Introduction
The Thetford Cassette Porta Potti is a functional and aesthetically designed portable toilet for caravan bathrooms. It is constructed from high-quality plastics for durability and features a high-gloss finish for easy cleaning and maintenance. The unit consists of a permanently installed toilet system and a slide-out waste holding tank, known as the CASSETTE.
The toilet section includes a seal and cover, valve blade opener knob, flush knob, waste level indicator, built-in fluid storage compartment, a drain tube, and a fresh water tank. The Cassette section, located underneath the toilet, is removable for emptying via an external access door. Preparing for Use
- Open the access door on the side of the Caravan and swing out the fresh water fill funnel.
- Add the recommended amount of Aqua Rinse through the waterfill funnel for better flushing and hygiene. Fill the fresh water tank with fresh water using a hose or jerrycan until the water reaches the neck of the funnel. The tank capacity is 15 liters.
- Replace the cap. Swing the water fill funnel inward until it touches the side of the water tank.
- Note: 150 ml of water will remain in the fill bottle when the fresh water tank is empty.
- Remove the Cassette by pressing the retaining clip down and pulling the tank straight out. Tilt downward slightly if necessary.
- Position the tank vertically and swivel the pour out spout upward.
- Remove the spout cap. Remove toilet fluid from the storage compartment. Add the recommended amount of toilet fluid through the pour out spout. Add water until the bottom of the Cassette is completely covered. Replace the cap and turn the pour out spout to its original position.
- Note: The cap for the pour out spout is packed with the instructions. Hotter weather or longer retention times may require more toilet fluid.
- Caution: Never add toilet fluid through the valve blade or toilet bowl. Pressure buildup can cause contents to splash upward upon opening the valve blade if done too quickly.
- Slide the Cassette, with the pour out spout facing outwards, into the caravan through the access door. Ensure the sliding cover is correctly positioned with the arrows pointing towards each other.
- Make sure the Cassette is locked with the retainer clip.
Operation
Flushing:
- To prevent overpressure, open and close the valve blade once before use.
- Add water to the bowl by turning the flush knob clockwise. The knob will automatically return when released.
- After use, turn the valve knob counter-clockwise to open the valve blade, then turn the flush knob. This provides the best bowl rinse and most efficient water use.
- After flushing, turn the valve knob clockwise to close the valve blade. The toilet can also be used with the valve blade open, allowing waste to go directly into the holding tank.
Emptying the Cassette:
The Cassette has a capacity of 20 liters and should be emptied when the waste level indicator shows full red. The indicator only starts moving from green to red when the tank is over 3/4 full.
Caution: Do not allow the Cassette to become overfilled. Refer to the troubleshooting section for emergency emptying procedures. Ensure the valve blade is closed before emptying.
- Open the access door on the outside of the caravan and remove the Cassette tank by pressing the retaining clip.
- Carry the Cassette using the lower carrying handle, with the pour out spout upwards, to a suitable disposal point. Position the Cassette vertically and rotate the pour out spout upward.
- Remove the spout cap. Grasp the upper carrying handle nearest to the pour out spout. Place your other hand on the upper rear grip, depressing the air release valve button with your thumb while emptying to ensure smooth outflow.
- When empty, manually slide the cover towards the pour out spout. Rinse the tank and valve blade area with water.
- Note: Depress the air release valve button only when the pour out spout is pointed downwards.
- If necessary, prepare the toilet for use again (refer to steps 1-7). Slide the Cassette into the toilet and lock the access door.
Cleaning and Maintenance
The large seal and the seal for the ventilation should be cleaned and greased regularly (once or twice a month, depending on usage) with silicone spray or salad oil.
Clean the Cassette by rinsing it thoroughly with clean water. Clean the toilet bowl, seat, and cover with a moist cloth. Mild soap or washing-up liquid can be used if necessary.
If the toilet will not be used for an extended period, leave the cap off the pour out spout to allow the Cassette to dry.
Winterizing/Storage
The Thetford Cassette Porta Potti can be easily winterized for storage or cold weather use.
- Empty the fresh water tank using the drain tube. Position the drain tube outward through the door opening, pull off the plug, and drain the water.
- Flush a few times by turning the flush knob to drain the pump assembly.
- Notice: The Cassette must be empty. Empty the Cassette afterwards.
- Empty the water fill funnel by pulling the bottle away from the tank. Remove the small water cap at the bottom of the fill funnel to allow water to drain.
- Note: Do not tighten caps; this helps keep the unit dry.
Cold Weather Use:
The Cassette can be used during cold weather if the caravan or motorhome is heated. If the vehicle is not heated for more than a day or night, winterize the Cassette.

Troubleshooting
Problems - Solutions
- Bowl does not drain when toilet is flushed. Cassette is overfilled.
- Odours. Use the proper amount of holding tank deodorant as specified on the bottle.
- Soiled bowl after flushing. Partially fill the bowl to cover the soiled portion. The next flush will dissolve the waste. Tip: Leave the valve blade open during use.
- Cassette cannot be removed. Check for obstacles under the retaining clip. Depress the retaining clip several times to check operation. Ensure the valve knob and valve blade are in a partially open position. Close the valve blade by moving the knob clockwise. Caution: If the valve blade is open during Cassette removal, severe damage to the system can occur. Never force insertion or removal of the Cassette tank.
- Valve blade mechanism sticks or is hard to open. Spray a light film of silicone on the blade.
- Major unit malfunction. Contact your original caravan dealer.
