Gate Assembly Instructions
This assembly requires an intermediate skill level. Prior experience with tools and assembly techniques is recommended. Position components on a sturdy work table.
Part A: Gate Assembly Instructions
1. Metal Frame Assembly
Begin by assembling the metal frame, which serves as the structural backbone of the gate.
1.1 Connect the Frame Components:
- Take 2 Horizontal Upper/Lower Frames (G) and connect them with 2 Frame Extensions (H).
- Ensure components are aligned properly for a seamless connection.
- Tips for a Secure Fit: The fit between metal frame parts (G and H) is designed to be tight for structural stability. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap components together. Start with light taps and gradually increase force as needed.
Verify that all connections are tight and properly aligned before proceeding.
2. Install the Square Edge Boards and Spacers
2.1 Prepare the Work Area:
Place the assembled frame on two support structures (e.g., 2x4 wood pieces) for stability and easy access.
2.2 Insert 1" Spacer in the Corner of the Metal Frames:
- Attach two Velcro dots (M) to the unfinished sides of two 1" spacers (L).
- Insert the 1" spacers (L) into each of the top corners of the metal frame (G).
2.3 Insert 1.5" Spacers and Boards:
- Attach one Velcro dot (M) to the unfinished side of a 1.5" spacer (K).
- Place two spacers (K) under each side of the first board (C), ensuring they are securely attached to the metal frame and in contact with the board.
2.4 Insert Additional Boards and Spacers:
- Repeat the process for the next 7 boards (C), alternating between inserting a board and attaching two 1.5" spacers (K) on each side to the metal frame.
- Ensure all boards and spacers are aligned properly and securely.
2.5 Insert the Final Board:
The last board is secured at the bottom by spacers and at the top by direct contact with the metal frame. Guide the board into place gently, ensuring it sits flush with the spacers and the metal frame.
Finally, insert the two remaining 1" spacers (L) in each of the corners of the metal frame.
Confirm that the frame, boards, and spacers are stable before proceeding.
3. Position the Horizontal and Vertical U-Posts
3.1 Insert the Vertical U-Posts:
- Take the 2 Vertical U-Posts (B) and insert them into the metal frame and the Square Edge boards.
- Align the channel of the Vertical U-Post (B) with the edge of the metal frame and the sides of the T&G boards. Slide the U-Post fully into place, ensuring the boards and frame are enclosed.
- Repeat for the opposite side.
- Note: Ensure the Vertical U-Posts (B) are equal in length at the top and bottom relative to the metal frame for proper alignment.
3.2 Insert the Horizontal U-Posts:
- Take the 2 Horizontal U-Posts (A) and prepare to insert them into the metal frame.
- Use 2x4 support structures to provide space for the Horizontal U-Posts (A).
- Slide the first Horizontal U-Post (A) into the frame, ensuring its channel fits snugly over the metal frame edge and secures the boards. Push the U-Post fully in.
- Slide the support structures to make space for the second Horizontal U-Post (A) and insert it in the same manner.
Key Notes: Double-check that all U-Posts are properly seated and aligned, fully enclosing the Square Edge boards and the metal frame. The assembly should be secure with no visible gaps or misalignment.
4. Secure the Gate
Fasten the cutting screws through the pre-drilled holes on the horizontal and vertical U-Posts (B) into the metal frame. This requires 8 pre-drilled holes and 8 screws (F).
4.1 Verify Alignment:
Ensure the alignment of the U-Posts (B) with the metal frame has not shifted. The pre-drilled holes must align perfectly.
4.2 Pre-Drill Holes into the Metal Frame:
Using a 17/64-inch drill bit, pre-drill 8 holes into the metal frame where the U-Post holes align. Drill carefully to maintain accurate alignment.
4.3 Insert Cutting Screws:
Insert the cutting screws (F) into each pre-drilled hole on the U-Posts (B). Use a power drill to drive the screws securely into the metal frame. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN.
Why should I not over-tighten my screws? Over-tightening can strip the screw (cut into the metal) and potentially lead to failure.
4.4 Check Stability:
Verify the gate's stability. Ensure all screws are tightened and the U-Posts are firmly attached to the metal frame.
5. Top Cap Installation
- Slide the Modern Sliding Top Cap (D) into the routed space on the top of the Horizontal U-Channel Post (A).
- Fix into position using one 1 5/8 Torx composite screw (E) and a drill.
- Repeat for all Vertical U-Channel Posts (B).
Part B: Hanging the Modern Gate
Premium Hardware for Optimal Performance
Proper installation is essential to ensure smooth functionality and longevity.
Hinge Installation Note
The NC Gate requires hinges to be secured into the gate through the composite material and into the metal frame.
- Pre-Drill for the Gate Side: Use a 5/32" drill bit to pre-drill holes for hinge screws. Ensure screws penetrate the composite U-Post and the metal frame. 4 of the 6 screws on the gate side will anchor into the metal frame.
- Pre-Drill for the Post Side: If using an NC 5x5 Commercial Post, pre-drill holes with a 5/32" drill bit. Insert a 4x4 post insert inside the 5x5 post for reinforcement. Ensure hinge screws penetrate both the 5x5 post and the 4x4 post insert.
Hinge position: Should be installed as shown in drawing [3.5 inches from the top and bottom].

Note: For hinge screws, pre-drilled holes must go through the composite material and penetrate the internal metal frame.
Part C: Installing Gate with NC Modern Fence System
Gate Opening Requirements
The opening between posts should measure 48 inches to accommodate the gate width and hardware spacing. This allows for the 45.5-inch-wide gate plus 1.25-inch clearance on each side for hinges.
Important: To add a gate, use two NC 5x5 Commercial Posts. The gate is 48" wide, and each 5x5 post is 5.5" wide, so space them 59" apart (outside to outside) for proper hinge and latch function.
Proper Support for Your Gate
The gate weighs approximately 90 pounds and requires robust support. Natures Composites offers a 5x5 Commercial Grade Composite Post that matches the gate's color and material.
- NC 5x5 Commercial Post Dimensions: Outside dimensions 5x5 inches; Inside dimensions 3.87 inches (3 7/8").
- Reinforcement: For full-size gates, reinforce the NC 5x5 post by inserting a 4x4 treated wood post (3.5" x 3.5") inside the composite post for increased strength and durability.
Post Burial Recommendations
- Select the Correct Post Length: NC offers 5x5 Commercial Posts in lengths of 94", 108", and 132". Consult your contractor for guidance on the appropriate length based on local soil and engineering conditions.
- Burial Depth and Concrete Requirements: Bury at least 1/3 of the post length in the ground (e.g., a 94" post requires 31 inches of burial depth). Use a minimum of 80-100 pounds of concrete per post for a solid foundation. Ensure the post is plumb.
Note on Double Gates: Natures Composites does not recommend using these gates as double gates due to their weight. For custom double gate solutions, please contact Natures Composites.
1. Screw the U-Channel Fence Post to the 5x5 Post
Attach the NC U-Channel fence post to the 5x5 heavy duty post, ensuring the 4x4 pressure treated post is within for extra strength.
2. Bury the Posts Together into the Ground
Assembled posts should be buried together in the ground. Ensure they are tightly screwed and aligned.
