WARNING

This product must be installed and serviced by a qualified installer or service agency. Improper installation, adjustment, alteration, service or maintenance can cause injury or property damage.

HOW YOUR SYSTEM WORKS

COOLING CYCLE

During the cooling cycle, your system removes heat and humidity from your home and transfers this heat to the outdoor air. This process is similar to how evaporation cools your skin; it requires heat, which is drawn from the air inside your home.

HEATING CYCLE (HEAT PUMPS)

During the heating cycle, your system removes heat and humidity from the outdoor air and transfers it to your home. Even at 0°F, outdoor air contains significant heat. Heat pumps transfer existing heat rather than generating it.

System Operation

Your thermostat controls the comfort level. Avoid rapidly switching the thermostat ON/OFF or between HEAT and COOL, as this can damage the equipment. Always allow at least 5 minutes between changes.

SETTING THE THERMOSTAT

CAUTION

The main power to the system must remain ON at all times to prevent damage to the outdoor unit compressor. If necessary, use the thermostat control switch to turn the system OFF. If the main power is disconnected for 8 hours or longer, do not attempt to start the system for 8 hours after power is restored. Use emergency heat if needed during this period.

THERMOSTATS

YOUR KEY TO COMFORT

Thermostats control your system's operation. They typically feature a temperature indicator, a temperature selection mechanism (dial, arm, button), a fan switch, and a comfort switch for system mode (Cool, Heat, Off).

Only approved thermostats are fully compatible. Avoid thermostats that use batteries or power-stealing principles, as they may not be supported reliably.

Systems can be cooling-only or cooling and heating (heat pump). Thermostats vary from manual change-over types to programmable electronic types.

Manual Change-Over: Requires manual switching between cooling and heating modes.

Programmable Electronic Thermostats: Offer advanced features like temperature set-backs for energy savings and often include a digital clock.

COOLING ONLY

For cooling-only systems, a simple thermostat with a COOL and OFF comfort switch is sufficient.

COOLING AND HEATING (HEAT PUMP)

For systems with both cooling and heating, you may use a manual change-over thermostat or a programmable electronic thermostat with multiple stages for cooling and heating.

FAN OPERATION SELECTION

The fan switch controls the indoor fan operation:

  • AUTO: The fan runs intermittently as needed for heating or cooling, offering the lowest operating cost. Some thermostats may have an "Intelligent fan mode" that circulates air more when occupied.
  • ON: The fan runs continuously. This provides constant air filtering and even temperature distribution, even when the heating/cooling system is not actively running.
  • FAN ONLY OPERATION: On moderate days, you can run the fan alone for ventilation by setting the comfort control to OFF and the fan switch to ON. Remember to return switches to their normal positions afterward.

START-UP

Observe maximum and minimum operating conditions for optimal performance and service life.

SYSTEM OPERATION

Ensure the comfort control switch is in the OFF position before adjusting power. Turn appropriate disconnects ON if main power is off. Follow these steps for system operation:

  1. Set the thermostat to your desired temperature. For cooling, a higher setting saves energy (Federal Guidelines recommend 78°F). For heating, a lower setting saves energy (Federal Guidelines recommend 65°F or lower).
  2. Select the desired fan operation mode (AUTO, ON, or FAN ONLY).
  3. Move the comfort control switch to the required mode (Cooling or Heating).

POWER FAILURE

In case of power disruption (e.g., storms), switch the thermostat to the OFF position.

MANUAL CHANGE-OVER THERMOSTAT

COOLING YOUR HOME

When the indoor temperature exceeds the thermostat setting, the system starts. The outdoor unit operates, and the indoor fan circulates cooled, filtered air. The system shuts off when the temperature reaches the set level.

HEATING YOUR HOME

When the indoor temperature drops below the thermostat setting, the heating system starts. The indoor fan circulates heated, filtered air. The system shuts off when the temperature reaches the set level. The fan operation (AUTO or ON) follows the thermostat's fan setting.

ELECTRONIC THERMOSTAT

Programmed electronic thermostats operate automatically. When the indoor temperature rises above the COOL setting, the system cools the air. When it drops below the HEAT setting, the system heats the air. Fan operation depends on the selected fan switch setting.

TO MAXIMIZE OPERATING EFFICIENCY

HEATING CONSERVATION

  • Keep storm windows and doors closed to insulate against heat and cold, and to block dirt and noise.
  • Close drapes at night and keep fireplace dampers closed when not in use.
  • Use exhaust fans only when necessary to retain heated air.
  • Keep heat-producing appliances (lamps, TVs) away from the thermostat, as their heat can affect temperature readings.

COOLING CONSERVATION

  • To cool effectively, the system must remove both heat and humidity. Do not turn the system off completely when away for extended periods on hot days.
  • Keep windows closed after sundown, even if outdoor air is cooler, as it may be humid and add moisture to your home.
  • Understand that heat stored in walls on hot days can continue to radiate heat into your home after sunset, causing the system to run longer.
  • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans sparingly to avoid removing conditioned air.
  • Close drapes, blinds, and lower awnings on windows receiving direct sunlight.

CARE OF SYSTEM

Regular preventative maintenance by a qualified dealer is strongly recommended to ensure optimal efficiency and compliance with warranty terms.

COIL CARE

Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris (foliage, grass clippings, leaves, paper) that could obstruct airflow. Vacuum the coil fins if necessary. If the coil is very dirty, turn off the main disconnect switch and wash the coil with a garden hose, avoiding the fan motor and control box. Flush the base pan after cleaning.

SERVICE CALLS

Before calling for service, check the following:

  1. Ensure the indoor filter is clean.
  2. Check the outdoor unit for leaf or debris blockage. If found, clear it, turn the thermostat OFF for 10 seconds, then attempt to start. Wait 5 minutes. If the system still does not start, contact your dealer.

WARNING

Your system uses environmentally friendly refrigerant R-410A, which operates at high pressures. Attempting repairs without proper training can be dangerous. Contact your local dealer.

FILTER CARE

Inspect air filters monthly. Wash reusable filters with mild detergent. Replace disposable filters with new ones. Ensure the air flow arrow on the filter points in the direction of airflow in your ductwork. Clean filters are crucial for efficiency and air circulation.

CLEARANCES

Maintain minimum clearances around the outdoor unit for proper operation, especially if making patio or yard improvements.

EXTENDED WARRANTY

YORK Care Performance Promise packages are available through your contractor to reduce potential service call costs after the first year of operation.

SOME EFFICIENCY DOS AND DO NOTS

  • Do not heat or cool unused areas. Reduce airflow to such spaces.
  • Avoid frequent thermostat adjustments ("thermostat jiggling"). Set it to a comfortable level and leave it.
  • Do not restrict air circulation by placing furniture or rugs near vents. This makes the system work harder and consume more energy.
  • Keep heat-producing appliances away from the thermostat.
  • Select comfortable, moderate thermostat settings to save energy.
  • Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans appropriately; excessive use removes conditioned air. Ensure clothes dryers are vented correctly.
  • Set the thermostat a few degrees lower than normal several hours before entertaining a large group in a small area, as people generate heat and moisture.
  • Keep drapes and blinds closed to improve insulation against heat loss/gain.
  • Contact a qualified service person for repairs or adjustments.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAT PUMPS

A CONSTANT HEAT

Heat pumps typically supply air at a lower temperature than furnaces, providing more constant warmth over longer periods. This can sometimes give the impression the system is running continuously, but it's a characteristic of efficient heat transfer.

WATER RUN-OFF

During mild weather heating cycles, water may run off the outdoor coil. This is normal condensation and indicates proper operation, not a leak.

OUTDOOR COIL DEFROSTING

In conditions of low temperature and high humidity, frost can form on the outdoor coil. The system automatically enters a defrost cycle to maintain heating efficiency. Steam or vapor rising from the outdoor unit during this cycle is normal and temporary. Auxiliary heat may engage to maintain comfort during defrost.
