spinning and flash to alert you.
- Reset the laser after a tilt event or exit tilt mode by pressing the power button [⚡] on the laser unit.
Dual-Axis Slope Mode
Dual-axis slope mode angles the laser beam in either the X, Y, or both axes, useful for sloping concrete slabs towards edges or corners. The tilt indicator cannot be used in this mode; ensure the laser is not bumped.
You can slope only one axis, keeping the other fixed level. However, if the laser is moved, it will not automatically re-level.
To enter dual-slope mode:
- Tap the slope axis button [↔️] on the remote to start dual-slope mode.
- The X axis indicator will blink. Use the up [⬆️] and down [⬇️] buttons on the remote to adjust the slope in the X axis. Tap for minor adjustments, or press and hold for larger adjustments.
- Tap the slope axis button [↔️] on the remote to toggle axes and set slope in the Y direction. The Y axis indicator will blink. Use the up [⬆️] and down [⬇️] buttons on the remote to adjust the slope in the Y axis.
- If the laser exceeds its slope range, rotation will stop, the laser will flash, and an alarm will sound. Reduce the slope in either axis until operation resumes.
- Exit dual slope mode by holding the slope axis button [↔️] for 3 seconds. The laser will self-level and begin spinning horizontally.
Pro Tip: Setting a Specific Slope
Use a detector and grade rod for precise slope setting (e.g., 1” per 10’ slope):
- Level the laser and let it spin in horizontal mode.
- Mark a point 10' from the rotary, orthogonal to the desired axis.
- Find grade with a grade rod; lower the detector 1”.
- Adjust laser slope until the detector reads “on-grade”.
- Set detector height to read “on-grade” when positioned next to the rotary.
- Do not make further detector height adjustments. The bottom of the grade rod will consistently read the proper ground level at all locations, matching a 1:120 or 1”/10’ slope.
Using a Laser Detector
Laser detectors help locate the laser beam in conditions where it's not visible to the naked eye, such as outdoors with high ambient light or over long distances.
Models 40-6535 and 40-6541 include Johnson's dual-sided laser detector model 40-6715. They are also compatible with the Johnson 40-6791 machine mount detector for use with skid steers, excavators, and similar equipment.
40-6715 Detector Operation Guide:
- Power on the detector by pressing the power button [⚡].
- Adjust sound level and backlight using the volume [?] and backlight [?] buttons.
- Press the accuracy button [?] to set accuracy. Higher accuracy provides more precise readings; lower accuracy allows quicker beam location for less critical tasks.
- With the detector window [?] facing the rotary laser, move the detector up and down until it crosses the laser beam. It will beep when the beam is located.
- Use the arrow on the LCD [?️] as a guide to find grade. Move the detector in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- When the arrow becomes a solid line and the beeping turns into a solid tone, you have located grade.
Visual Description: The handheld laser detector features a display screen (DETECTOR LCD), buttons for POWER [⚡], BACKLIGHT [?], VOLUME [?], and ACCURACY [?], and a DETECTOR WINDOW [?].
