Vehicle Evacuation

Towing Eyes

Towing eyes in the front and rear of the vehicle are intended solely for road towing. Using them for any other purpose may result in damage to the vehicle or serious injury.

Caution: Before driving off-road, remove the front and rear towing eye covers to prevent damage or loss. The front and rear towing points are located behind removable covers.

To detach the front cover:

  1. Turn each retaining clip 90 degrees clockwise with a coin (or similar object) to release the front cover.
  2. Lower the top edge and pull the cover forward.

When refitting: Ensure the two tabs on the lower edge align with the body panel holes, then secure by turning the retaining clips 90 degrees clockwise.

To detach the rear cover:

  1. Turn each retaining clip 90 degrees counter-clockwise with a coin (or similar object) to release the lower edge.
  2. Turn the panel to release the upper clips. Remove the cover.

For vehicles equipped with an electric tow bar, the towing eye is included in the tool kit located under the floor panel in the luggage compartment.

Screw the towing eye counter-clockwise into its designated mounting until it is fully engaged.

When refitting the rear cover, ensure the four hooks on the upper edge of the cover engage with the body panel, then secure by turning each retaining clip 90 degrees clockwise. The rear towing point may be used for towing another vehicle if necessary.

Steering Column Lock

When towing the vehicle, the electronic key must be in the cabin and the ignition switched on to keep the steering column unlocked.

Vehicle Evacuation Off-Road

If you intend to use the towing eyes for off-road evacuation, you must complete an off-road driving course that includes vehicle evacuation techniques. For more information on off-road driving, visit www.landroverexperience.com.

Vehicle Transportation

The vehicle should be transported on a specially designed trailer. Always use qualified professionals for towing and securing the vehicle.

Caution: Exercise extreme caution when transporting or towing the vehicle. Serious injury or death may occur.

If the vehicle's electronic systems are functioning, select the appropriate ride height for the air suspension before securing the vehicle to the recovery vehicle or trailer. Refer to section 119, 'Ride Height'.

Towing with All Four Wheels on the Ground

Towing the vehicle with all four wheels on the ground should only be done in exceptional circumstances and over short distances. Follow these instructions carefully:

Caution: Before towing, a recovery specialist MUST activate the emergency parking brake disengage function. Refer to the separate service manual for instructions.

If the gearbox is placed in neutral (N) and the engine is switched off, the gearbox will engage the parking brake after 10 minutes. If the emergency parking brake disengage function has not been activated, and the vehicle is towed, the gearbox may be seriously damaged. There is also a risk of personal injury.

If the engine cannot be started, the brake booster will not function. This will require significantly more effort to brake, and the braking distance will increase considerably.

If the battery is disconnected, the steering column cannot be unlocked. Do not disconnect the battery before unlocking the steering column.

Always check that the steering column is not locked before towing.

The vehicle must be towed in a forward direction with all four wheels on the ground. Towing in reverse with two wheels on the ground will cause severe damage to the gearbox.

Towing the vehicle for distances over 50 km (30 miles) is prohibited. Do not exceed a speed of 50 km/h (30 mph). Towing for longer distances or at higher speeds may cause severe damage to the gearbox.

Do not tow the vehicle if the gearbox is not in neutral (N) or if the electronic rear differential is locked.

To prevent vehicle damage, follow this procedure carefully:

  1. Secure the recovery vehicle's towing attachment to the towed vehicle's front towing eye. Refer to section 274, 'Towing Eyes'.
  2. With the parking brake engaged, switch on the ignition to ensure the steering column lock is disengaged.
  3. Press the brake pedal and move the selector to neutral (N).
  4. Activate the emergency parking brake disengage function.
  5. Leave the electronic key in a secure location within the vehicle.
  6. Before towing, disengage the parking brake.

Caution: Leaving the ignition on for extended periods will discharge the battery.

After towing with all four wheels on the ground:

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Switch on the ignition and press the brake pedal.
  3. Move the gear selector to Park (P).
  4. Deactivate the emergency parking brake disengage function.
  5. Switch off the ignition and remove the electronic key from the vehicle.
  6. Release the recovery vehicle's towing attachments from the front towing eye and refit the cover.

Caution: Exercise extreme caution when disconnecting towing equipment. The vehicle may roll if on an incline, which could lead to serious injury.
