About the QMX
The QRP Labs QMX is a versatile and portable transceiver kit designed for amateur radio enthusiasts. It features a sophisticated Software Defined Radio (SDR) receiver and a 32-bit ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller, offering a wide range of functionalities for both CW and digital mode operations.
Key Features
- Portability: Compact size and low current consumption make it ideal for portable operations like SOTA (Summits on the Air) and POTA (Parks on the Air).
- Versatile Operation: Can be used as a standalone CW transceiver or as a Digimodes modem when connected to a PC.
- Synthesized VFO: Features a Si5351A or MS5351M synthesizer chip with a rotary encoder for tuning, offering two VFOs (A and B) and RIT functionality.
- Memory and Messaging: Includes 16 frequency presets and supports storage of 12 messages for automated transmissions.
- CW Keyer: Integrated lambic keyer with adjustable speed and support for various modes.
- Digital Modes: Seamless integration with PC software like WSJT-X for digital mode operation via a USB-C connection, which also provides a high-performance soundcard.
- SWR Measurement: Built-in SWR bridge for monitoring and protection.
- Real-time Clock: Display of current time, which can be set via GPS or manually.
Connectivity
The QMX offers various connectors for peripherals:
- Paddle Connector: For CW paddle input, GPS interface, or microphone and PTT input for SSB mode.
- Audio Connector: For connecting 32-ohm earphones.
- DC Connector: For power input (6.0V to 12.0V).
- RF Connector: A 50-ohm BNC connector for antenna connection.
- PTT Connector: For controlling external amplifiers.
- USB Connector: USB-C for PC connection, firmware updates, and CAT control.
The QMX+ model includes additional connectors for GPS and AUX functions.
Firmware and Updates
The QMX operates on firmware version 1.02_004. QRP Labs provides free firmware updates that enhance performance and add new features. Updates are performed via the USB connection, where the QMX appears as a USB Flash drive.
