The Aprilaire Model 8920W is a Wi-Fi enabled thermostat designed to control your home's heating, cooling, and indoor air quality. It features a large touch screen, remote access via Wi-Fi, and advanced indoor air quality management.

Display Overview

The thermostat features a Home Screen and a Main Menu for navigation and control.

Home Screen Elements:

  • Thermostat Name: Displays the name of the thermostat (e.g., "Aprilaire FAMILY ROOM").
  • Current Date and Time: Shows the current time and date.
  • Room Temperature & Humidity: Displays current indoor temperature and relative humidity (RH).
  • Heating and Cooling Equipment Status: Indicates if heating or cooling is active.
  • Outdoor Temperature & Humidity: Displays current outdoor temperature and humidity (if sensor is installed).
  • Fan Mode Selection: Shows the current fan mode (e.g., AUTO).
  • System Mode Selection: Shows the current system mode (e.g., HEAT, COOL).
  • Hold Menu & Status: Indicates if a hold is active.
  • Away Mode & Status: Indicates if Away mode is active.
  • Heat Blast Mode & Status: Indicates if Heat Blast is active.
  • Humidity Control: Shows status of humidity control (Idle, On).
  • Air Cleaning: Shows status of air cleaning (On).
  • Fresh Air: Shows status of fresh air ventilation (On).
  • Alerts: A red badge indicates active alerts.
  • Weather: Access to weather information.
  • Help Button: Access to help information for the current screen.
  • Menu Button: Access to the Main Menu.

Main Menu:

Accessed by touching the 'Menu' button on the Home Screen. It provides access to all thermostat settings.

  • Clock And Date: Set time and date.
  • User Preferences: Adjust settings like temperature scale, Away mode, lockouts, and schedule settings.
  • Display Settings: Adjust screen brightness and screen saver.
  • Contractor Info: View installer information.
  • Schedule: Set and manage daily heating/cooling schedules.
  • Vacation Hold: Set a prolonged period of energy-saving temperature settings.
  • Clean Screen: Temporarily disable the touch screen for cleaning.
  • Wi-Fi Settings: Configure Wi-Fi connection and network settings.

Wi-Fi Setup & Remote Access

Connect your thermostat to your mobile device for remote control and monitoring.

Step 1: Download the App

Search for and install the "Aprilaire Wi-Fi Thermostat App" from the Google Play Store (Android) or the App Store (iOS).

Step 2: Create a New Aprilaire Account

  1. Open the Aprilaire app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap "New User".
  3. Fill out the registration form and tap "Create".
  4. A confirmation email will be sent. Click the link in the email to complete registration. Check your junk mail folder if the email is not received.

Step 3: Connect Your Wi-Fi Thermostat to Your Home Network

  1. Ensure your thermostat is in Wi-Fi setup mode (indicated by a strobing signal icon). This may take up to 30 seconds after power-up or reset. If not in setup mode, refer to page 35 to clear router settings.
  2. Open the Aprilaire app and select "Connect a new thermostat".
  3. Follow the on-screen directions for your operating system (Android or iOS).

Android Users:

A list of available thermostats will appear. Tap to select your thermostat.

iOS Users:

Follow the on-screen prompts, which will guide you to your device's Wi-Fi settings to select the thermostat's network (SSID, typically includes model number and MAC ID).

Once connected to the thermostat's network, return to the app.

  1. Tap "Next" to scan for your home network.
  2. Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list.
  3. Enter your home Wi-Fi network password and tap "Finish".
  4. Enter your Aprilaire account email address and password, then tap "Login".
  5. The "Add Thermostats" page will appear with the thermostat's MAC ID pre-filled. Enter a thermostat name (e.g., "Office"), location (e.g., "House"), Zip Code, and Time Zone.
  6. Tap "Done".

Congratulations! Your thermostat is now registered and accessible via your mobile device.

Thermostat Operation

Control your home's temperature and system modes.

Select System Mode

Touch the 'MODE' button on the Home Screen to access the Thermostat Mode screen.

  • Heat: Operates the heating system.
  • Cool: Operates the cooling system.
  • Em Heat (Emergency Heat): Operates the auxiliary heat system (for heat pump installations).
  • Off: Turns off heating and cooling systems.

Select your desired mode and touch 'Done' to save. Touch 'Back' to discard changes.

Change Temperature Setpoint

On the Home Screen, touch the ⬆️ or ⬇️ arrows to adjust the temperature setpoint. A "Set Temporary Hold" pop-up will appear. Touch 'Done' to save changes.

Select Fan Setting

Touch the 'FAN' button on the Home Screen to access the Fan Mode screen.

  • On: The fan operates continuously.
  • Automatic: The fan operates during equipment demand (heating/cooling).
  • Circulate: The fan operates at least 30 minutes per hour.

Select your desired mode and touch 'Done' to save.

Set Time and Date

The thermostat automatically retrieves time and date from the internet if connected. If not connected, manual adjustment is possible.

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Clock And Date'.
  2. Touch the current time to open the "Set Time" pop-up. Use the ⬆️/⬇️ arrows to adjust hours, minutes, and AM/PM. Touch 'Done'.
  3. Touch the current date to open the "Set Date" pop-up. Use the ◀️/▶️ arrows to adjust month, day, and year. Touch 'Done'.

Schedule and Holds

Manage your home's temperature schedule for comfort and energy savings.

Understanding Schedules

The daily schedule is divided into four events:

  • WAKE: Temperature when you wake up.
  • LEAVE: Temperature when you are away.
  • RETURN: Temperature when you return home.
  • SLEEP: Preferred temperature while sleeping.

The default schedule times and temperatures are provided below. The fan mode is set to AUTO for all events.

Changing Schedules

You can customize the start time, temperature setpoints, and fan mode for each event.

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Schedule'.
  2. On the "Set Schedule" screen, touch the event start time, temperature, or fan mode you wish to change.
  3. Use the pop-up menus and arrows (⬆️/⬇️/◀️/▶️) to adjust settings.
  4. Touch 'Done' to save changes.

Copying Schedules

Copy a day's schedule to other days:

  1. From the "Set Schedule" screen, touch "Copy this Day".
  2. Select the days you want to copy the schedule to.
  3. Touch 'Done'.
  4. Confirm by touching 'Yes' to copy or 'No' to cancel.

Schedule Holds

Temporarily override the schedule.

  • Temporary Hold: Adjust the temperature using ⬆️/⬇️ arrows. The hold lasts until the end of the current schedule event. Touch 'Done' to confirm. To cancel, touch 'HOLD' on the main screen, then 'Cancel Hold'.
  • Permanent Hold: Similar to Temporary Hold, but touch "Switch to Permanent Hold". The time adjustment is disabled. Touch 'Done' to confirm. To cancel, touch 'HOLD' on the main screen, then 'Cancel Hold'.
  • Vacation Hold: Suspend the schedule for extended periods. Set an end date, time, temperature, and fan mode. If a dehumidifier is installed, you can also set its level. Touch 'Done' to save. Touch 'Cancel Hold' to resume the normal schedule early.

Heat Blast® (if installed)

Touch 'HEAT BLAST' on the Home Screen to raise the room temperature by 3°F to 5°F for a single occurrence. Touch 'HEAT BLAST' again or use the temperature arrows to cancel.

Away (if installed)

Touch 'AWAY' on the Home Screen to activate pre-programmed Away settings for energy savings. Touch 'AWAY' again to deactivate.

Status

View the current operating status of your home's equipment.

  1. Touch 'STATUS' on the Home Screen to open the "Operating Status" screen.
  2. This screen shows whether Heating, Cooling, Humidifying, Dehumidifying, Fresh Air, and Fan are ON, OFF, or IDLE.
  3. Touch 'Back' to return to the Home Screen.

Alerts

Receive notifications for important system information.

  • Active Alerts: A red badge on the 'ALERTS' icon ? on the Home Screen indicates active alerts. Touch 'ALERTS' to view them.
  • Alert Settings: Touch 'Settings' from the Alerts screen to configure RH Limits and Temperature Limits. You can enable/disable alerts and adjust their thresholds using the ⬆️/⬇️ arrows. Touch 'Done' to save.
  • Maintenance Reminders: If your equipment requires service, a reminder will appear. From the Alerts screen, touch 'Settings', then select the relevant equipment (e.g., Humidifier). You can choose to "Remind Later" or "Reset" the reminder if service has been performed. Touch 'Yes' to confirm a reset.

Weather

View current weather, forecasts, and pollen information.

  1. Touch 'WEATHER' on the Home Screen to open the Weather screen.
  2. Touch 'Settings' to open the "Weather Settings" screen.
  3. Enter your local postal code and touch 'Done'.

Pollen information is displayed only when available.

Indoor Air Quality Functions

Manage your home's humidity, air cleaning, and fresh air intake.

Humidity Control

This thermostat can control an installed humidifier and/or dehumidifier.

  • Automatic Mode: The thermostat automatically adjusts humidity based on outdoor temperature for optimal comfort and protection. Set the initial humidity level (e.g., setting 3) and allow 24-48 hours for adjustment.
  • Manual Mode: Manually set the desired RH level. Use the table provided to determine appropriate RH based on outdoor temperature to prevent condensation. Adjust using ⬆️/⬇️ arrows and touch 'Done'.
  • Dehumidification: Set the desired RH level for dehumidification. Use the ⬆️/⬇️ arrows to increase or decrease humidity. If using the air conditioner for dehumidification, it may cool up to 3°F beyond the setpoint. Energy saving tips are provided for optimal use.

Event-Based™ Air Cleaning

Activate the air cleaner fan for specific needs.

  • Touch 'Air Cleaning' on the Home Screen to access the "Air Cleaner Control" screen.
  • Temporary Events:
    • Event Clean (3 Hour): Runs for 3 hours, then returns to the permanent mode. Useful for short periods like vacuuming.
    • Allergies (24 Hour): Runs for 24 hours, then returns to the permanent mode. Useful during high pollen seasons.
  • Permanent Modes:
    • Off: Air cleaner does not run for cleaning purposes.
    • Automatic: Runs a minimum of 30 minutes per hour, monitoring system run time.
    • Constant Clean: Runs 24/7 for maximum air cleaning.

Fresh Air

Control ventilation for fresh air intake.

  • Touch 'Fresh Air' on the Home Screen to access the "Fresh Air Control" screen.
  • Temporary Events:
    • 3 hour Event: Ventilation runs for 3 hours, then returns to the permanent mode.
    • 24 hour Event: Ventilation runs for 24 hours, then returns to the permanent mode.
  • Permanent Modes:
    • Off: Disables ventilation.
    • Automatic: Ventilation cycles based on installer-calculated requirements.

User Preferences

Customize thermostat settings to suit your needs.

  • Touch 'Menu' , then 'User Preferences'.

Away Button Settings

Adjust the Heat, Cool, and Fan settings that will be used when 'AWAY' mode is activated.

  1. Touch 'Away Button' to open "Away Settings".
  2. Use the ⬆️/⬇️ arrows to adjust the desired Heat and Cool setpoints.
  3. Touch 'FAN' to select the fan mode for Away.
  4. Touch 'Done' to save changes.

Lockouts

Prevent changes to the thermostat from the Home Screen.

  1. Touch 'Lockouts' to open the "Lockouts" screen.
  2. Select 'Full' to enable lockout, or 'None' to disable it.
  3. Touch 'Done' to save.

To temporarily override full lockout, hold 'Menu' for 10 seconds.

Temperature Scale

Switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius.

  1. Touch 'Temperature Scale' to open the "Temperature Scale" screen.
  2. Select 'Fahrenheit' or 'Celsius'.
  3. Touch 'Done' to save.

Schedule Settings

Enable or disable the thermostat's schedule.

  1. Touch 'Schedule Settings' to open the "Schedule Settings" screen.
  2. Select 'Off' to disable the schedule (thermostat maintains current setpoints). Select 'On' to re-enable the schedule.
  3. Touch 'Done' to save.

Clean Screen

Temporarily disable the touch screen for cleaning.

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Clean Screen'.
  2. The screen will be disabled for 30 seconds. It will automatically return to the Menu screen when the timer finishes. Use a damp cloth with water or glass cleaner. Do not spray liquids directly on the screen.

Wi-Fi Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Manage and troubleshoot your thermostat's Wi-Fi connection.

Wi-Fi Status Indicator

The status indicator icons provide information about the Wi-Fi connection:

  • Connected, operating normally: One to four bars ?.
  • Internet connection lost: Connected to router, but no internet access.
  • Wi-Fi connection lost: Not connected to the Wi-Fi access point/router.
  • Strobing icon: Thermostat not configured for Wi-Fi or settings cleared.

Clearing Router Settings

If you change your Wi-Fi router or security settings, clear the thermostat's settings:

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Wi-Fi Settings'.
  2. Touch "Wi-Fi Disconnect & Clear Settings".
  3. Touch 'Yes' to confirm. This will not remove the thermostat from your User Account.

Refer to pages 4-6 for instructions on connecting to a new Wi-Fi network.

Removing the Thermostat from a User Account

Unregister the thermostat if it's no longer associated with an active account.

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Wi-Fi Settings'.
  2. Touch 'Advanced'.
  3. Touch 'Unregister'. Your Wi-Fi settings will remain unchanged.

Disabling the Wi-Fi Radio

Manually disable the Wi-Fi radio while keeping other network settings.

  1. Touch 'Menu' , then 'Wi-Fi Settings'.
  2. Touch 'Advanced'.
  3. Touch 'Off' to disable the Wi-Fi radio. Touch 'On' to re-enable it.

Limited Warranty

Your Aprilaire thermostat is warranted for five (5) years from the date of installation against defects in materials or workmanship. Research Products Corporation will supply a replacement for any defective thermostat returned within the warranty period. This warranty does not cover labor costs or defects caused by the installer. Implied warranties are limited to five years. This warranty is void if installation is not performed by a qualified HVAC contractor. Specific legal rights may vary by state.

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to two conditions: (1) it may not cause harmful interference, and (2) it must accept any interference received. Changes or modifications not expressly approved could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation.

RF Radiation Exposure: To comply with FCC/IC RF exposure limits, the antenna must be installed at least 20 cm from all persons and not co-located or operating with any other antenna or transmitter.
