Preparation for Use
Follow instructions specific to your model. Points 1-3 apply to C2 and C4; start at point 4 for C3 (connected to central water system).
For C2 and C4 Models:
- Open the external access door and turn the water filling funnel outwards. Remove the cap.
- Add Thetford toilet fluid for the water tank via the funnel for a cleaner flush and fresh water. Then, fill the water tank with clean mains water.
- Screw the cap back on and turn the funnel back inside. (Note: 150 ml water remains in the funnel when the tank is empty).
For C2, C3, and C4 Models:
- Remove the waste tank by pulling the safety catch downwards.
- Pull the waste tank outwards to its stop, tip slightly, and remove it completely.
- Place the tank upright and turn the emptying spout upwards.
- Remove the cap (with measuring cup) from the emptying spout. Pour the recommended quantity of Thetford toilet fluid into the waste tank to break down waste, prevent smells, and keep the tank clean. Add approximately 2 litres of water to cover the bottom. Screw the cap back on and return the spout to its original position. (Note: The cap is supplied with the manual). Warning: Never add toilet fluid via the valve blade or toilet bowl.
- Slide the waste tank back into position via the access door. Note: Do not force if it doesn't fit easily, as this can cause damage.
- Ensure the waste tank is secured by the safety catch. Shut and lock the access door.
Use
Point 10 applies to C2 and C3 models; start at point 11 for C4.
For C2 and C3 Models:
- Run water into the bowl by pressing the flush button. The toilet can be used with the blade open or closed. To open the valve, turn the valve blade handle counter-clockwise. Your Thetford toilet is now ready for use.
For C4 Model:
- Add water into the bowl by twisting the flush handle to the right. The toilet can be used with the blade open or closed. To open the valve, turn the valve blade handle counter-clockwise. Your Thetford toilet is now ready for use.
For C2, C3, and C4 Models:
- After use, open the blade (if closed) by turning the valve blade knob (C4) or flush knob (C2/C3) to the left. Flush the toilet by twisting the flush handle (C4) or pressing the flush knob (C2/C3) to the right. Close the valve blade after use. Note: Do not leave water in the bowl when the toilet is not in use, as this does not reduce smells and can lead to flooding.
Toilet Paper Storage (C2 and C3)
Toilet paper stays clean and dry in the integrated storage compartment. A wall holder for the toilet roll is also supplied.
Replacing toilet roll: Remove the holder from its compartment. Disconnect the two parts by pushing inwards and turning in opposite directions until a click is heard. Replace the roll. Reassemble and turn until they click. For best results, use Aqua Soft fast dissolving toilet paper to avoid blockages.
Emptying
The waste tank has a 20-litre capacity and must be emptied when the level indicator turns fully red. It is advisable to empty it earlier, as the indicator changes from green to red when the tank is 3/4 full. Note: Do not let the waste tank become too full.
- Ensure the valve blade is closed. Open the external access door. Press the safety catch downwards and remove the waste tank.
- Carry the tank by its handles to a normal toilet or authorized disposal point. Place the tank upright and turn the emptying spout upwards.
- Remove the emptying spout cap. Hold the tank by the upper handle near the spout. Use the other hand to operate the vent plunger with your thumb. Keep the plunger pressed while emptying to prevent splashing. Note: Press the vent plunger only when the emptying spout is pointing downwards.
After emptying, flush the tank and thoroughly clean the valve blade with water. If necessary, prepare the toilet for use again. Slide the waste tank back into the toilet and close the access door.
Storage
Follow these instructions if the toilet will not be used for an extended period.
For C3 models not used in winter: Before draining the central water system, open the cassette toilet magnetic valve by depressing the flush button and keeping it depressed (or place a weight on it) during draining.
For C2 and C4 Models:
- Completely empty the water tank via the drain pipe (also the level indicator). Remove the sight glass by pulling it downwards from the upper plug. Direct the draintube out through the access door opening to let water flow out.
For C4 Model:
- Flush manually a couple of times to completely drain the flush mechanism.
For C2 and C4 Models:
- Turn the water filling funnel outwards to further empty the flush system. Remove the cap underneath the funnel to allow remaining flush water to drain. The flush system is now completely empty.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Regularly clean the waste tank seal, automatic pressure release vent seal, and cap seal. Monthly cleaning is generally sufficient for frequent use.
Thetford recommends cleaning seals and the valve blade with Thetford Bathroom Cleaner.
Note: Never use household cleaners (bleach, solvents, or other strong cleaning agents) as they can cause permanent damage to seals and other components.
- Squirt Thetford Bathroom Cleaner into the toilet.
- Flush the bowl with water and wipe the rest of the toilet with a damp cloth.
- Tip: For a shining toilet, dry it with a soft, dry cloth after cleaning.
- Thoroughly clean the seals and valve blade, rub them with olive oil, and wipe with a cloth or toilet paper. Repeat if seals/blade are dirty or operation becomes difficult. Note: Never use Vaseline or vegetable oils other than olive oil, as they can cause leakage.
For long-term storage, clean seals and lightly coat with olive oil to keep them supple.
N.B.: The valve blade seal is a wear part and may need replacement over time depending on usage and maintenance.
Winter Use
The Thetford cassette toilet can be used normally in cold weather if the toilet is in a heated location. Otherwise, there is a risk of freezing. In such cases, drain the toilet following the 'Storage' instructions. For environmental reasons, the use of antifreeze (like that used in car radiators) is not advised.
