- Close the cylinder valve.
Ignition Instructions
Igniter Button:
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Open the lid.
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Close all burner control knobs. Connect a disposable cylinder.
Main Burner Ignition
- Open the lid.
- Press and slowly turn one of the main burner control knobs to "high". This will light the selected burner.
- If the burner does not light, immediately turn the control knob to "off" and repeat step 2 several times.
- If the burner does not light within 5 seconds, turn the control knob to "off" and wait 5 minutes for any excess gas to dissipate. Repeat steps 2 and 3, or light with a match.
- If lighting the appliance with a match, secure it in the provided igniter rod. Hold the lit match and lower it into the grill until it is near the burner, then turn the corresponding burner valve to "HIGH".
Operation Instructions
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Do not use this appliance under an awning. Failure to comply with this safety measure could result in fire or injury.
DANGER! Wait for the grill to cool down before storing it. Failure to comply with this safety measure could result in a fire causing property damage, injury, or death.
Initial Lighting: When first lit, the grill will emit a slight odor. This is normal and temporary, caused by the evaporation of internal paints and lubricants used in the manufacturing process, and will not recur. Simply light the firebox burners on "high" for half an hour.
Burner Usage: Before cooking food, it is recommended to preheat the grill on "high" with the lid closed for approximately 10 minutes. Short-cooking items (fish, vegetables) can be grilled with the lid open. Cooking with the lid closed will provide higher, more consistent temperatures, reducing cooking time and cooking meat more evenly. Items requiring over 30 minutes of cooking time, such as roasts, can be cooked using the indirect method (with the burner on the side opposite the meat). When cooking very lean meats, such as chicken breast or lean pork, it is advisable to oil the cooking grates before preheating, which will help prevent the meat from sticking to the grates. Cooking meat with a high fat content can cause sudden flare-ups. Simply remove excess fat before cooking or reduce the temperature to remedy this problem. In case of flare-ups, move food away from the flame and reduce the temperature. Keep the lid open. For more detailed instructions, consult Napoleon's "All-Season Recipe Book".
Cleaning
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Always wear protective gloves and safety glasses when cleaning your grill.
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Ensure the burners are off before cleaning. Avoid contact with hot surfaces. Clean your grill in an area where cleaning products will not damage your patio, ground, or terrace. Do not use oven cleaner to clean your grill. BBQ sauce and salt are very corrosive and will cause rapid deterioration of your grill unless cleaned regularly.
Note: Stainless steel tends to oxidize or stain in the presence of chlorides and sulfides commonly found in coastal areas, as well as in hot and humid environments like swimming pools and spas. These stains may appear as rust but can be easily removed and even prevented. To prevent staining, clean all stainless steel and chrome surfaces every three to four weeks or as needed with fresh water and a stainless steel cleaner.
Cast Iron Grates: The cast iron grates included with your new grill offer superior heat retention and distribution. Oiling your cooking grates adds a protective layer that helps the grates resist corrosion better and enhances their non-stick properties.
First Use: Clean the cooking grates by hand with mild dish soap and water to remove any residue from the manufacturing process (never wash in a dishwasher). Rinse thoroughly with hot water and dry completely with a soft cloth. This is important to prevent moisture from penetrating the cast iron.
Maintenance: Using a soft cloth, apply a layer of VEGETABLE SHORTENING to the entire surface of the grate, ensuring all nooks and crannies are covered. Do not use salted fats like butter or margarine. Preheat your grill for 15 minutes, then place the cooking grates on the grill. Turn the control knobs to medium heat, then close the lid. Let the cooking grates heat for about half an hour. Turn off the burner and shut off the gas supply at the source. Let the cooking grates cool. This procedure should be repeated several times during the season, although it is not required for every grill use (follow the daily use procedure below).
Daily Use: Before preheating and cleaning with a brass brush, apply a layer of VEGETABLE SHORTENING to the entire surface of the grates. Preheat the grill and remove any residue with a brass brush.
Cleaning (Continued)
Interior Grill Cleaning: Remove the cooking grates. Use a brass brush to remove any non-incrusted debris from the sides of the firebox and the inside of the lid. Clean all debris from inside the grill by letting it fall into the drip tray.
Drip Tray Cleaning: Remove the drip tray for easier cleaning. It should be cleaned frequently to prevent grease buildup. Grease and cooking juices accumulate in the drip tray located under the grill. Grease buildup can create a fire hazard. Never line your drip tray with aluminum foil, as this will hinder the air supply necessary for proper burner operation. The drip tray should be scraped with a putty knife or scraper.
Exterior Grill Cleaning: Do not use abrasive cleaners on painted, porcelain-finished, or stainless steel parts. Porcelain enameled parts must be handled with care. The enameled finish is fired and brittle like glass; it will chip at the slightest impact. You can obtain enamel paint for touch-ups from your Napoleon retailer. Use a warm soapy water solution to clean the grill exterior while it is still warm to the touch. For stainless steel surfaces, use a stainless steel cleaner or an all-purpose non-abrasive cleaner. Always rub in the direction of the grain. Do not use steel wool, as it will scratch the finish. Stainless steel parts will discolor under heat, usually appearing golden or brown. This discoloration is normal and will not affect the grill's performance. For repairs to the finish on cast aluminum parts, sand them with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface and paint with high-temperature grill paint. Protect surrounding areas from paint fumes. Follow the drying instructions on the paint can.
Maintenance Instructions
It is recommended to have this gas grill inspected annually by a qualified service technician. The gas grill location must be kept clear of all combustible materials, gasoline, or other flammable liquids and vapors at all times. Combustible air and ventilation air intakes must not be obstructed.
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Always wear protective gloves and safety glasses when cleaning your grill.
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Shut off the gas at the source and disconnect the appliance before maintenance. Maintenance should only be performed when the grill is cold to avoid any possibility of burns. A leak detection test should be performed annually or each time a gas component is replaced.
Burner: The burner is made of heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel, but extreme heat and a corrosive environment can cause surface corrosion. This corrosion can be removed with a brass brush.
CAUTION! Beware of spiders.
Spiders and insects are attracted to the smell of propane and natural gas. The burner is equipped with a screen on the air shutter, which reduces the probability of insects building nests in the burner, but does not completely eliminate the problem. The presence of a nest or spider web in the burner will produce a pale yellow or orange flame, or cause a flashback at the air shutter under the control panel. To clean the inside of the burner, remove it from the gas grill: Remove the screw(s) securing the igniter bridge support and the burner to the base. Slide the burner backward and upward to remove it.
Cleaning: Use a flexible venturi brush to clean the inside of the burner. Shake out all debris from the burner by letting it exit through the gas inlet opening. Check if the burner orifices and valve orifices are obstructed. Burner orifices can become clogged over time due to debris and corrosion; use a straightened paper clip to clean them. The orifices are easier to clean if the burner is removed from the appliance, but cleaning can also be done with the burner in place.
CAUTION! Be careful not to enlarge the holes.
Ensure the insect screen is clean, tight, and free of fibers or other debris.
Reinstallation: Reverse the procedure to reinstall the burner. During installation, check that the valve enters the burner. Reinstall the igniter bridge support and tighten the screws to complete the installation.
Additional Warnings
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! When reinstalling the burner after cleaning, it is very important that the valve/orifice enters the burner before you light your gas grill. If the valve is not inside the burner, a fire or explosion could occur.
⚠️ AVERTISSEMENT! Hose: Check for wear, cuts, cracks, or melting. If you discover any of these defects, do not use your grill. Have the part replaced by your Napoleon retailer or a qualified installer.
Aluminum Castings: Your grill features a cast aluminum lid that will not rust and can be easily repainted. The interior of the lid is raw aluminum, and casting marks and mold release agents may be present. This is not a defect, but marks from the mold used in the manufacturing process. Periodically clean the castings with a warm soapy water solution. Aluminum will not rust, but due to high heat and climatic effects, oxidation will occur on aluminum surfaces. This will appear as white spots on the castings. To repair the finish on the castings, sand them with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe the surface and paint with high-temperature grill paint. Protect surrounding areas from paint fumes. Follow the drying instructions on the paint can.
Troubleshooting Guide
Problem | Possible Causes | Solutions |
---|---|---|
Low heat / small flame when control knob is on "high". | Gas flow is blocked. Poor preheating. |
Check for spider webs inside the burner or orifice. Preheat the grill by lighting the burner on "high" for 5 to 10 minutes. |
Cylinder does not meet demand. | After long cooking periods or when the cylinder is nearly empty or the outside temperature is low, 1 lb cylinders do not have enough vaporization to allow liquid propane to turn into gas. Install a new 1 lb cylinder. | |
Excessive flare-ups / uneven heat. | Poor preheating. | Preheat the grill by lighting the burner on "high" for 5 to 10 minutes. |
Flames produced by burners are yellow and you detect a gas odor. | Excessive grease and ash buildup in the drip tray. | Clean the drip tray regularly. Do not line the drip tray with aluminum foil. Refer to cleaning instructions. |
Flames detach from the burner, accompanied by a gas odor and possibly difficulty lighting. | Possible spider webs or other debris, or improper air shutter adjustment. | Remove the burner and clean it completely. Refer to maintenance instructions. Slightly open the air shutter while complying with air shutter adjustment instructions. (This should be done by a qualified gas installer) |
Burner does not light with the igniter but lights with a match. | Poor air shutter adjustment. | Slightly close the air shutter while complying with air shutter adjustment instructions. (This should be done by a qualified gas installer) |
Electrode wire is damaged. | Replace the wire. | |
Electrode wire is loose. | Ensure the electrode wire is pushed all the way in and is securely fastened to the terminal behind the igniter. | |
Electrode is cracked or broken. | Replace the electrode. | |
Regulator hums when the appliance is operating. | Normal problem in warm weather. | This is not a defect. The humming is caused by vibration inside the regulator and does not affect the gas grill's performance or safety. Regulators emitting a hum will not be replaced. |
Paint appears to peel inside the lid or hood. | Grease buildup on internal surfaces. | This is not a defect. Peeling is caused by hardened grease that flakes off like paint. Regular cleaning will prevent this problem. Refer to cleaning instructions. |
Control is set to "high" but heat generated by the burner is too low. (Rumbling and irregular blue flame on the burner surface.) Infrared model only. | Lack of gas. Gas supply hose is pinched. Burner injector is dirty or obstructed. Presence of spider webs or other debris in the venturi tube. |
Check propane level in the cylinder. Replace the gas supply hose properly. Clean the burner injector. Clean the venturi tube. |
