QRP Labs QMX Transceiver

An introduction to the QRP Labs QMX, a versatile 5W multi-band, multi-mode transceiver kit.

About the QMX

The QRP Labs QMX is a high-performance, 5 or 6-band multi-mode 5W QRP transceiver kit. It features a sophisticated SDR receiver powered by a 168MHz 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller. The firmware continuously expands its capabilities, offering a wide range of functionalities for amateur radio enthusiasts.

Key Features

  • Portability: Small size and low current consumption make it ideal for portable operations like SOTA and POTA.
  • Versatile Operation: Can be used as a standalone CW transceiver or connected to a PC for digital modes (WSJT-X, etc.) via a single USB-C cable.
  • Synthesized VFO: Features a Si5351A or MS5351M synthesizer chip with rotary encoder tuning, supporting two VFOs (A/B), split operation, and RIT.
  • Memory Presets: Includes 16 frequency presets for quick access to favorite operating frequencies.
  • Message Mode: Supports storage of 12 messages, each up to 50 characters long, for automated transmissions.
  • CW Keyer: Integrated lambic keyer with configurable modes (A, B, Ultimatic) and adjustable speed.
  • Full/Semi Break-in: Supports both full break-in (QSK) and semi break-in modes.
  • CW Decoder: Built-in decoder useful for learning CW or entering text.
  • Beacon Mode: Can be configured for CW, FSKCW, or WSPR beacon operation, with optional GPS integration for precise timing and location data.
  • SWR Measurement: Integrated SWR bridge for continuous measurement and optional transmit prevention.
  • Real-time Clock: Displayable real-time clock, settable manually or via GPS.
  • High-Performance Audio: Features a 48ksps 24-bit USB soundcard for lossless audio transfer to/from a PC.
  • CAT Control: Supports CAT control commands via a Virtual COM serial port, compatible with logging software and digital mode programs.

Connectivity

The QMX offers various connectors for peripherals:

  • Paddle Connector: A 3.5mm stereo jack used for CW paddle, GPS interface, or microphone input.
  • Audio Connector: Standard 3.5mm stereo jack for earphones.
  • DC Connector: 2.1mm barrel jack for power input (6.0V to 12.0V).
  • RF Connector: 50-ohm BNC connector for antenna connection.
  • PTT Connector: 3.5mm stereo jack for PTT control of external amplifiers.
  • USB Connector: USB-C type for PC connection (sound card, serial port, firmware updates).

The QMX+ model includes additional connectors like a SMA GPS connector and an AUX connector.

Important Notes

  • Assembly instructions are provided in a separate document.
  • Ensure the correct supply voltage (12.0V recommended) is used.
  • Read the manual carefully before applying power to the board.
