Behringer LM DRUM

Classic Hybrid Sampling Drum Machine

Introduction

The Behringer LM DRUM is not just a recreation of the first sample based drum machine from the 1980s. On top of its iconic sounds the LM DRUM adds a more versatile programming environment, adapted from the RD-8 and RD-9; and the option to sample sounds and create banks of your own to use as you wish. It comes with up to date MIDI and USB connectivity, outputs for every voice, and can be linked to an electronic drumkit or pads and played as an instrument, with full velocity sensitivity. This manual is designed to help you customize your LM DRUM to your own requirements, and to help you get the best out of it. It is arranged in the same way as the Quick Start Guide that came in the box, but is able to go into much more depth.

Some sounds are variations on the same sample (e.g., snare, toms, congas). Changes to a single sample (like tuning) affect all its variations.

Wave Designer

Identical to RD-8/RD-9. Alters drum transients via Attack (40) and Sustain (43) controls. Affects main outputs only. Processed sounds are also fed to the Analog Filter.

  • ATTACK (40): Sets attack time. Adjusts punchiness or immediacy. 12 o'clock is neutral.
  • SEND (41): Button to send selected voices (using 53) to Wave Designer and Filter. Flashing indicates selection mode, solid lit indicates processing active.
  • SIG (42): LED indicates signal presence at the Wave Designer input.
  • SUSTAIN (43): Sets sustain level. Lengthens peak or acts as compressor. 12 o'clock is neutral. High levels may introduce noise.

Analog Filter

Allows timbre alteration similar to analog synthesizers. Processes sounds selected by the Wave Designer.

  • CUTOFF (44): Sets filter cutoff frequency (0-255). Counter-clockwise reduces highs (low pass), clockwise increases. Reversed in high pass mode. Controllable via MIDI CC #74.
  • HPF (45): Button to switch between Low Pass (unlit) and High Pass (lit) filter modes.
  • ON (46): Button to switch the filter on (lit) for selected voice(s).
  • RESONANCE (47): Sets resonance level, emphasizing frequencies around cutoff. Does not self-oscillate.

Volume & Master Controls

  • INPUT (48): Sets input gain for recording user samples (line level optimized, dynamic mics possible, no phantom power).
  • REC (49): LED indicates recording status.
  • MASTER (50): Sets volume for master outputs and headphone output.
  • TUNE CONTROLS (51): Tune snares, toms, congas; set hi-hat decay. Controllable via MIDI CC (75-90).
  • PAN CONTROLS (52): Set pan positions for drums and metronome on master outputs (hard right at lowest position, hard left at top).
  • VOICE SELECT (53): Select voices for programming, muting, soloing, wave designer, filter. Lights up with drum pads during programming/playback.
  • MIXER (54): Sets level for drums and metronome on master outputs (does not affect individual voice outputs). Click fader also sets monitor level during sample recording.

Programming

Programming follows a hierarchy: Song (15) > Pattern (16). Set pattern length and menu settings (e.g., probability) before deciding on step time or real time programming.

Step Time Programming

Playhead Running: Select song/pattern, set length, enable Autoscroll. Press RECORD then PLAY. Select voice (53), then press Step buttons (39) for desired steps. Double/triple press for sample variations. Further presses delete. Save work regularly.

Playhead Stopped: Select song/pattern, set length, disable Autoscroll. Press RECORD. Navigate blocks using << (23) and >> (26). Program steps as above.

SynthTribe: Use the app's step sequencer for programming, visualization, and parameter setting. Patterns can be uploaded/downloaded.

Real Time Programming

Use Step/Pad buttons (39), a MIDI keyboard, or electronic drum pads. Select song/pattern, set length, enable Autoscroll (recommended). Ensure Click volume is up on Mixer (54) if using metronome. Use voice pads or external MIDI source. Record with velocity sensitivity. Quantization is recommended unless a loose feel is desired.

Chromatic Programming and Playing

On LM DRUM: Hold TAP (10), press PADS (18) to light up keyboard. Select voice (53), play/record chromatically. Use TAP + navigation buttons (35/38) to change octave. Press TAP + PADS again to exit.

Via External MIDI Keyboard: Enable 'Chromatic MIDI In' in Options sub-menu. Voices respond to specific MIDI channels (Bass Drum: 1, Snare Drum: 2, etc., up to Claps: 16). Rx channels can be changed in MIDI Map or SynthTribe. Pitch can be edited in Step mode.

Micro Timing

In Step mode, hold a step/pad button for the desired step. Use left navigation button to move step ahead of beat, right to move behind.

Creating a Song

After programming patterns, press PATTERN (16), then RECORD (27). Select End Mode (Stop, Loop, Hold) using navigation buttons (36/38). Use step/pad buttons (39) to place patterns (1-16) into song slots (1-8). Press PATTERN + >> or << to advance/go back through slots. Set pattern repeats (1-255 or infinite) using RATE (9) or Data Control (34). Press RECORD to exit. Save song using SAVE (11). To play song, hold TAP (10) and press PLAY (29) until 'Play Song' is displayed.

Chaining Patterns

Press PATTERN (16), select a pattern, press PLAY (29). Patterns play sequentially. Select a new pattern while one is playing; its button flashes until the current one finishes, then playback switches.

Chaining Songs

Press SONG (15), select first song, press PLAY (29). Select next song while playing; its button flashes. Playback switches after current song finishes.

Setlist

Allows chaining songs in order, with repeats. Select SONG (15), press RECORD (27). Set End Mode (Stop, Loop, Hold). Allocate songs (1-8) to 16 slots using step/pad buttons (39). Set song repeats (1-255) using RATE (9) or Data Control (34). No infinite repeat option for songs. Setlist saves automatically.

Sampling

Create and use custom samples alongside defaults.

Direct Sampling

Select bank (21). Connect audio source to REC INPUT (57). Press SAMPLE (20). Adjust Input Level (48) and Threshold. Press YES to arm, TAP + YES to record. Recording time shown. Press YES to end. Trim start/end points. Save sample (RECxxxx default name, or rename). Assign sample to a pad (39) or skip. User samples can be allocated later via bank sub-menu 'REPLACE' function.

Using SynthTribe

.wav files (under 1MB) can be loaded into SynthTribe and downloaded to LM DRUM. SynthTribe converts stereo to mono and sets sample rate to 24 kHz (LM DRUM native: 12-bit, 24 kHz mono). Files download to first empty slot(s) of selected bank. SynthTribe includes a Librarian function for backup/restore. Total user sample storage: 14.17 MB (approx. 310 seconds).

Sample Management

Hold TAP (10) + SAMPLE (20) to open sample menu. Default samples (Banks 1-7) are locked. Unrequired samples can be deleted here. Options include: SELECT ALL, DESELECT ALL, LOAD TO BANK, DELETE, TRIM, RENAME. Multiple samples can be selected for batch operations.
