Hinkley Kingston Lighting Fixture Installation Guide
Getting Started
SAFETY WARNING: READ WIRING AND GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS (I.S. 18) AND ANY ADDITIONAL DIRECTIONS. TURN POWER SUPPLY OFF DURING INSTALLATION. IF NEW WIRING IS REQUIRED, CONSULT A QUALIFIED ELECTRICIAN OR LOCAL AUTHORITIES FOR CODE REQUIREMENTS.
Initial Steps:
- Find a clear area to work.
- Unpack the fixture and glass from the carton.
- Carefully review all instructions prior to assembly.
Glass Installation
This section details how to install the glass panels into the fixture.
Diagrams (DRAWING 2 & 3) illustrate the glass installation process.
- To install the glass, remove the fixture top (part 3) by removing the knobs (part 4). Keep the knobs.
- Place the glass panels (part 2) into the fixture cage.
- Fold down the glass tabs (part 1) to secure the glass panels (part 2).
- Replace the fixture top (part 3) and knobs (part 4).
Mounting and Hanging
Follow these steps to securely mount and hang the fixture.
Mounting Strap and Tubing Assembly:
Drawing 1 illustrates the components for hanging the fixture, including the mounting strap, outlet box, threaded tubing, and loop.
- Shut off electrical current before starting. If the fixture is controlled by a wall switch, turn it off. Otherwise, remove the appropriate fuse or open circuit breakers until the fixture is dead. Do not restore power until the new fixture is completely wired and in place.
- Fasten the mounting strap (part 1) to the outlet box (A) using two 8-32 screws (part 2) (not provided).
- Thread two hex nuts (parts 3a and 3b) onto the threaded tubing (part 4).
- Thread one end of the threaded tubing (part 4) into the loop (part 5) for a minimum of 1/2" to 3/4". Tighten hex nut (3a) against the loop (5) to lock it in position.
- Thread the other end of the threaded tube (part 4) into the mounting strap approximately 1/2".
- Slip the canopy (B) over the loop (part 5). Adjust the loop's height so half of its threaded area is exposed.
- After adjusting the loop height, tighten hex nut (3b) against the mounting strap to lock the loop and threaded tube in position.
- Remove the mounting strap (part 1) from the junction box (A). Thread a third hex nut (3c) onto the end of the threaded tube (part 4) above the mounting strap. Tighten this nut against the mounting strap to lock the assembly.
- Reassemble the mounting strap onto the junction box.
Drawing 2 shows the canopy adjustment process, highlighting the exposed threaded area on the loop.
Chain Assembly:
- Determine the required chain length for hanging the fixture.
- Attach one end of the chain to the top loop of the fixture.
- Slip the loop screw collar (part 6) and canopy (B) onto the chain.
- Attach the other end of the chain to the loop (part 5). Assistance may be needed as the fixture can be heavy.
Wiring and Grounding
Ensure proper electrical connections for safe operation.
Wiring Instructions:
For Indoor Fixtures:
- Connect the positive supply wire (A) (typically black or smooth, unmarked wire) to the positive fixture lead (B) using an appropriately sized twist-on connector.
- Connect the negative supply wire (C) (typically white or ribbed, marked wire) to the negative fixture lead (D).
- Refer to the grounding instructions below to complete all electrical connections.
For Outdoor Fixtures:
- Connect the positive supply wire (A) (typically black or smooth, unmarked wire) to the positive fixture lead (B) using an appropriately sized twist-on connector.
- Connect the negative supply wire (C) (typically white or ribbed, marked wire) to the negative fixture lead (D).
- Cover the open end of connectors with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
- If installing a wall mount fixture, use caulk to seal gaps between the fixture mounting plate and the wall to prevent water entry. For lap siding, use caulk and a special mounting platform.
- Refer to the grounding instructions below to complete all electrical connections.
Grounding Instructions:
Diagrams 1, 2, and 3 illustrate grounding connections for Flush Mount, Chain Hung, and Post-Mount fixtures respectively.
Flush Mount Fixtures:
- For positive grounding in a 3-wire system, fasten the fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) to the fixture mounting strap (M) using the ground screw (S).
- Note: On straps for screw-supported fixtures, install the two mounting screws first. Any remaining tapped hole can be used for the ground screw.
Chain Hung Fixtures:
- Loop the fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) under the head of the ground screw (S) on the fixture mounting strap (M).
- Connect the loose end of the fixture ground wire directly to the building system's ground wire using appropriately sized twist-on connectors.
Post-Mount Fixtures:
- Connect the fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) to the power supply ground using an appropriately sized twist-on connector inside the post.
- Cover the open end of the connector with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
