Sangean MMR-88 Emergency Weather Radio

This document provides operating instructions and safety information for the Sangean MMR-88 Emergency Weather Radio.

Key Features and Controls

The MMR-88 is powered by a supplied 850mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It features multiple charging methods including USB, dynamo hand crank, and solar power.

Charging the Radio

Charging via DC IN (USB-C):

  • Connect the USB-C end of the supplied cable to the radio's USB-C socket.
  • Connect the other end to a USB-A power source (PC, charger, power bank).
  • Charging time is approximately 2 hours for a full charge.
  • A full charge provides approximately 10 hours of playback.
  • A charging animation and indicator light will appear when charging.

Charging via Dynamo Power:

  • Ensure the telescopic antenna is in the rest position.
  • Rotate the dynamo handle at approximately 120 rotations per minute.
  • One minute of dynamo charging provides approximately 5-7 minutes of listening time (AM band, moderate volume).

Charging via Solar Power:

  • Position the radio so the solar panel receives direct sunlight.
  • Adjust position for maximum brightness of the CHARGE indicator LED.
  • It takes approximately 15 hours to fully charge the battery under direct sunlight.
  • The solar panel is a supplementary energy source.
  • Do not attempt to charge using sun-lamps, as this can cause irreversible damage.

Setting the Clock

The clock can be set with the radio on or off.

  1. Press and hold the BAND / TIME SET button until the hour setting blinks.
  2. Use Tuning UP/Down to select the hour.
  3. Press BAND / TIME SET again to set the minutes.
  4. Use Tuning UP/Down to select the minutes.
  5. Press BAND / TIME SET again to complete.

Radio Operation

Turning On/Off:

  • Press and hold the Power button for approximately 0.5 seconds to turn on/off.
  • When turned on, a 90-minute auto shut-off icon may appear. To disable, hold the power button longer until the icon disappears.
  • When turned off, the clock time is displayed.

Tuning the Radio:

  • Seek Tuning: Press and hold Tuning UP/Down for 0.5 seconds to seek the next active station.
  • Manual Tuning: Press Tuning UP/Down repeatedly to find the desired frequency.
  • Preset Stations: Tune to a station, press and hold PRESET (approx. 2 seconds) until 'M' blinks, select memory position using Tuning UP/Down, press PRESET again to save. The radio supports 19 preset memories for AM/FM.
  • Recall Stations: Press PRESET to enter preset mode, use Tuning UP/Down to select a saved station, press PRESET again to exit.

Antenna:

  • Extend and rotate the telescopic antenna for FM and Weather Band reception.
  • Use the built-in ferrite rod antenna for AM reception; reposition the radio for best AM signal.

Volume Control:

  • Use the Volume Control (+/-) buttons to adjust the sound level.

Changing AM/FM Tuning Step:

  • With the radio OFF, press and hold PRESET (approx. 2 seconds).
  • The display will show the software version, then blink the FM tuning step (100 kHz). Use Tuning UP/DOWN to cycle between 100 and 50 kHz. Press PRESET to confirm.
  • The display will then blink the AM tuning step (10 kHz). Use Tuning UP/DOWN to cycle between 10 and 9 kHz. Press PRESET to confirm.
  • Note: Changing the AM tuning step will erase preset AM stations.

Weather Band and Weather Alert

Listening to Weather Band:

  • Press BAND to cycle through AM/FM/WX.
  • In WX mode, use Tuning UP/Down to select a weather channel.

Programming Weather Alert:

  • Turn the radio on and tune to the strongest weather channel.

Activating Weather Alert:

  • Press and hold WX ALERT button until 'WX ALERT' appears on the display.
  • When an alert is broadcast, the siren will activate for 15 seconds, followed by the selected weather channel. The WX ALERT indicator and LED flashlight will blink during the siren.
  • Press any button (except Flashlight) to stop the siren and resume the weather broadcast.
  • The WX ALERT LED will continue blinking for about an hour until acknowledged by pressing any button (except Flashlight).
  • To cancel Weather Alert, press and hold WX ALERT until 'OFF' is displayed.

Emergency Siren and LED Flashlight

Emergency Siren:

  • Press and hold the Emergency Siren button for 1 second to activate.
  • Press again for 1 second or press the Power button to turn off.

LED Flashlight:

  • Press the Flashlight button to cycle through modes: High, Low, Blinking, SOS, Off.
  • Press and hold the Flashlight button at any time to turn it off.

Listening with Headphones

Plug headphones into the 3.5mm headphone socket for private listening. This disconnects the external speaker.

Charging USB Devices

The radio can charge low-voltage USB devices via the USB-A socket.

  • This function is disabled by default to conserve battery.
  • To enable: Ensure the radio is OFF, press the PRESET button. The display will show 'On' and the WX ALERT indicator will flash.
  • Connect your USB device.
  • To disable: Press PRESET again. The display will show 'OFF'.
  • The charging function will automatically deactivate if the battery is low or if the radio is turned on.
  • The USB-A socket provides a maximum current of 0.3A.

Strap Holder and Water Resistance

  • Attach the supplied carrying strap to the holder for easy transport.
  • The radio is water-resistant, not waterproof. Ensure the rubber cover for ports is securely closed when not in use.
