Merlin Protector System Safety Reversing Sensor (Model 774ANZ)

The Merlin Protector System™ is designed to enhance the safety and functionality of your garage door motor. It utilizes an invisible infrared beam across the garage door opening. If an obstruction breaks this beam while the door is closing, the door will automatically stop and reverse to its fully open position.

Safety and Installation Guidelines

Always review the safety warnings in your garage door opener's owner's manual. Ensure the door and all its fixtures are in good condition before installation.

For commercial applications, consult the appropriate commercial opener manual.

Installation Height

To protect small children, install The Protector System™ no higher than 100 mm (approximately 4 inches) above the floor. For commercial doors, an additional beam is required at 650 mm (approximately 25.5 inches) above the floor.

Pre-Installation Steps

  • Disconnect power to the garage door opener before installing The Protector System™.

Assembly Process

The Protector System™ is supplied pre-assembled with two sensors, wiring, and wall brackets. Follow these steps for installation:

Mounting Brackets and Sensors

Install the mounting brackets and sensors on either side of the inside of the garage door opening. Position them at a height of no greater than 100 mm off the garage floor.

Figure 1 Description: This diagram illustrates the recommended sensor mounting heights: 100 mm above the floor for residential doors, and 650 mm and 100 mm above the floor for commercial doors. It also indicates that the red LED on the sensor should be illuminated.

The brackets are designed for versatile wall or floor fixing. Drill the required holes and install the brackets using the provided wall plugs and screws. Ensure the brackets do not obstruct the door's movement.

Figure 2 Description: This figure shows the components for mounting: a 774 IR Sensor, a Wall Bracket, an M6 Flange Nut, a 2-core wire cable, a Wall Screw, and a Plastic Wall Plug. It details how the sensor attaches to the bracket.

Figure 3 Description: This illustration depicts the assembled sensor and bracket unit.

Wiring Process

Align the sensors so they face each other and tighten them if necessary. Ensure the wiring exits from the bottom of the housing to maintain the correct IP rating and continued operation.

One sensor acts as the Sending Eye, and the other as the Receiving Eye. Avoid positioning sensors in direct sunlight, as this may interfere with beam operation.

Run both sets of wires back to the opener's CONTROL PANEL. Ensure the wiring is well supported and does not interfere with or get damaged by the movement of door panels or spring hardware.

At the opener end, cut the wires to the correct length and strip approximately 15 mm from each wire. Twist the two white wires together and connect them to the white terminal. Twist the two grey wires together and connect them to the grey terminal.

For specific connection details for your product, refer to the following pages or your Product Handbook.

Activation

Once The Protector System™ is connected to the opener, it will be automatically activated. Ensure the indicator lights on the sensors are illuminated.

Cable Management

Sectional Door Openers - Install Cabling

Run both sets of sensor cables up the door tracks, across the header wall to the centre, and back to the opener.

Figure 4 Description: Illustrates cable routing along the top of the rail towards the opener.

Figure 5 Description: Shows the use of cable tie mounts along the rail to secure the cable, and the 2-way connector for connecting the beams to the opener. It also notes that for low ceilings, mounts can be attached to the side of the rail.

Clean the contact area with alcohol wipes and secure the self-adhesive cable mounts to the rails. Attach the cable using cable ties. Ensure the cable is well supported and does not interfere with or get damaged by the movement of door panels or spring hardware.

Roller Door Openers - Install Cabling

Figure 7 Description: Shows the placement of cable tie mounts at the top, middle, and close to the sensor, along with a 100 mm cardboard template for sensor placement.

Clean the contact area with alcohol wipes and secure the self-adhesive cable mounts to the rails. Attach the cable using cable ties. Ensure the cable is well supported and does not interfere with or get damaged by the movement of door panels or spring hardware.

Testing the Protector System™

  • Press the remote control push button to open the door.
  • Place an object large enough to obstruct the sensor beam in the path of the door.
  • Press the remote control push button to close the door. The door should not move more than 40 mm.

The door opener will not close from a remote control if the indicator light in either sensor is blinking, indicating misalignment or obstruction.

Note: After initialization, sensors are fail-safe. If removed, the opener will not close until they are re-installed.

Troubleshooting

Indicator Light Issues

If the Sending Eye or Receiving Eye indicator light does not glow after installation, check for:

  • Electric power to the opener.
  • A short in the grey/white wires (e.g., under staples or at screw terminal connections).
  • Incorrect wiring between sensors and opener.
  • An open wire (wire break).
  • The lock switch on the Multi-Function Door Control Panel being activated (deactivate it).

Sensor Blinking

If both sensors are blinking, realign them or remove any obstruction.

Sensor Damage

If sensors are damaged and cannot be repaired, they will need replacement.

Resetting the Sensor Input

To reset the sensor input:

  1. Remove all sensor wires from the opener.
  2. Turn power off for 2 seconds.
  3. Turn power on for 2 seconds.
  4. Turn power off for 2 seconds.

Turn the power back on and test your opener; it should now open and close using the remote control.
