Behringer LM DRUM User Manual
The Behringer LM DRUM is a classic hybrid sampling drum machine, building upon the iconic sounds of 1980s machines while offering a more versatile programming environment. Adapted from the RD-8 and RD-9, it allows users to sample sounds and create custom banks. It features up-to-date MIDI and USB connectivity, individual voice outputs, and can be integrated with electronic drum kits or pads for performance with full velocity sensitivity. This manual guides users through customizing the LM DRUM and maximizing its capabilities.
Safety Instructions
General Safety Precautions:
- Read and keep all instructions. Heed all warnings and follow all instructions.
- Do not use near water. Clean only with a dry cloth.
- Do not block ventilation openings or install in confined spaces. Install according to manufacturer's instructions.
- Avoid heat sources (radiators, stoves) and open flames.
- Do not defeat safety features of plugs (polarized or grounded). Consult an electrician if the plug does not fit your outlet.
- Protect the power cord from damage.
- Use only manufacturer-recommended accessories.
- Use caution when moving equipment on carts to avoid tip-overs.
- Unplug during storms or if not in use for extended periods.
- Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
- Warning: To prevent hearing damage, do not listen at high volume levels for long periods. Ensure you can still hear your own voice when speaking normally while using headphones.
- Caution: Risk of electric shock. Do not open the enclosure. Terminals marked with a lightning bolt symbol carry sufficient current to pose a shock hazard. Uninsulated dangerous voltage may be present inside.
Top Panel Overview
The top panel features controls for:
- Tempo Section: Controls for Tempo, Rate, Tap, Swing, Probability, Flam, Note Repeat, Polymeter, and Filter.
- Edit Section: Buttons for Save, Copy, Erase, and Dump operations.
- Mode Section: Buttons to select Song, Pattern, Step, and Pads modes.
- Program & Playback Section: Controls for Length, Sample, Bank, Quantize, Mute, Solo, Play/Pause, Record, Stop, and navigation buttons.
- Menu Section: Access to various sub-menus like Step Size, Probability, Flam, Note Repeat, Polymeter, Filter, Preferences, MIDI Map, Trigger Assign, Bitcrusher, Metronome, Options, and About.
- Controls: Includes Wave Designer (Attack, Sustain, Send, Sig LED), Analog Filter (Cutoff, HPF, On, Resonance), Volume, Master, Pan Controls, Voice Select, and Mixer controls.
Navigation and Controls
Navigation through menus and settings is primarily done using the data control and surrounding buttons (31-38). The data control (34) is used for adjusting values, while buttons 35-38 and 36-37 are used for scrolling and selecting options. The 'Yes' button (33) confirms selections or enters sub-menus, while the 'No' button (31) cancels or goes back.
Programming
Programming involves selecting a song, then a pattern, and then setting parameters like pattern length, probability, and swing. Users can program in Step Time or Real Time.
- Step Time Programming: Steps are programmed sequentially. Users select a drum and then press step buttons to place the sound. Variations in samples (e.g., two variations for snare) can be accessed by pressing the step button multiple times.
- Real Time Programming: Allows programming via step/pad buttons, MIDI keyboard, or electronic drum pads. Sounds are recorded with velocity as played. Quantization is recommended for tighter timing.
- Chromatic Programming: Allows playing and recording sounds chromatically via MIDI keyboard or by using the step/pad buttons as a keyboard.
Sampling
The LM DRUM allows users to create and use their own samples. Samples can be recorded directly into the LM DRUM via the Record Input (57) or loaded via the SynthTribe app.
- Direct Sampling: Connect an audio source to the Record Input. Adjust input gain using the Input control (48). Press 'Yes' to arm the recorder, then Tap+Yes to start recording. Samples can be trimmed and assigned to pads.
- Using SynthTribe: .wav files (under 1MB) can be loaded into SynthTribe, converted to mono, and downloaded to the LM DRUM. SynthTribe also functions as a librarian for managing samples.
Sample Management
The sample menu allows management of stored samples. Default samples in banks 1-7 are locked. Unrequired samples can be removed. Samples can be selected, loaded to banks, deleted, trimmed, or renamed.
Key Features
- Wave Designer: Alters transients of selected drums.
- Analog Filter: A dual-mode filter (low-pass/high-pass) that shapes the timbre of sounds.
- Bitcrusher: Reduces bit rate for a grainy, distorted sound.
- Metronome: Adjustable metronome for timing.
- MIDI & USB Connectivity: For controlling external devices and connecting to computers.
- Trigger Outs: For connecting external analog triggers.
- Sync In/Out: For synchronizing with external analog gear.
Rear Panel
The rear panel includes Main Outputs, Headphone Output, Rec Input, Voice Outs, Trigger Outs, Sync In, Sync Out, MIDI In/Out/Thru, USB, and Power Socket.
