How to Re-key Your SmartKey Lock
These steps show you how to change from the current key that operates the lock to a new key you want to operate the lock. For new purchases, the current key is the one that was supplied in the box with the purchased lockset. The new key must be the same key type (KW1) as the current key. Consult your local hardware store for more information.
Before performing this procedure, make sure the lock is installed on the door. Re-key the lock while the door is open.
Note: Re-keying instructions are the same for all products with the SmartKey feature.
Tools Needed
- Current Key
- SmartKey Tool
- New Key
Step 1
Insert the Smartkey tool (B) fully and firmly into the hole. You may feel the tool click inside the lock.
Step 2
Turn the Smartkey tool 90 degrees.
Step 3
Make sure the new key (C) is FULLY inserted into the lock.
DO NOT remove key. Perform test procedure below.
Test Procedure
While the key is in the horizontal position, attempt to pull it out of the lock.
If the key does NOT remove, you have successfully re-keyed your lock. You may now remove the key.
If the key DOES remove, re-keying was not successful. Repeat steps i-iv on the reverse side.
Troubleshooting
Problem: New key will not turn inside cylinder.
Cause: New key was not FULLY inserted during re-keying procedure. Cylinder was misprogrammed to operate with key only partially inserted.
Solution: 1. Slowly pull key out of cylinder while gently jiggling it to find the depth at which the key was programmed. If successful, turn key 90°. 2. Repeat steps ii-iv. Make sure key is FULLY inserted.
If the cylinder must be reset, this procedure can be performed at your local hardware store or by a locksmith.
Problem: New key continues to be pulled out of the cylinder during test procedure, but it is still able to operate the lock.
Cause: The new key used during the re-keying procedure was an inaccurate copy of the original or is an older key with worn out cuts.
Solution: Re-key the lock with a factory-cut key (a key cut in the manufacturing plant), or with a code cut key (a key cut by using the factory code without the use of a key copier).
Problem: A copy of the new key will not operate the lock.
Cause: New key is worn out with dull cuts, or it is an improperly cut copy.
Solution: Re-key the lock with a factory-cut key (a key cut in the manufacturing plant), or with a code cut key (a key cut by using the factory code without the use of a key copier).
