Page 1: Initial Assembly
Valve Body Identification: This Kit only fits Valve Bodies (VB) WITHOUT this balance hole. If your original plate HAS this balance hole, USE the SK 48RE kit.
Diagram showing a valve body with a balance hole highlighted, used for identification.- Install Seal Rings: If the transmission is apart, install Seal Rings. Diagram shows transmission components: Forward drum, Direct drum, Pump. It indicates 'One small Seal' and 'Two large Seals'. It also notes 'Two smallest rings not furnished in kit.'
- Install 1-2 Accum Spring: Install new short lower 1-2 Accum spring as shown. Some models use the upper spring; reuse it. Diagram shows 'Short Lower' and 'Upper Re-use if equipped' springs for installation.
- Tap Tapered Orifice: Skip this step if you are using the NEW separator plate provided. With a VB bolt and a small hammer, GENTLY tap the Tapered Orifice into this hole.
- Install Servo Return Spring & Adjust Band: Discard original spring. Install new White Servo return spring. For Front band Adjustment: Snug with a short wrench, then back off 1-3/4 to 2 turns. Diagram shows the White Servo return spring and the Front band adjustment process.
Page 2: Converter & TV Valve Modifications
Note: Installing converter with multiple clutches or working on a non-lockup transmission, SKIP step one.
- Drill Lockup Holes: Drill one or two .076 to .096 holes down through the bottom of the most outboard passage. One Hole = Slightly firmer Lockup. Two Holes = Much firmer Lockup. No cross drilling is required. If the VB has a cross-drilled hole here from a previous repair, plug it. Diagram illustrates drilling one or two small holes (.076 to .096) into a transmission passage for firmer lockup.
- Install TV Spring: For NORMAL USE, skip this step. If later throttle-on up-shifts are desired, install new GREEN TV spring. No need to grind TV valve. Diagram shows the GREEN TV spring and TV valve. A note advises: 'Got a worn TV valve bore? Order P/N TF-TV. A redesigned TV valve that's a “drop-in” fix. No special tools required!'
- File Valve Body Notch: Turn the valve body over. Using the edge of a large file, file a notch about halfway through the thickness of this partition. Diagram indicates where to file a notch across the bore top to bottom, described as 'It's not fussy.'
Page 3: Boost Valve & Transfer Plate
Warning: Watch out for wear in the Boost Valve bore area, which causes repeated rear band failure & lazy or erratic pressure rise. Order P/N TF-Boost. This redesigned boost valve fixes the issue without any special tools required, offering an easy "drop-in" solution to a high-risk failure.
Diagrams show Boost Valve and Spring components. A note states 'Factory Parts Shown for information only.'- Install New Spring: Install New Spring: Yellow for 12 valve Diesel Engines, White for 24 valve Diesel Engines, White for all Gas Engines.
- Install Transfer Plate: Install new transfer plate between Cover and part throttle body. Diagrams show Cover, Transfer plate, and PT Body components. A note states: 'Transfer plate does NOT go on spring side!'
- Install Pin: Using a pick and small hammer, taper the top of this hole to help start the pin. Install the furnished pin into this hole, using needle nose pliers and a small hammer. File flush if needed. The PT body must sit flush against the VB. Diagram illustrates the process of tapering a hole and installing a pin into the PT Body.
Page 4: Manual Valve & Check-balls
- Install Manual Valve & Comb: Insert spring and ball into VB pocket using the Mumbly Peg to hold the ball in place. Insert new Manual Valve and reassemble the rooster comb. Remove peg. Diagrams show components of the New Design Manual Valve: Arm Tip, Tapered Land, Rooster comb, spring, ball, and Mumbly Peg.
- Check-balls & Cherrybomb: There are Six Check-balls and One Cherrybomb. Quantities: Five 1/4" (.250), One 11/32" (.343). Discard one check-ball and install the Cherrybomb here. Careful! Align the stem of the Cherrybomb through the hole in the plate when putting VB halves together. Diagram shows the Cherrybomb and lists check-ball quantities. A note states: 'Detent Ball sloppy in the pocket? Order P/N TF-Detent. New “drop-in” design keeps manual valve indexed correctly!'
- Four Land Switch Valve Modification: For Four Land switch valve ONLY: Grind one notch on a slight angle to about the middle of this land. Do NOT grind the three-land switch valve. If your VB has a three-land switch valve, reuse the original separator plate. Diagrams show a Four Land Switch valve and a Three Land Switch valve.
- Manual Valve Position Adjustment: With the valve all the way inboard (Park position), the right edge of the Tapered land must be flush with the right edge of partition "A". (.030" from flush either way is ok.) To Adjust: Bend Arm tip with pliers. A cutaway view of Partition "A" shows the Tapered Land of the Manual Valve flush with the right edge of Partition "A".
Page 5: Accumulator Housing & RE Models
Note: If working on an RH model with Governor on output-shaft, Skip Step 3.
- Drill & Plug Accumulator Housing: Place a .156 drill into the hole shown and drill all the way through the accumulator housing and out the other side. With a small punch, drive a plug into the hole just below flush. Diagram illustrates drilling through the accumulator housing and driving a plug into the hole.
- Drive Tapered Plug: With a small punch, drive a tapered plug into this hole just below flush. Diagram shows a tapered plug being driven into a hole.
- RE Models Only: Install Bushing & Spring: Install limit bushing, 3/16 ball, and White spring as shown. Diagram shows components for RE Models installation: limit bushing, 3/16 ball, and White spring.
- Install Transfer Plate: Install new transfer plate as shown between VB & Accumulator housing. Diagram illustrates the installation of the transfer plate between the VB and Accumulator housing.
- Install New Springs: Discard original spring. Install new Red Springs. Diagram shows new Red Springs being installed.
Page 6: RE Models VB Plate Modifications
Note: If working on an RH model with Governor on output-shaft, Skip Steps 1, 2 & 3.
- RE Models Only: Install New Spring: Install new spring here. (Colors specified for 12 Valve Diesels, 24 Valve Diesels, and Gas Engines). Diagram shows springs for RE Models installation.
- RE Models Only: Add Hole to Lower VB Plate: We need to add a hole to the Lower VB Plate. Use the channel casting as a drill guide. Place the plate on the channel using two VB bolts to line it up as shown, then flip it over. Diagram illustrates lining up the Lower VB Plate on a channel casting using VB bolts.
- RE Models Only: Drill .103 Hole: Use this rectangle passage as a guide to drill a .103 hole through the lower plate as shown. Diagram shows a rectangle passage used as a guide to drill a .103 hole. A note states: 'Step 3 is NOT done on Large plate! Do it on smaller LOWER plate!'
- Select & Enlarge Plate Holes: Select Plate: Use New Plate with 4-land switch valve VB ONLY! (See page 4- Switch Valve ID). Reuse original plate if VB has 3-land switch valve or has a large suction hole! Now enlarge both 2-3 holes: Stock Engine .089 to .093, Modified Engines .103 to .106. For Snow Plow ONLY: Make R hole .093 and install ball. Diagram shows the Upper VB Plate with areas 2-3 and R marked. A note says: 'Enlarged Suction hole? Reuse your original plate!' Another diagram shows a 1/4" Check-ball installation with a note: 'ONLY install 1/4" check-ball here if using plate with hole R.'
Page 7: RH Models without Solenoid Body
Note: RH Models without Solenoid Body, Skip Step 1.
- Install New Plate Assembly: Install new plate against channel casting, then gasket and solenoid body. Diagram shows Solenoid Body, Gasket, and New Plate components.
- Install Lockup Bracket: Install the new Lockup Bracket. Diagram shows Plug, Boost & Spring components, and the Lockup Bracket.
- Enlarge Hole for Pressure: For modified engines or if you need more lockup pressure and new rings ARE installed (page 1 step 1), enlarge this hole in the original plate to .076 to .096. Bigger hole = More Pressure. Is the hole drilled too Big already? Drill NEW tuning plate to the desired size & install it UNDER the original plate. Lockup too firm with a triple disc? Use tuning plate & drill smaller hole. Be sure to line up the hole in both plates as you tighten the retaining screws if using The New Tuning Plate. Diagram shows a 3/16" Check-ball. Diagrams also show the New Tuning Plate and Original Plate, emphasizing hole alignment.
Page 8: PR Valve & Fluid Level
- Install Shim & Spring Seat: Install New shim and spring seat on PR valve before installing new inner and outer PR springs. Diagrams show PR Valve, Shim, Spring Seat, Inner Plain spring, Outer Orange spring, and Spring retainer. A note advises: 'Install Spring Seat as shown. Make sure flat on spring seat has some clearance from casting. File casting if necessary to give it a little room to rotate slightly. Do not allow it to bind between PR valve and casting!'
- PR Adjustment: With a 3/16" allen wrench, turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the spring seat is just flush against the inside edge of the spring retainer. Then turn counterclockwise 2 turns for mild horsepower, 4 turns for major horsepower. Stock HP leave flush. Diagram shows the adjustment screw and indicates 'Flush Here'.
Fluid level checking: While the new manual valve provides oil to the converter in park, DO check fluid level in Neutral for accuracy as the converter is charged MORE in neutral.
