Operating Tips

  • Keep the trimmer tilted toward the area being cut for the best cutting area.
  • The string trimmer cuts when moved from right to left, preventing debris from being thrown at you.
  • Use the tip of the string for cutting; do not force the string head into uncut grass.
  • Wire and picket fences, stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood can cause the string to wear rapidly and break.
  • Avoid trees and shrubs, as the string can easily damage tree bark, wood moldings, siding, and fence posts.

Figure 11 Description: Diagram shows the trimmer in use with arrows indicating the direction of rotation (1) and the string path (2) for optimal cutting.

Maintenance

After each use of the trimmer:

  1. Remove the battery from the power head.
  2. Wipe the trimmer clean with a damp cloth. Do not hose or submerge the trimmer in water.

CAUTION: The line cutoff blade on the deflector is sharp and can cut you. Do not use your hands to clean the deflector shield and blade.

  1. Wipe or scrape clean the cutting head area if debris accumulates.
  2. Check and tighten all fasteners. Repair or replace any damaged or lost parts.
  3. Brush debris away from air intake vents and exhaust on the motor housing to prevent the motor from overheating.

Replacing the String

Important: Use only 2 mm (0.080 inch) diameter monofilament string (Part No. 88611) or 2.4 mm (0.095 inch) diameter twisted monofilament string (Part No. 88202).

  1. Remove the battery pack and clean any debris from the trimmer head.
  2. Remove old string by repeatedly pressing the bump button while pulling the line out equally from both sides.
  3. Cut string: 4.9 m (16 ft) for 2 mm string; 3 m (10 ft) for 2.4 mm twisted string.

Important: Do not use any other gauge or type of string, and do not exceed the recommended length, as this could damage the trimmer.

  1. Press and turn the knob on the string head until its arrow aligns with the arrow on the string head (Figure 12).
  2. Insert one end of the line into the LINE IN eyelet and push it through the string head track until it exits the eyelet on the other side. Pull the line until it is evenly divided on each side.

Important: Do not disassemble the trimmer head.

  1. Hold the string head in place with one hand. With your other hand, rotate the knob clockwise.
  2. Wind the line, leaving about 102 mm (4 inches) extending beyond the eyelet on each side.

Figure 12 Description: Diagrams show the string head mechanism for replacing string. Shows arrows (1) on the knob (2) aligning with the string head (3), the LINE IN eyelet, and the string (5) being wound.

Lubricating the Gearbox

Service Interval: Every 25 hours or monthly, whichever comes first.

  1. Shut off the trimmer, remove the battery pack, and clean debris from the trimmer head.
  2. Set the trimmer so the gearbox is upright.
  3. Remove the plug from the side of the trimmer (Figure 13).

Figure 13 Description: Diagram shows the side of the trimmer head with an arrow pointing to the gearbox plug (1).

  1. Apply a small amount of grease into the gearbox using a grease gun.

Important: If storing the machine for a year or longer, remove the battery pack and charge it until 1 or 2 LED indicators turn green. Do not store a fully charged or fully depleted battery. When ready to use again, charge until the left indicator light on the charger turns green or all 4 LED indicators on the battery turn green.

  • Disconnect the machine from the power supply (remove battery pack) and check for damage after use.
  • Clean all foreign material from the machine.
  • Do not store the machine or charger with the battery pack installed.
  • When not in use, store the machine, battery pack, and charger out of the reach of children.
  • Keep the machine, battery pack, and charger away from corrosive agents like garden chemicals and de-icing salts.
  • To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, do not store the battery pack outside or in vehicles.
  • Store the machine, battery pack, and charger in an enclosed clean, dry area.

California Proposition 65 Warning Information

You may see a product for sale with a warning label like the following: WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm--www.p65Warnings.ca.gov.

What is Prop 65?

Prop 65 applies to companies operating in or selling products in California. It mandates a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, and/or other reproductive harm. The list is updated annually and includes hundreds of chemicals found in everyday items. The purpose is to inform the public about exposure to these chemicals.

Prop 65 does not ban products containing these chemicals but requires warnings on products, packaging, or literature. A Prop 65 warning does not mean a product violates safety standards. The California government clarifies that a Prop 65 warning is not a decision that a product is 'safe' or 'unsafe.' Many chemicals have been used for years without documented harm. For more information, go to https://oag.ca.gov/prop65/faqs-view-all.

A Prop 65 warning means a company has either (1) evaluated exposure and concluded it exceeds the "no significant risk level"; or (2) has chosen to provide a warning based on its understanding of a listed chemical's presence without evaluating exposure.

Does this law apply everywhere?

Prop 65 warnings are required under California law only. They are seen throughout California in various settings and on many products. Some online and mail order retailers also provide these warnings.

How do the California warnings compare to federal limits?

Prop 65 standards are often more stringent than federal and international standards. For example, the Prop 65 standard for warnings for lead is 0.5 µg/day, well below federal limits.

Why don't all similar products carry the warning?

  • Products sold in California require Prop 65 labeling, while similar products sold elsewhere may not.
  • Companies involved in Prop 65 lawsuits may be required to use warnings, while others may not.
  • Enforcement of Prop 65 is inconsistent.
  • Companies may choose not to provide warnings if they believe they are not required to, but a lack of warnings does not mean a product is free of listed chemicals.

Why does Toro include this warning?

Toro provides warnings to give consumers information to make informed decisions. Toro provides warnings based on its knowledge of chemical presence, even if exposure levels are negligible or within the "no significant risk" range. This is done out of an abundance of caution, as not providing warnings could lead to lawsuits and penalties.
