Upon receiving the unit, inspect for shipping damage and verify model number, cooling size, and electrical characteristics.

[!] WARNING: If unit appears damaged or refrigerant leak is suspected, do not install. Contact a licensed repair person.

[!] WARNING: Auxiliary devices that are potential ignition sources shall not be installed in ductwork. Do not use unapproved devices in ductwork. Consult Friedrich before drilling panels. Store appliance to prevent mechanical damage.

[!] WARNING: Any person working on refrigerant circuits must be certified. All safety procedures must be carried out by a competent person.

[!] WARNING: Check cabling for wear, corrosion, pressure, vibration, sharp edges, or other adverse environmental effects.

[!] WARNING: Do not use potential sources of ignition (e.g., halide torch) for leak detection. Use approved methods like electronic leak detectors or leak detection fluids. Avoid detergents with chlorine.

Charging Procedures: Ensure no refrigerant contamination, use short hoses, keep cylinders upright, earth the system, label the system, and do not overfill. Pressure-test with purging gas and leak-test after charging.

Recovery Procedures: Remove refrigerants safely using appropriate cylinders and equipment. Ensure recovery equipment is in good working order and calibrated. Return recovered refrigerant to the supplier. Evacuate compressors and oils to remove flammable refrigerant before returning. Do not mix refrigerants. Ensure work area is safe and fire extinguishers are available.

Checks to Refrigerating Equipment: Ensure electrical components are fit for purpose. Verify refrigerant charge, ventilation, secondary circuits, markings, and protection against corrosive substances.

Checks to Electrical Devices: Perform safety checks on electrical components before connecting power. Discharge capacitors safely. Ensure no live electrical components are exposed. Check earth bonding continuity.

Repairs to Sealed/Intrinsically Safe Components: Do not repair; replace sealed or intrinsically safe components.

Decommissioning: Familiarize with equipment, isolate electrically, ensure handling equipment and PPE are available, supervise recovery, use calibrated scales, pump down system, remove refrigerant, do not overfill cylinders, and ensure cylinders are removed promptly. Recovered refrigerant must be cleaned and checked before reuse.

Labelling: Label equipment as de-commissioned and emptied of refrigerant. For flammable refrigerants, ensure appropriate labels are present.

Minimum Clearances

Diagrams illustrate required minimum clearances for VRP units installed on exterior walls. Specific distances are provided for side-by-side installations (12" apart), multiple units (60" between units or pairs), adjacent units on the same floor (64"), vertical clearance (60"), units 6" off the ground, and units facing each other (108"). Grill clearance requirements specify a minimum of 72" from the exhaust for major obstructions (fences, walls) and 24" for minor obstructions (lamp poles, shrubs).

Installation Orientations

Diagrams show top views for front, left, and right installation orientations, detailing required dimensions for wall openings, access doors, and clearances (e.g., minimum 3" clearance, 27" access door cut-out, minimum 8" required for left/right installations).

Rough Opening Dimensions

A table provides exterior wall rough opening dimensions for the VPAWP1 plenum, specifying a width of 24 5/8" and a height of 30 7/8". It notes that the distance between the rough opening and the finished floor/platform must be 3/4".

Preliminary Plumbing

Wall Plenum Installation

Describes the installation of the VPDP2 drain kit, requiring cutting away gasket material from the inside wall plenum. The VPDP2 is placed, ensuring its back lip inserts 2" into the exterior opening and is secured to the floor or platform. Final drain installation options are presented: running the condensate line to the left, beneath the platform, or to the right of the unit. Option 4 (running back toward the unit) is prohibited. It emphasizes ensuring the drain path is not blocked and hand-tightening fittings.

Louver Installation

Provides instructions for louver installation, either prior to or after wall plenum installation. Prior installation involves attaching the louver to the outside plenum half with screws. Post-plenum installation on elevated floors requires securing the louver with a tether, turning it sideways, pushing it out, aligning holes, and inserting fasteners. Final wall plenum and louver installation involves ensuring the weather strip provides a continuous seal and adjusting set screws to make contact with the exterior louver.

Unit Installation

Outlines unit placement prior to installation, stating that all louver, plenum, plumbing, drain kit, and rough wiring steps must be completed before final installation of the air conditioning chassis. The unit is moved from its shipping base, inserted into the wall plenum with approximately 2" penetration for a complete seal, and connected to the drain port and ductwork.

Ductwork Installation

Specifies that supply air duct connection is the installer's responsibility and should follow industry best practices. Sheet metal or duct board can be used for transitions. Avoid sharp transitions for optimal blower performance. A minimum of 12" (18" preferred) is recommended from the unit discharge to the final reduced-size transition.

Wall Controller Installation

Instructs users to consult the Instruction and Operational manual for the VRPX*4 Thermostat for detailed installation. VRP units are compatible with wired or wireless thermostats via an RJ-45 connection and are only compatible with the Friedrich VRPX*4 controller.

Electrical Installation

Details electrical installation steps, including removing the front unit panel to access the terminal block. It specifies that replaceable fuses must be Time Delay/Slow Blow, 3AB 1.0A, 400VDC. Wires are inserted through a punched-out hole and fastened according to color coding (Green to Ground, Black to L1, Red to L2).

Return Air Door Installation

Describes two options for return air door installation. The door is supported by a hinge on one edge and a latch on the other. The kit allows for return air openings to be positioned low (Option 1) or high (Option 2) on the door; the high position is recommended for increased sound reduction. The door panel can accommodate a filter, usable only when the door is in the lower orientation and the main unit filter is removed. The unit should not be operated with both filters installed.

FreshAire™ System Set-Up and Operation

Explains the optional FreshAire™ System, which delivers outside air through a filter into the indoor space. The system can have a single or dual outdoor air fan and filter. To engage the system, flip the switch to the ON position; the unit automatically engages and disengages fresh air based on settings, with the damper opening on a call for fresh air. The filter is accessed through the front of the unit.

Basepan Heater

Notes that VRP models ending with 'L' are equipped with a basepan heater that engages and disengages automatically based on outdoor ambient and base-pan temperatures.

VRP Limited Warranty

Friedrich Air Conditioning Co. provides a limited warranty for the VRP Variable Refrigerant Packaged Heat Pump. The warranty covers defective parts for one year from installation or 120 days from purchase, whichever comes first. The sealed refrigeration system is covered for an additional four years (total five years) for parts only, excluding labor. Warranties apply to units installed in the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Canada, provided installation and operation comply with instructions, local codes, and trade practices. Warranty excludes damage from accident, abuse, misuse, corrosive atmosphere, unauthorized modifications, improper matching, lack of maintenance, improper installation, acts of God, or operation during construction. It also excludes costs of installation, disconnection, dismantling, and routine maintenance parts like air filters. To obtain service, contact an authorized Friedrich distributor, dealer, or contractor. Implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose are limited to one year. Friedrich is not liable for incidental, special, or consequential damages.
