HINKLEY Lighting Fixture Assembly and Wiring Instructions
Model Numbers: 81420, 81424
General Assembly Steps
Before you begin:
- Find a clear area to work.
- Unpack the fixture and glass from the carton.
- Carefully review all instructions before assembly.
Safety Warning:
Read all wiring and grounding instructions (I.S. 18) and any additional directions. Turn off the power supply during installation. If new wiring is required, consult a qualified electrician or local authorities for code requirements.
Mounting Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Mounting Strap
Thread the two long mounting screws (B) into the back of the mounting strap (A). Ensure the side of the mounting strap with the ground screw head is the front. Verify the screw holes match the spacing of holes (D) in the back plate (E).
Step 2: Attach Mounting Strap
Attach the mounting strap (A) to the junction box (J) using two screws (C) (not provided).
Step 3: Install Fixture
The fixture can now be installed.
Fixture Mounting:
- Slip the two mounting screws (B) through the two mounting holes (D) in the backplate (E).
- While holding the fixture in place, thread the ball knobs (F) onto the ends of the mounting screws (B) and tighten.
Electrical Connections (Refer to I.S. 18)
Make electrical connections from the supply wire to the fixture lead wires. Follow all instructions for necessary wiring connections.
Indoor Fixtures Wiring:
- Connect the positive supply wire (A) (typically black or smooth, unmarked side) to the positive fixture lead (B) using an appropriately sized twist-on connector.
- Connect the negative supply wire (C) (typically white or ribbed, marked side) to the negative fixture lead (D).
- Refer to grounding instructions to complete all electrical connections.
Outdoor Fixtures Wiring:
- Connect the positive supply wire (A) to the positive fixture lead (B) using an appropriately sized twist-on connector.
- Connect the negative supply wire (C) to the negative fixture lead (D).
- Cover the open end of connectors with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
- If installing a wall mount fixture, use caulk to seal gaps between the fixture mounting plate (backplate) and the wall to prevent water entry. If the wall surface is lap siding, use caulk and a fixture mounting platform.
- Refer to grounding instructions to complete all electrical connections.
Grounding Instructions (Refer to I.S. 18)
Flush Mount Fixtures:
For positive grounding in a 3-wire system, fasten the fixture ground wire (E) (typically copper or green plastic coated) to the fixture mounting strap (M) with the ground screw (S). If using straps for screw-supported fixtures, install mounting screws first. Any remaining tapped hole can be used for the ground screw.
Chain Hung Fixtures:
Loop the fixture ground wire (E) under the head of the ground screw (S) on the fixture mounting strap (M). Connect it directly to the building's ground wire using appropriately sized twist-on connectors.
Post-Mount Fixtures:
Connect the fixture ground wire (E) to the power supply ground with an appropriately sized twist-on connector inside the post. Cover the open end of the connector with silicone sealant to form a watertight seal.
Glass Shade Installation
- Place the glass shade (3) over the socket (1).
- Secure the glass shade (3) with the socket ring (2).
- Install an appropriate medium base bulb (4).
- The fixture can now be powered on.
Caulking Instructions (IS200)
After securing the fixture to the wall, it is recommended to seal the gap between the wall and the fixture backplate on the top and both sides with a good quality waterproof caulk or silicone sealant (not included).
It is also recommended to apply a small bead of caulk or sealant under the ball knobs used to mount the fixture.
