Tektronix P6006 Probe Instruction Manual
Introduction
The P6006 Probe is a passive probe featuring 10X attenuation. It is designed for oscilloscopes that have an input resistance of 1 megohm and an input capacitance of up to 55 picofarads (pf). The probe serves to decrease both resistive and capacitive loading on the circuit under test.
Characteristics
Key characteristics of the P6006 Probe include:
- Attenuation Factor: 10X, ±3%
- Input Resistance: 10 megohms, ±2%
- Probe Resistance: 9 megohms, ±2%
- Input Capacitance: Refer to Table 1 for specific values based on cable length and plug-in capacitance.
- Risetime: The probe is rated for 600 Vdc or 600 Vac peak-to-peak, or 600 V peak and dc combined. Maximum voltage must be derated at higher frequencies; consult the "Derating Curves" section.
- Cable Length: Available in nominal lengths of 3.5', 6', 9', or 12', measured between the bases of the cable strain reliefs.
- Environmental Capacitance: A 9-megohm resistor is factory-installed for optimal transient response. To replace this resistor, a new probe body must be ordered through a local Tektronix Field Office.
- Operating Temperature: The probe operates normally at temperatures up to 75° C.

Compensation
The P6006 Probe requires compensation whenever it is transferred between different oscilloscopes or plug-in units. This ensures accurate attenuation for transient and sine-wave signals.
Procedure:
- Touch the probe tip to the oscilloscope's calibrator output connector.
- Display several cycles of the signal.
- Loosen the flanged locking sleeve by several turns.
- Adjust the probe body and tip assembly to achieve the correct waveform.
- After obtaining the correct waveform, hold the probe body and tip assembly firmly and carefully tighten the locking sleeve.
- Make the final adjustment by holding the locking sleeve and probe body while turning the probe base.

Derating Curves
The derating curves provide information on the maximum continuous-wave voltages that can be applied to the P6006 Probe at higher frequencies. For pulses with a specific duty cycle and repetition rate, the following formula can be used to determine the maximum peak voltage:
E = Voltage from curve at CW frequency / √Duty Factor
Where: Duty Factor = pulse duration / pulse period. For pulse durations exceeding 1 second, the signal should be considered as dc.

Input Rp and Xp vs. Frequency Curves
These graphs illustrate the input resistance (Rp) and reactance (Xp) of the P6006 probe as a function of frequency for different cable lengths.
