- Hold: Maintain a specific temperature for a set duration.
- Fan: Manually activate the fan for air circulation.
- Settings: Check battery status, network connectivity, and other device settings.
On-Screen Information: The display can show outdoor temperature (e.g., 74°F), indoor temperature (e.g., 72°F), and humidity levels (e.g., 45%).
Maximizing Your Nest Thermostat
Follow these tips for optimal performance and energy savings:
- Customizing Your Schedule: Easily set up a personalized heating and cooling schedule during initial setup or adjust it anytime via the Google Home app.
- Saving Energy When Away: The Nest Thermostat uses a built-in sensor to detect when no one is home, automatically adjusting the temperature to save energy. Your phone's location can also be used to expedite these adjustments.
- System Alerts and Reminders: Receive notifications for tasks like replacing air filters or alerts if the system detects potential furnace issues.
- The Nest Leaf: Look for the Nest Leaf icon ? on your display, which indicates when the thermostat is set to an energy-saving temperature.
Nest Ecosystem Integration
Nest products work seamlessly together and with other smart home devices:
- Voice Control: Control your thermostat using voice commands with Google Assistant or Alexa-enabled devices. For example, say "Hey Google, turn up the heat."
- Interoperability: If a Nest Protect detects carbon monoxide (CO), it can signal the Nest Thermostat to shut down the furnace, enhancing safety.
- Remote Control: Manage your thermostat from anywhere using the Google Home app, available on Google Play and the App Store.

NEST Setup and Initial Configuration
Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance. Consider these recommendations:
Initial Setup Checklist:
- Clear existing schedule and history.
- Turn off NEST Sense (Auto-Schedule) temporarily.
- Set ECO Min/Max temperatures to 1-2 degrees beyond your comfort range (default 40-90°F is extreme).
- Set up Wi-Fi connection.
- Download the Google Home app from the App Store or Google Play.
Note on ECO Mode: The default ECO range of 40-90°F is very wide. Adjusting it to be closer to your comfort settings (e.g., 1-2 degrees beyond) ensures that even if ECO mode activates unexpectedly, your home remains within a reasonable temperature range.
30-Day Monitoring Period
For the first 30 days, observe your home's temperature and comfort levels. Set a desired temperature and avoid manual adjustments to allow the thermostat to learn. Document morning, afternoon, and evening temperatures. After this period, evaluate whether the advanced features meet your needs.
Video Guides
Visual guides are available for various functions:
NEST Sense (Auto-Scheduling Learn)
NEST Sense learns your manual temperature adjustments to create a custom schedule. It's important to manage this feature, especially in a new home, as the initial learning period might reflect construction activity rather than occupancy patterns. Clearing the existing schedule and disabling Auto-Schedule initially is recommended.
Turning Off NEST Sense (Auto-Schedule):
- Via Nest App: Open the app, select your thermostat, go to Settings > Auto-Schedule, and toggle the switch off.
- Via Thermostat: Press the ring, navigate to Settings > Nest Sense > Auto-Schedule, and select 'Off'.
Clearing Your Existing Schedule
To reset your schedule:
- On your thermostat, go to Settings > Reset > Schedule.
- Select 'Reset' or 'Clear' depending on your model.
Home/Away Assist
This feature can be manually activated or set to automatically monitor occupancy using motion sensors and the mobile app. When active, it engages ECO mode, allowing the temperature to fluctuate within the defined ECO Min/Max range.
Conditioning Your Home
While energy conservation is important, consider the impact of temperature and humidity on your home's materials. Extreme conditions can cause swelling, cracking, or buckling. Maintain appropriate indoor climate levels, even when away, to preserve your home's integrity.
Troubleshooting: No Heat
If your Nest Thermostat is not heating, check the following:
- Thermostat Setting: Ensure the thermostat is set to 'HEAT' or 'HEAT * COOL'. A blue number indicates cooling mode.
- Schedule Conflicts: Check your schedule in Settings > Schedule. Remove or adjust any scheduled temperature events that might be turning off the heat.
- Furnace Power: Verify that the furnace has power. Check the circuit breaker at your electrical panel and ensure the furnace power switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Gas Furnaces: For gas furnaces, locate the red gas shut-off valve near the furnace. If the lever is perpendicular to the pipe, the gas is off. Ensure it is parallel to the pipe for gas flow.
- Electric Furnaces: A clogged condensate drain line (white pipe near the furnace) can cause the heat to shut off. Clear any obstructions and clean the line annually.
- Loose Connections: Ensure the thermostat face and the wires behind it are securely connected.
