Horizon Heat Pump Solutions
Trane® Horizon™ Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) Units are a comprehensive line of products designed for year-round dew point control applications. Water-Source Heat Pumps (WSHP) and Air-Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) are now available on all Horizon models, enabling fully integrated and automated systems that leverage sustainable, high-efficiency comfort technology.
Key Features and Benefits
Moisture Removal
Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) Units dehumidify outdoor air before it enters a building's air delivery system. This ensures tightly controlled humidity, reduces the latent load, and improves overall energy efficiency. This function focuses on moisture removal, complementing temperature control systems.
Peerless Performance
Horizon DOAS Units with the WSHP option are designed to complement Trane Axiom™ Variable Speed Water-Source Heat Pumps, which feature highly efficient eFlex™ variable speed technology. An Axiom™ WSHP system with a ground loop installation can achieve up to 40 EER and deliver up to 60% energy savings.
Comfort Zone
Horizon DOAS Units are frequently paired with Axiom WSHP systems in multi-tenant buildings to provide fresh supply air for individual comfort system zones.
Broader Horizons: Integration and Application
The introduction of WSHP and ASHP options expands the Horizon series' capabilities, making it compatible with existing high-performance Trane heat pump technologies. This cost-effective renewable energy approach is ideal for new construction or upgrading existing systems.
- Renovations: Choose the heat pump option appropriate for integration with your facility's existing heat pump system.
- New Construction: Design a fully-integrated heat pump system from the ground up.
Personal Comfort Applications
Horizon Heat Pump Units are engineered to condition up to 100% outdoor air and can be fully integrated with building heat pump or terminal unit systems. They are well-suited for a wide range of building types, including:
- Schools
- Dormitories
- Hotels/Lodging
- Apartments
- Condominiums
- Assisted Living Facilities
- Nursing Homes
- Military Barracks
- Commercial Food Service
Performance Standards and Heat Pump Systems
Performance Standards
Removing water from the air is known as dehumidification. Integrated Seasonal Moisture Removal Efficiency (ISMRE) is a detailed part-load calculation assessing how well a dedicated outdoor air solution performs under various conditions. The AHRI 920 certification program includes a dehumidification standard for up to 100% outdoor air and an ISMRE rating. Horizon™ Outdoor Air Units are designed to meet this performance benchmark.
Heat Pump Systems
Air and Water Source Heat Pump systems are among the most sustainable and environmentally responsible methods for heating and cooling buildings. Water Source Heat Pumps utilize the building's water loop to manage condenser heat, maximizing system efficiencies and reducing operating costs. All Horizon Air and Water Source Heat Pump Units can be equipped with an Energy Recovery Ventilator option to further enhance unit efficiency and energy savings.
Installation Options
WSHP coil systems offer versatile technology with several installation applications:
- Boiler/cooling tower integration
- Ground loop (geothermal) systems
- Adjacent body of water (e.g., lake, river)

Unit Type Descriptions
Water-Source Heat Pumps (WSHP)
A grey, rectangular Water-Source Heat Pump unit designed for outdoor installation, showing duct connections and a robust casing. WSHP units are ideal solutions for academic, commercial, and institutional applications such as office buildings, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, condominiums, and apartments.
Air-Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
A grey, rectangular Air-Source Heat Pump unit, similar in design to the WSHP, with visible components and duct connections, often shown with an optional Energy Recovery Ventilator. ASHP units are well-suited for commercial applications and can be coupled with Energy Recovery Ventilation to maximize energy savings.
Installation and Service
Streamlined Installation
Trane® Horizon components are assembled, piped, wired, and tested at the factory. This facilitates a straightforward job site installation process, ensuring faster setup, increased reliability, and optimal performance.
Service Agreements
Planned maintenance through Trane service agreements helps maintain peak system efficiencies, conserve operating costs, and support budget goals.
Virtual Configurations
Trane provides Building Information Modeling (BIM) objects to support building design. Pre-populated physical and performance data for each product configuration saves time, increases accuracy, and simplifies the construction process.
