Kit Benefits

This kit is designed to provide improved shifting performance, addressing issues such as rough 2nd gear shifts (especially when cold), lack of 3rd gear after a 3-2 or 4-2 kickdown, direct clutch inner seal leaks, and improving 1-2 shifts, 2-3 shifts at heavy throttle, and 4th gear/lockup engagement.

Upper Valve Body Procedures

General Description

Enhances the 1-2 shift for a shorter, smoother engagement with no bangs.

Checkball Information

Use five steel checkballs, sizes .214 to .218. Do not use plastic balls. Apply Vaseline to keep checkballs in place; do not use grease.

Installation Steps

Hello Mechanic: Install the accumulator valve first. Then install the flat washer on the stem of the accumulator valve, followed by the remaining parts as shown.

Step 1: Accum Valve Removal

Remove the accumulator valve. Chamfer the partition as shown at the bottom of the page. Clean the bore. Reinstall the valve, the WHITE spring, end plug, and retainer.

Here's Why:

The edge of the valve (A) contacts the partition (C), deforming the bore and causing the valve to stick at land B.

Here's how to fix it:

By hand, create a slight chamfer in the valve bore at point "C" using a sharp 7/16" or 15/32" drill.

Step 2: 2nd Accum Piston Installation

Install the washer and the PLAIN spring provided with the kit.

Install the YELLOW spring.

Enlarge holes with a .110 drill.

Enlarge a hole with a .086 drill.

Main Valve Body Procedures

Step 1

Install the ORANGE spring.

Step 2

Install the GREEN pressure regulator spring furnished.

Step 3

Enlarge the limit drain holes with a 1/4" drill.

Step 4

Install Springs & Gold Steel Balls furnished. Gold Steel balls are .265 diam.

LISTEN UP:

Install the retainers in the correct locations in the Valve Body (VB).

3-4 Clutch Drum and Band Adjustment

Band Adjustment Check

You must be able to wiggle the band back and forth at least 1/16".

Band Adjustment Procedure

Snug the band with a short wrench, then back off 2 to 2-1/2 turns and tighten the lock nut. Use a 14mm wrench and a T30 TORX bit.

Installation Steps

Install the 2nd piston with the new cushion seat and spring. If the band wiggles on the drum 1/16" by hand, the band adjustment can be skipped.

Install the Cushion Seat, ORANGE, and RED springs furnished.

Insert the overlap part of the Wire into the groove at 6 O'clock. Then shape the Seal as shown and install it into the groove.

Technical Note

A poor design in the 3-4 clutch inner piston seal can cause the transmission to lose 3rd and 4th gears, which is usually worse when the transmission is hot or after kickdown.

Bolt specifications are as follows:

Tightening Specifications

Tighten VB bolts to 95 IN. LB. Pan bolts to 65-80 IN. LB. Drain plug to 25 FT. LB.

General Information

There are 13 bolts necessary to remove the VB from the case.

Tightening Specifications

Tighten VB bolts to 95 IN. LB. Tighten hold down bolts and plates to 70-80 IN. LB.
