Installation and Operation Instructions
Please read and save these instructions before installing or operating your fan.
Safety Warnings
- To reduce the risk of fire, electrical shock, or injury, observe all safety precautions.
- Always turn off power at the service panel and lock it before servicing or cleaning.
- Installation and electrical wiring must be performed by qualified persons in accordance with all applicable codes and standards.
- Ensure adequate air for proper combustion and exhausting of gases.
- Do not damage electrical wiring or other hidden utilities when cutting or drilling.
- Ducted fans must always be vented to the outdoors.
- This unit is acceptable for use over a bathtub or shower when installed in a GFCI protected branch circuit.
- Install the fan at least 5 feet (1.52 m) above the floor.
- Never place a switch where it can be reached from a tub or shower.
- This unit must be grounded.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves during installation, maintenance, or cleaning.
- If the fan makes excessive noise or emits unusual smells, disconnect power and contact customer service.
- Do not use replacement parts not recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not use this fan with any solid-state speed control device.
Caution
- For general ventilation use only. Do not use to exhaust hazardous or explosive materials and vapors.
- Keep drywall spray, construction dust, etc., off the power unit to avoid motor bearing damage and noisy or unbalanced impellers.
- Refer to the product's specification label for further information and requirements.
Fan Location / Installation
New Construction (prior to finishing ceiling or wall)
- Ensure housing is flush with the finished ceiling or wall.
- Use provided slotted tabs to locate housing with 1/2" ceiling or wall material. Bend tabs outward 90 degrees and position housing so tabs rest on the bottom of the joist or wall stud.
- Screw housing to joist or stud using installation ears on the outside or holes on the inside of the housing. Secure with four screws for a solid installation.
Replacement / New Installation in Ceiling or Wall
- Ensure housing is next to a ceiling joist or wall stud for proper attachment before cutting the opening.
- Trace the outline of the housing in the desired location next to the ceiling joist or wall stud.
- Cut the opening cleanly. If the cut is not clean, finishing work will be needed after installation.
- Place housing in the opening with the bottom edge flush to the finished ceiling or wall.
- Use provided slotted tabs to locate housing with 1/2" ceiling or wall material. Bend tabs outward 90 degrees.
- Screw housing to joist or stud using holes on the inside of the housing. Secure with two screws for a tight fit.
Electrical Wiring
- Turn off power at the service entrance.
- Connect fan wiring to house wiring using correct size wire connectors.
- Connect the black supply wire to the black wire on the wire panel.
- Connect the white supply wire to the white wire on the wire panel.
- Connect the ground (copper) supply wire to the green or copper wire in the wire panel.
- Push all wiring into the corner under the wire panel and slide the wire panel back into place. Ensure the tab on top is locked into the side of the housing.
- CAUTION: Do not allow wires to extend outside the wiring panel. Exposed wires can be pinched or cut, potentially causing an electrical short.
Ducting and Finishing
- The duct connector is 3". A 4" duct requires a 3" to 4" transition (Model 4638 - not included).
- For best performance, use the shortest, straightest duct routing possible and avoid installing the fan with smaller ducts than recommended.
- Insulation around the ducts can reduce energy loss and inhibit mold growth.
- New Construction: Install duct on the outside of the housing, ensuring it is as straight as possible. FLEX duct must be stretched 2' at the fan and roof/wall cap. Ensure the full duct run is not bent. For rigid duct, the seam should be at the top of the duct connector. Use aluminum tape around the duct to the duct connector and housing to assure a tight seal – NO AIR LEAKAGE.
- Replacement / New Cut-in Drywall: Use a screwdriver through the square opening to unlatch and slide the duct connector to the left to disconnect it from the housing. Pull the FLEX duct through the opening and attach it to the duct connector using aluminum tape. Push the duct and duct connector back through the opening, stretching the FLEX duct. Slide the duct connector to the right until it latches to the housing. Use aluminum tape over the latch square opening and between the duct connector and housing to assure a tight seal – NO AIR LEAKAGE.
Final Assembly
- Replace the motor plate by inserting it at a slight angle into the two tabs. Press down on the opposite side until the single tab engages into the housing. Ensure it is secured.
- Squeeze the grille springs and insert them into the two slots on the motor plate. Push the grille up until the grille legs or grille are flush with the ceiling or wall.
Maintenance
- For quiet and efficient operation, long life, and attractive appearance, regularly clean the grille and interior of the unit.
- To Clean the Grille: Remove the grille, use a mild detergent (like dishwashing liquid), and dry with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cloths, steel wool pads, or scouring powders.
- To Clean Interior of Unit: Once the grille is removed, vacuum the interior with a dusting brush attachment.
- The motor is permanently lubricated and never needs oiling.
- If the unit is making excessive or unusual noise, replace the blower assembly (including motor and impeller).
