Nest Thermostat E Installation Guide
This guide provides instructions for installing the Nest Thermostat E. Nest is committed to data privacy and security.
Compatibility
The Nest Thermostat E is compatible with most 24V systems, including forced air, variable speed, heat pump, and radiant systems. It supports common fuel types like natural gas, electricity, and oil. It can control:
- Heating and cooling: one stage of heating and cooling, and a second stage of either heating or cooling.
- Heat pumps: with auxiliary and emergency heat.
- Fans: one speed.
Check system compatibility at nest.com/works. Professional installation is recommended for dual fuel systems.

Installation Steps
- Switch off power: Turn off power to your HVAC system at the breaker box or system switch to prevent damage. Verify power is off by checking your current thermostat. [Power symbol]
- Remove the cover: Carefully remove the cover of your old thermostat. Some covers pop off, while others require unscrewing. If there's a second plate, remove it to expose the wires.
- Take a picture of the wires: Before disconnecting, take a clear picture of the existing wiring and terminal labels for reference. Ensure labels are readable. For detailed help with dual labels, visit nest.com/labels.
- Use the compatibility checker: Enter your thermostat's wire connector labels (not colors) into the compatibility checker at nest.com/works. Do not include jumper wires. You will receive a custom wiring diagram.
- Remove any jumper wires: Jumper wires are short wires connecting two terminals. The Nest Thermostat does not require them. Remove and save any jumper wires. Note: If you have both Rh and Rc wires, the Nest Thermostat E may not be compatible; consider the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat.
- Label the wires: Use the provided labels to mark each wire according to its terminal. If you have an Rc or Rh wire, use the 'R' label.
- Disconnect wires and remove base: After labeling, disconnect the wires. Gently wrap the wires around a pen or pencil to prevent them from falling back into the wall. Ensure power is off.
- Mark where screws will go: Use the built-in bubble level on the Nest base to ensure it is mounted level.
- Optional: Use the included trim plate: If needed to cover holes or marks from the old thermostat, snap the trim plate onto the Nest base and then attach it to the wall.
- If you have an electrical box: For installation with an electrical box, a steel mounting plate (sold separately at nest.com) is required. Secure the steel plate to the electrical box, then attach the Nest base and trim plate to the steel plate.
- Install the Nest base: Feed the wires through the center opening of the Nest base and secure the base to the wall using the provided screws.
- Connect wires: Following your custom wiring diagram from step 4, connect each wire to the corresponding terminal on the Nest base. Ensure wires are straight and securely inserted. Tug gently to confirm. Push wires down to be flush with the base. The exposed wire should be approximately 3/8 inch.
- Attach the display: Align the display with the base and push it on until it clicks into place.
- Switch the power back on: Restore power to your HVAC system at the breaker box or system switch. [Power symbol]
- Setup: The Nest Thermostat will power on and guide you through the setup process, including language selection, Wi-Fi connection, and system configuration for energy savings. The thermostat is controlled by turning and pressing the display, not via touchscreen.
- Control with the Nest app: Download the free Nest app from Google Play™ or the App Store™ to control your thermostat remotely and receive monthly Home Reports. Access via web at home.nest.com.
- Add your thermostat to your account: Follow the in-app instructions to add your thermostat to your Nest Account. For new users, tap the plus sign. For existing users, go to the Settings icon. For assistance, visit nest.com/pair.
