General Electric ET-16 and ET-17 Indicating Lamps

General Electric Indicating Lamps

Model Series: ET-16 (Incandescent) and ET-17 (Neon)

Document: GEH-3500 B (Supercedes GEH-3500 A)

Introduction

The ET-16 (incandescent) and ET-17 (neon) indicating lamps are comprised of a common receptacle, plug-in type resistors and lamps, an escutcheon, and a color cap. They are available for mounting on switchboard panels up to and including 1/4 inch thickness.

Application

These lamps are suitable for use whenever a panel-mounted signal or indicating lamp is desired. The ET-16 is available for either single brilliance or dim-bright operation. The ET-17 is recommended when extra-long life is a primary factor and brilliance is secondary, or when low current consumption is desired.

Features

  • A simple "push-twist" type plug, incorporating a bayonet base, is used for both the bulb and the resistor, facilitating easy component changes.
  • A common receptacle for both ET-16 and ET-17 models, combined with the plug-in resistor and bulb, allows for simple replacement without disassembling the panel unit.
  • The resistor is connected in series with the bulb. Its ohmic value is designed at 80% of the rated bulb voltage to ensure longer bulb life. Voltage changes can be accommodated by simply changing the series resistor (refer to tables for appropriate resistor values).
  • A short-circuit plug is available for applications where a series resistor is not required or when an external resistor is used.
  • Standard GE extra-long-life bulbs are specified: GE Cat. No. 1819 for the 24 V DC lamp and GE Cat. No. 1835 for other ratings in the ET-16. The ET-17 uses GE Cat. No. B1A.
  • Terminals are easily accessible and designed for AMP "FASTON" type connectors, solder, or screws.
  • Nine basic color caps are available for the ET-16 to maximize visibility: Translucent-red, green, yellow, white. Transparent-amber, red, green, blue, and clear. For the ET-17, due to the properties of neon, only amber, transparent red, and clear lenses are suitable. The color caps feature a knurled outside diameter for easy removal.
  • The ET-16 is also offered for dim-bright applications.
  • For special voltage or resistance requirements not listed, special lamps can be ordered with specific designs or designated series resistors.
  • Each indicating light includes a two-inch insulating washer. This washer should be mounted on the inside of the panel (as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4) to provide additional insulation between the terminal and the panel ground, protecting against surges.

If a bulb other than those listed is required, the lamp will be supplied without the bulb. Specific specials are detailed in the accompanying tables.

These instructions do not purport to cover all details or variations. For further information or specific problems, refer to the General Electric Company. Products described meet applicable ANSI, IEEE, and NEMA standards, but local code compliance varies.

Connections

Refer to Figure 1A and 1B for typical tell-tale and dim-bright connection diagrams.

Recommended Panel Assembly

Thread the panel nut against the shoulder of the receptacle. Install the two-inch insulating washer on the front of the receptacle against the panel nut. Insert the receptacle through the panel and thread the escutcheon nut against the panel. Install the color cap; hand tighten (do not force). Turn the escutcheon nut back up against the color cap, then back off 1/2 to 3/4 turn (recommend 3/4 turn) to provide at least 1/64 inch clearance but not more than 1/32 inch clearance between the color cap and escutcheon nut (for panels up to 3/16 inch thick). For 1/4 inch panels, the color cap will be flush with the escutcheon nut. Tighten the panel nut against the panel to 10-12 inch-pounds torque.

Figure 1B: Schematic diagram for circuit breaker open indication using a dim-bright connection. This setup uses a lamp unit with a tapped resistor and a control switch. When the breaker is tripped, the lamp glows with low brilliancy; if tripped automatically, a short circuit across part of the resistor makes the lamp glow brightly, aiding in identifying non-manual operations.
