Instruction Manual

Introduction

Thank you for purchasing a Sonance Cinema® Series SUB 10-250 or SUB 12-500 Acoustic Enclosure. When properly installed, these subwoofers will deliver film soundtracks and music with outstanding clarity and realism, even in large home theater rooms. This manual covers the Sonance Cinema SUB 10-250 and 12-500 models.

Subwoofer Placement

Subwoofer placement is a very complicated subject. The ultimate performance of a subwoofer is very room and placement dependent. With in-room subwoofers, the location can be adjusted for best performance. With an in-wall subwoofer, the location is permanent and must be decided during construction. With this in mind, the placement suggestions in this manual have the highest probability for success in most rooms.

One Woofer Placement

In installations with one woofer, the best location will be in the right or left front corner of the room. The second option would be on the front wall in the center of the room. The third option would be between the corner and the center at the 1/4 position.

Option 1: Front corner (left or right).

Option 2: Front wall center.

Option 3: Between corner and center at the 1/4 position.

Two Woofer Placement

In installations with two woofers, the best locations will be in the left and right front corners of the room. The second option would be in the center of the front and rear walls.

Option 1: Left and right front corners.

Option 2: Center of front and rear walls.

Four Woofer Placement

In installations with four woofers, the best locations for the four woofers will be in each of the four corners of the room. The second option would be to put one woofer on each wall in the center.

Option 1: Each of the four corners.

Option 2: One woofer on each wall in the center.

Wire Gauge and Quality

The total wire resistance should be less than 10% of the speaker impedance. The Cinema SUB 10-250 and SUB 12-500 are 8 ohm drivers, so the total wire resistance should be no more than 0.8 ohms.

In simple terms, the extra resistance from the wire will have a very negative effect on the sound quality of the subwoofer. The sound can be less dynamic, and the definition of bass frequencies can be reduced. Amplifier power is also wasted in the wire, reducing the maximum output level of the system.

Wire Resistance in Ohms vs. Length of Cable Run

Distance in Feet 50' 100' 150' 200' 250' 300'
20 gauge 1.04 2.07 3.11 4.14 5.18 6.22
18 gauge .65 1.30 1.96 2.61 3.26 3.91
16 gauge .41 .82 1.22 1.63 2.04 2.45
14 gauge .26 .52 .77 1.03 1.29 1.55
12 gauge .16 .32 .49 .65 .81 .97
10 gauge .10 .20 .31 .41 .51 .61

Connecting the Wire

The SUB 10-250 and 12-500 enclosures feature a unique terminal system. The binding posts are designed to be turned to allow the wire to be run through both binding posts. This is done to increase contact area and provide the most secure and long-lasting connection possible.

  1. Loosen all four binding posts to allow the wire to be pushed through.
  2. Strip off approximately 1-1/4" (32mm) of jacket from the wires.
  3. Run the wire through the appropriate terminals.
  4. Tighten the binding posts.
  5. Tighten the tie wrap around the wires.

Diagram Description: The enclosure has four binding posts. The process involves loosening the posts, stripping about 1-1/4 inches (32mm) of wire jacket, feeding the wire through the posts, tightening the posts securely, and then using a tie wrap to manage the wires.

Installing the Enclosure

  1. Determine the proper location for the subwoofer enclosure using the suggestions on page 1.
  2. Determine the correct height to mount the enclosure. Allow at least 1" (25mm) around the perimeter of the coverplate for clearance of the grille frame and grille.
  3. Verify the enclosure is level using a bubble level. The grille has a limited range of adjustment; ensuring the enclosure is level will greatly simplify the completion of the installation.
  4. Attach the box to the stud or joist bay using the supplied wood screws. Use 4 screws per side on the SUB 10-250 and 6 screws per side on the SUB 12-500.
  5. Drywall should be installed up to the edges of the coverplate. Do not leave more than a 1/8" (3mm) gap around the perimeter of the coverplate.

Diagram Description (Drywall Installation): The diagram shows a cutout in the wall for the enclosure. It illustrates that the coverplate should remain in place until the subwoofer is installed. Drywall should be installed flush with all edges of the coverplate, with a maximum gap of 1/8 inch (3mm) permitted. The Spanish text translates to: "Drywall Instructions: This plate must remain in place. Install drywall flush against all edges. Up to 1/8" (3mm) gap is permitted."

Insulating the Wall Cavity

Subwoofer performance can be enhanced by insulating the cavities above and adjacent to the enclosure with fiberglass insulation. This added fiberglass will minimize any noise that could be caused by the unsupported drywall resonating.

Diagram Description: The diagram shows a wall cavity with fiberglass insulation material installed around the area where the subwoofer enclosure will be placed.

Drywall and Screw Installation

To maximize performance and minimize noise and vibration, it is strongly recommended that one complete piece of drywall be installed over the subwoofer location as shown. Drywall screws should be installed at a spacing of 8"-10" (203-254mm). If drywall is installed on the wall surface behind the subwoofer enclosure, drywall screws should also be installed following these instructions.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT INSTALL DRYWALL SCREWS INTO THE ENCLOSURE. THE ENCLOSURE IS DESIGNED TO FLOAT INSIDE THE WALL.

Diagram Description: Diagrams illustrate the process of installing drywall and placing screws at recommended intervals (8-10 inches). A key visual emphasizes that screws should not penetrate the enclosure itself, as it needs to float within the wall structure.
