Audi MMI 3G Interface Manual
This interface allows video insertion into Audi MMI 3G screens, compatible with Audi A4, A5, Q5, A6, and Q7 models. It supports one RGB High Definition video, two AV inputs, and one reverse camera video, or iPod video.
Key Features
- Compatible with Audi MMI screens featuring a round-4Pin connector and resolutions of 800x480 (e.g., 2010 year A6/Q5) or 400x240 (e.g., A1/A4/A5/Q5).
- Allows control of DVD, TV tuner, iPod, or added RGB navigation computer via the MMI box and keys.
- Features a dedicated protection circuit for the video connector, preventing damage even with incorrect connections (e.g., connecting video pin to 12V).
- Utilizes a 1GHz bandwidth video cable for stable and clean video output, ensuring good compatibility across various screens.
- Passes temperature checks from -40°C to +85°C and is eMark certified.
1. DIP Settings
DIP switches control various interface functions:
DIP | Down side (=ON) | Up side (=OFF) |
---|---|---|
1 | RGB input enabled | RGB input disabled |
2,3 | AV1/AV2 input enabled | AV1/AV2 input disabled |
4 | RGB input = VGA resolution 800x480. | RGB input = NTSC resolution 400[or 480]x240. |
5 | AV4 video is selected when green wire goes to 12V (for aftermarket camera). | Car computer video is selected when green wire goes to 12V (for original camera). |
6 | This DIP should set to OFF. Setting to ON enables touch screen for inserted DVD or TV. | (Default setting) |
7,8 | 7UP, 8UP: 800x480 resolution (A6/Q7 cars). 7UP, 8DOWN: 400x240 resolution (A1/A2/A4/Q5 cars). 7DOWN: Output timing for BMW-CIC; may cause noise on Audi monitors; set DIP7 UP. |
(Default setting) |
Note: Incorrect DIP settings will not damage the unit. If an incorrect image appears, reset the DIP settings.
DIP4 Usage:
- DIP4 is used to set the RGB input resolution.
- If RGB input is VGA resolution, set DIP4 UP (NTSC resolution).
- If RGB input is NTSC resolution, set DIP4 DOWN (VGA resolution).
- Set DIP4 to match the input resolution for correct image display. This setting only affects RGB input.
2. System Connection
The car computer connector should be inserted into the main socket. The 4-pin LVDS connector should be inserted into the monitor's socket. AV1, AV2 audio are selected for output.
The MMI box has 3 keys for tuning color, brightness, and DVD/TV type.
3. MMI Wires Connection
Connect the MMI box to the car wires as follows:
MMI box | To car wires |
---|---|
Twisted with gray | Not connected to anywhere |
Twisted with blue | The white/grey wire behind the CD player. |
Big BROWN | Chassis ground |
RED with Fuse | Car ACC (key ignition) |
The blue wire of the MMI-box should be wired behind the CD player, onto the white wire with a gray strip.
Note: Incorrectly connected MMI wires will not cause damage, but correct connection ensures the data LED blinks.
4. MMI Operations
Use the NAVI key to switch video inputs: car video → inserted RGB → inserted AV1 → inserted AV2 → car video.
- Press CD: video image returns to car CD.
- Press RADIO: video image returns to car Radio.
- Knob Rotation and Arrow Keys: Used for navigation and selection in RGB input (potentially for aftermarket navigation) and for controlling DVD, TV, and iPod via OSD in AV1, AV2 inputs.
- The DVD type can be set to "none" using the three side keys on the interface to disable the OSD.
- The installer can set the DVD type to "Prog." using the interface's side keys.
- The gray wire between the CAN box and interface can be cut off to remove original knob control functions.
5. The 3 Side Key Buttons
The input box has three side keys (menu, +, -) for adjusting picture display and touch functions for connected devices.
Menu Key Usage:
- 1st press: Shows left OSD options.
- 2nd press: Shows right OSD options.
- 3rd press: Hides the OSD window.
- Use +/- keys to edit items and the menu key to move to the next item.
DVD, TUNER, NAVI Items: These relate to IR output for RGB, AV1, AV2 inputs, with pre-programmed brands. The installer can set the brand to "PROG" to program IR codes or "NONE" to disable pop-up icons. In "NONE" mode, the 'power' icon at the top-left can turn off the device, and the 'SRC' icon at the bottom-left can switch inputs.
H POS, V POS: Adjusts image location on the monitor to compensate for different video player outputs (PAL or NTSC).
6. The Ctrl Port
The Ctrl port has 8 pins, primarily for installer convenience when additional devices are connected.
Pin | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | +5V output voltage for sound switch relay (when AV1 selected, OV when AV2 selected). Max output: 2A. | Used for connecting to AUX stereo input in Ford cars. A mechanical relay can be used to switch sound, activated by this pin (+5V). |
3 | Constant +5V when the unit is working. Max output: 2A. | |
4, 8 | GND | Tied to GND inside. |
5 | Data bus for touch screen | Should NOT be connected to GND. Leave open for normal use. |
6 | Clock bus for touch screen | Should NOT be connected to GND. Leave open for normal use. |
7 | +5V output voltage for touch screen switch relay (5V for inserted video mode, 0V for original car video mode). Max output: 2A. | Can be used to switch the original touch screen for imported cars with installed navigation computers. |
