Monitor Audio Silver Series 7G
Owners Manual & Quick Start Guide
Spikes and Feet
Select finishes include a foam gasket on the out-rigger; ensure this side is placed on the cabinet.
For Wooden/Hard Floors (Silver 200, 300, 500 only)
The feet and 'out-riggers' are supplied assembled for use on non-carpeted, wooden/hard floors or where spikes are inappropriate. Attach them to the speaker base using the supplied bolts and hex keys.
To level the speaker, use a spirit level (not supplied). If slightly off-level, unscrew the foot at the lowest point and check again until the cabinet is fully level. Use the locking nuts on each foot to secure them and prevent vibrations.
For Carpeted Floors (Silver 200, 300, 500 only)
For carpeted floors, screw the spike into the foot and 'out-rigger' assembly. Attach them to the speaker base using the supplied bolts and hex keys.
Level the speaker using a spirit level. If slightly off-level, unscrew the foot at the lowest point and check again until the cabinet is fully level. Use the locking nuts on each foot to secure them and prevent vibrations.
[Warning] Please ensure there are no hidden wires under the carpet that could be damaged by the spikes.
Setting Up
2 Channel Positioning
For a 2-channel system, position the listening position and loudspeakers to form an equilateral triangle. Ideally, speakers should be approximately 6-10 feet (1.8-3m) apart and a minimum of 3 feet (91cm) from side walls. The ideal distance from the rear wall varies by speaker model:
- Silver 50: 6-12 inches (15-30cm)
- Silver 100 & 200: 8-14 inches (20-36cm)
- Silver 300 & Silver 500: 12-24 inches (30-61cm)
Note: These are recommended distances for optimal performance. Actual results depend on room size and construction. Experimentation is advised.
If bass is insufficient, move speakers closer to the rear wall. If bass is excessive, move them further away. Refer to the 'Port Bungs' section on page 6. If stereo imaging is lost, try 'toeing' the speakers in slightly so the sound appears to originate from between them.
AV Positioning
Position speakers according to your surround system requirements, referencing the 2-Channel Positioning section for wall distances. AV receiver crossover filter settings may allow closer wall placement. Experimentation is advised.
For bass-heavy sound or boom, move speakers further from the wall or use port bungs. With a subwoofer, adjust crossover settings or subwoofer position.
The Silver C250 centre channel speaker should be positioned at approximate ear height, pointing towards the viewing position.
For surround sound systems:
- Position side surround speakers (A) at approximately -90° to -110° and 90° to 110° relative to the listening position.
- Position rear surround speakers (B) at approximately -135° to -150° and 135° to 150° relative to the listening position.
A 7.1 system uses both A and B positions for a 360° soundstage. A 5.1 system can use position A for surrounds.
Setting up the Silver FX
The Silver FX offers Di-Pole or Bi-Pole modes. Bi-Pole mode has drivers and tweeters in phase. Di-Pole mode has one tweeter out of phase, creating a diffused sound. Wall mount FX speakers approximately 2 feet (0.6m) above ear height.
Di-Pole/Bi-Pole Switch: For 5.1 systems, set to Bi-Pole. For 7.1 systems with one pair of FX speakers, set to Bi-Pole. For 7.1 systems with two pairs of FX speakers (side and rear), set all to Di-Pole mode and swap left/right speakers for the sides, ensuring rear speakers are correctly handed.
[Warning] Ensure the amplifier is turned off before adjusting any switches to protect the amplifier.
Atmos
For overhead channels in an Atmos system, Monitor Audio recommends three-way in-ceiling speakers with a pivoting midrange/tweeter module for wider dispersion. More information is available on the Monitor Audio website.
Position 2 or 4 Atmos speakers in line with the front left and right speakers.
Silver AMS Dolby Atmos® Enabled Speakers
The Silver AMS speakers are a dedicated solution for Atmos installations. They can be placed directly on front or rear speakers in 2 or 4 speaker Atmos setups, or wall-mounted as surround or height speakers.
Fixing Silver FX & Silver AMS to a Wall
[Warning] Always check the wall structure before fixing. If unsure about secure fixing, consult a qualified tradesperson.
[Warning] Ensure no water pipes or electricity cables are behind the fixing point. Use secure steps and avoid trailing wires.
Note: Wall fixing screws and plugs are not supplied. Use fixings appropriate for your wall construction.
The Silver FX and Silver AMS have keyhole inserts. Use the enclosed wall fixing template for installation.
Wiring
Single Wiring
Use a single set of cables to the loudspeaker terminals. The internal crossover directs frequencies to the appropriate drivers. Connection can be made to the top, bottom, or diagonally placed terminals (experimentation is advised). Keep terminal links in place.
Bi-Wiring
Connect separate speaker cable pairs to the loudspeaker terminals from a single amplifier connection pair. Bottom terminals connect to bass drivers; top terminals connect to tweeters (2-way) or mid/tweeters (2.5/3-way). Terminal links MUST be removed.
Bi-Amping
Similar to bi-wiring, but uses a second amplifier. Connect one set of speaker cables to the top terminals from one amplifier, and another set to the bottom terminals from the second amplifier. Terminal links MUST be removed.
The Effects of Bi-Wiring and Bi-Amping
Bi-wiring/bi-amping separates frequency signals, reducing interaction between drivers and minimizing distortion. This results in a cleaner signal, improved clarity, detail, tighter bass, and better staging. It is highly recommended by Monitor Audio.
Port Bungs
[Warning] Do not insert port bungs too far into the port to avoid losing them inside the cabinet.
Use port bungs in small rooms (approx. 9 sqM / 80 sqFT) or rooms with accentuated bass response. Experiment with speaker positioning first. If positioning is fixed, or speakers are close to a wall (e.g., on a bookshelf), fit port bungs. For speakers with two ports (e.g., Silver 200), use only one port bung per speaker.
Port bungs reduce bass 'boom' (overhang) and improve bass clarity and agility by reducing bass energy around the port tuning frequency.
Experimentation is recommended in all circumstances.
Running-In Your Speakers
Run speakers in for 50-70 hours at low-mid listening levels. Performance may continue to improve beyond this.
Alternatively, place speakers face-to-face, drivers aligned and close. Connect one speaker in-phase (positive to positive, negative to negative) and the other out-of-phase (positive to negative, negative to positive) for continuous break-in.
Retention Bolt Adjustment
The Silver Series features a bolt-through driver fixing that reduces cabinet colouration and resonance. If a bolt becomes loose during transit or over time, use the supplied hex key to tighten it by a quarter turn after the strain is taken.
