STIHL BG-KM CombiSystem Blower Attachment
Original Operating Instructions
Introduction
This document is the operating manual for the STIHL BG-KM CombiSystem blower attachment. The STIHL CombiSystem allows for the combination of different CombiMotors and CombiTools to create a complete power unit. The functional unit of a CombiMotor and CombiTool is referred to as the power unit or machine in this manual. The operating instructions for the CombiMotor and the CombiTool together form the complete operating instructions for the power unit. Always read both operating instructions carefully before first use and keep them safe for future reference.
The manual is available in Dutch (Handleiding), French (Notice d'emploi), and German (Gebrauchsanleitung).
Image Description: The STIHL BG-KM is a blower attachment designed to be used with STIHL CombiMotors. It features a grey housing with the STIHL logo, a black nozzle at one end, and connects to a motor unit via a shaft and coupling mechanism.
Safety Instructions and Work Technique
Special safety measures are necessary when working with a power unit. Always read both operating instructions (CombiMotor and CombiTool) carefully before first use and keep them for future reference. Failure to observe the instructions can be life-threatening.
Only lend or allow persons familiar with this model and its operation to use the power unit, always providing them with the CombiMotor and CombiTool operating instructions. The blower is suitable for clearing leaves, grass, paper, snow, etc., in areas like parks, sports fields, parking lots, or driveways, and for clearing forest paths. It is forbidden to use the power unit for other purposes, as this poses a risk of accidents.
Only install parts or accessories approved by STIHL for this power unit or technically equivalent parts. Contact an authorized dealer if you have questions.
Only use high-quality parts or accessories. Otherwise, there is a risk of accidents or damage to the power unit. STIHL recommends using original STIHL parts and accessories, as their characteristics are optimally matched to the product and user requirements.
Do not make any modifications to the unit, as this could compromise safety. STIHL is not liable for personal injury or material damage caused by the use of unauthorized attachments.
Do not use a high-pressure cleaner for cleaning the unit; the strong water jet can damage parts.
Clothing and Equipment
Wear prescribed clothing and equipment. Clothing must be functional and allow for complete freedom of movement. Wear close-fitting clothing, e.g., a coverall, but not a work coat. Do not wear clothing, scarves, ties, or jewelry that could be drawn into the air intake. Tie back long hair (headscarf, cap, helmet, etc.). Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles.
⚠️ WARNING: To reduce the risk of eye injury, wear close-fitting safety goggles conforming to EN 166. Ensure the goggles fit properly. Wear personal hearing protection, e.g., earmuffs. STIHL offers a comprehensive range of personal protective equipment.
Transporting the Power Unit
Always switch off the engine. When transporting in a vehicle, secure the power unit against tipping over, damage, and fuel leakage.
Before Starting
Check that the power unit is in safe operating condition. Refer to the relevant chapter in the CombiMotor and CombiTool operating instructions:
- Wear on the blower housing (cracks, chips) can lead to injury from ejected foreign objects.
- If the blower housing is damaged, contact an authorized dealer. STIHL recommends contacting an STIHL dealer.
- Do not make any modifications to the controls or safety devices.
- Handles must be clean and dry, free of oil and dirt – essential for safe operation of the power unit.
The power unit must only be operated in technically sound condition – risk of accidents! In case of emergency when using a harness, practice quick release. Do not throw the unit on the ground during practice to avoid damage. See also the "Before Starting" instructions in the CombiMotor operating instructions.
During Work
Never blow in the direction of other persons or animals – the unit can throw small objects at high speed – risk of injury! In case of imminent danger or emergency, switch off the engine immediately – move the combi-slider / stop switch / stop button to STOP or 0. Keep a distance of at least 5 meters (16 ft) from other persons – risk of injury from thrown objects! Maintain this distance from vehicles, windows, etc., to avoid material damage!
The power unit produces toxic exhaust gases as soon as the engine is running. These gases can be odorless and invisible, containing unburned hydrocarbons and benzene. Never operate the unit in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, even with catalytic converters.
Never leave the unit running unattended. Be cautious on slippery surfaces, in rain, snow, ice, on slopes, or uneven terrain – risk of slipping! When blowing in open areas or gardens, be mindful of pets to avoid endangering them. Catalytic converter mufflers can become very hot. Dust stirred up during work can be harmful to health. Wear a dust mask if dust is generated. When using hearing protection, be extra careful and attentive, as warning sounds (shouts, signals, etc.) are less audible.
After work, place the unit on a level, non-flammable surface. Do not place it near easily flammable materials (e.g., wood chips, bark, dry grass, fuel) – fire hazard! If the unit has been subjected to abnormal stress (e.g., impact or fall), check its safe operating condition before restarting – see "Before Starting" instructions in the CombiMotor manual. Specifically check the proper functioning of safety devices. Never continue to use power units that are no longer safe to operate. If in doubt, contact an authorized dealer.
Using the Unit
Always hold the power unit firmly with both hands on the handles. Right hand on the control handle, left hand on the handle on the shaft – this applies to left-handers too. Firmly grip the handles with your thumbs.
⚠️ WARNING: Only operate the unit with the blower tube fully assembled – risk of injury!
Always move forward slowly – keep the blower tube outlet in view at all times – do not walk backward – risk of tripping! When blowing in open areas and gardens, pay attention to ground-dwelling wildlife. The unit can be carried on a strap (optional accessory, depending on country) that supports the machine's weight.
Work Technique
Minimizing Blowing Time
To minimize blowing time, use a rake or broom to loosen debris before blowing.
Recommended Work Technique for Minimizing Air Pollution:
- If necessary, moisten the surface to be blown to prevent excessive dust formation.
- Do not blow debris towards people, especially children, pets, open windows, or freshly washed cars. Blow debris carefully so it does not pose a risk to others.
- Collect swept debris in a waste container; do not blow it onto neighbors' property.
Recommended Work Technique for Minimizing Noise:
- Operate power units only during reasonable hours – avoid working early in the morning, late at night, or during siesta time when people might be disturbed. Observe local regulations specifying working hours for noisy equipment.
- Run blower engines at the lowest possible speed sufficient for the task.
- Before use, check the blower, especially the muffler, air intake, and air filter.
