Controls and Connections

Description of device controls:

Description of the Easy to Read Display:

The display shows detected signal bands (X, K, Ka) and signal strength (1=weakest, 5=strongest). For Laser, 'L' is displayed. For VG-2, 'V' is displayed.

Installation

Where to Mount Your Detector

Mount the detector in the center of the vehicle, as low as possible on the front windshield without obstructing the view. Alternatively, mount on the dashboard using the included hook-and-loop fastener. Ensure the detector's lens and LaserEye have a clear view. Objects that can block or weaken signals include windshield wiper blades, mirrored sunscreens, dark tinting, and heated windshields (e.g., Instaclear for Ford, Electriclear for GM).

Windshield Mounting

  1. Ensure rubber cups and windshield are clean.
  2. Push the bracket firmly onto the windshield.
  3. Attach the detector to the bracket, ensuring it is parallel to the road's surface.
  4. Gently bend the bracket to adjust the angle if necessary. Do not use the detector to bend the bracket.
  5. Plug the power cord into the detector.
  6. Plug the cigarette lighter adapter into your vehicle's cigarette lighter.

Dashboard Mounting

  1. Place the detector on the dashboard to find a location with a clear, level view of the road, parallel to the road's surface. The angle cannot be adjusted after mounting.
  2. Remove the paper backing from one side of the hook-and-loop fastener.
  3. Attach the pad to the dashboard at your chosen location and remove the other paper backing.
  4. Attach the detector to the hook-and-loop fastener. The unit can be removed and reattached as needed.
  5. Plug the power cord into the detector.
  6. Plug the cigarette lighter adapter on the power cord into your vehicle's cigarette lighter.

Basic Operation

Powering On the Device, Adjusting Volume

To turn on the unit and adjust audio volume, rotate the On-Off/ Volume control clockwise (away from you). Note: Some vehicles supply power to the cigarette lighter even when the ignition is off. Turn off or unplug the detector when parking for lengthy periods in such cases.

Sensitivity Modes

City Mode: Delays X band audio alerts at lower signal strength levels, reducing false alerts in urban areas from sources like microwave towers and automatic door openers. A single beep sounds when the signal is first detected.

Highway Mode: The factory setting, providing maximum sensitivity.

To change sensitivity mode, press the SEN button. Display examples:

Anti-Falsing Circuitry

The RAD 380 is designed to provide accurate alerts and minimize distractions from erroneous signals. Features include:

Mute

Press the MUTE button momentarily to turn off an audio alert. Pressing it a second time during an alert turns the audio back on.

Auto Mute

Auto Mute automatically reduces the audio volume of alerts after four seconds of signal detection. The factory setting is On.

Display Brightness

Cycle through three brightness settings by repeatedly pushing the DIM button. The factory setting is Bright.

VG-2 Alert Settings

The detector can identify signals from VG-2 Radar Detector Detectors (RDDs) and alert you when they are in use. The detector is invisible to VG-2 RDDs.

Radar Alert Settings

Configure alerts for X, K, and Ka Bands. Factory settings are X, K, and Ka On.

Detection

Audio Alerts

Distinct alert tones are used for each signal type. For X, K, and Ka band radar signals, tones repeat faster as you approach the source, providing information about signal proximity.

Visual Display

The display shows the detected signal type and strength (1=weakest, 5=strongest) for X, K, and Ka alerts.

Signals and Visual Displays

Type of Signal Visual Display
X Band Radar X is Steady
K Band Radar K is Steady
Ka Band Radar Ka is Steady
Laser L is Steady
VG-2 RDD V is Steady

Instant-On Detection

The detector is designed to detect Instant-On speed monitoring signals, which appear suddenly at full strength. Take appropriate action immediately when an Instant-On alert is given.

Responding to Alerts

Description Interpretation Recommended Response
Tone repeats slowly at first, then speeds up rapidly Probably police radar FULL ALERT
Tone sounds one time only Probably a false alarm, but possibly pulsed radar or VG-2 nearby. Exercise caution
Tone instantly begins repeating rapidly. Radar or VG-2 nearby has been activated suddenly. FULL ALERT
Tone repeats slowly as you approach a hill or bridge, then speeds up sharply as you reach it. Probably police radar beyond the hill or bridge. FULL ALERT
Tone repeats slowly for a short period. Probably a false alarm. Exercise caution
Any type of laser alert. Laser alerts are never false alarms. FULL ALERT

Understanding Radar and Laser

Radar Speed Monitoring Systems

Three band frequencies are approved by the FCC for speed monitoring radar equipment:

VG-2

VG-2 is a Radar Detector Detector (RDD) that detects low-level signals from radar detectors. Your detector does not emit signals detectable by VG-2 but can detect VG-2 signals and alert you when a VG-2 device is in use near your vehicle. To turn VG-2 alerts on/off, press and hold the Dim button for four seconds while no signal is detected. The factory setting for VG-2 alerts is Off.

LIDAR (LASER)

LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) operates similarly to radar but requires a clear line of sight to the target vehicle. Obstructions like signposts, utility poles, and tree branches can prevent valid speed measurement.

Common questions about LIDAR:

Maintenance

The detector is designed for years of trouble-free performance with no routine maintenance required. If the unit does not appear to be operating properly, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Specifications

Bands and Frequencies

Band Frequencies
X Band 10.525 ± 0.050 GHz
K Band 24.125 ± 0.125 GHz
Ka Band 34.700 ± 1.300 GHz
VG-2 11.500 ± 0.250 GHz
Laser 910 ± 50 nm, 100 PPS
