Appliance Safety
Your safety and the safety of others are very important. This manual and your appliance contain important safety messages. Always read and obey all safety messages. Failure to follow instructions can result in serious injury or death.
Safety messages identify potential hazards, how to reduce the chance of injury, and what can happen if instructions are not followed.
⚠ WARNING ⚠
To reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, or injury, follow these basic precautions:
- Plug into a grounded 3-prong outlet.
- Do not remove the ground prong or use a 3/2 adapter.
- Do not use an extension cord.
- Avoid plugging into outlets controlled by wall switches.
- Disconnect power before servicing.
- Replace all parts and panels before operating after servicing.
- Use nonflammable cleaners.
- Keep flammable materials and vapors, such as gasoline, away from appliances.
- Use two or more people to move and install the appliance.
NOTE: Drawer refrigerators are equipped with anti-tip brackets. Always install them prior to use.
Proper Disposal of an Old Appliance
Old appliances can be a suffocation hazard to children.
- Remove doors from your old appliance.
- Leave shelves in place.
- If the appliance contains refrigerants, it must be recycled by a licensed service or disposal company.
Installation of Your Appliance
NOTE: Allow the appliance to sit upright for 24 hours before turning it on to allow the compressor lubricant to drain.
- Remove packaging materials.
- Remove tape and glue residue from surfaces. Use a small amount of liquid dish soap, warm water, and your fingers. Rinse and dry. Do not use sharp instruments, rubbing alcohol, flammable fluids, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the appliance surface.
When Moving Your Appliance
Appliances are heavy. Protect the floor when moving for cleaning or service. Always pull the appliance straight out; do not wiggle or "walk" it, as this can damage the floor.
Clean Before Using
- After removing all packaging, clean the inside of the appliance. Refer to "Appliance Care" for cleaning instructions.
- Some upright models have leveling legs. Level as necessary for best operation.
- If your appliance has casters, lock the brakes after moving it into place. Always unlock before moving for cleaning.
Key Eject Lock (some models)
To lock or unlock, hold the key in the lock while turning. The lock is spring-loaded; the key cannot be left in the lock. If the key is lost, contact your dealer or SUMMIT APPLIANCE for a replacement. Provide the model and serial number when requesting a key. Keys can be ordered online at www.summitappliance.com/support.
Location Requirements
Allow 4" (10 cm) clearance at the top and sides, and a 1/4" (0.64 cm) clearance between appliances. Models with "BI" in the suffix are designed for built-in use and require minimal clearances, except at the back where at least 2" is needed. FF590, SCR610BL, and ACF48W models are also built-in capable.
CAUTION: Keep flammable materials and vapors, such as gasoline, away from the appliances. Failure to do so can result in fire, explosion, or death.
Ensure the floor can support the weight of a fully loaded appliance. Allow at least 4" (10 cm) of airspace at the top and on both sides, and 4" between the back of the appliance and the wall. If placed next to a wall, allow extra space on the hinge side for the door to open wider. Do not install near heat sources (oven, radiator), where temperatures fall below 40°F (5°C), or in direct sunlight.
Electrical Shock Hazard:
- Plug into a grounded 3-prong outlet.
- Do not remove ground prong.
- Do not use an adapter.
- Do not use an extension cord.
Recommended Grounding Method
A 115 Volt (AC only) 60 Hz grounded electrical supply with a 15- or 20-amp fuse or circuit breaker is required. A separate circuit serving only your appliance is recommended. Use outlets that cannot be turned off by a switch or pull chain. Do not use an extension cord.
Leveling Your Appliance
Locate the two front leveling legs (often taped among packing materials). In many models, these legs are pre-mounted.
- Screw the front legs into the bottom of the appliance. The back rests on two fixed supports. (Built-in models have rear level legs for more precise leveling).
- Adjust the front legs to lift the cabinet slightly off the floor.
NOTE: If your model has front rollers, lower the front legs enough to lift the rollers off the floor to prevent the appliance from rolling forward when the door is opened.
- Place a leveling tool on top, first side-to-side, then front-to-back. Turn a leg counter-clockwise to raise a corner, or clockwise to lower it.
- Repeat step 3 until the appliance is level.
- After the appliance is fully loaded, recheck the level.
If equipped with casters, the two front casters have brakes. Keep brakes locked, and unlock only for moving.
When Using Your Appliance
- Ensure proper airflow by not blocking air vents. Blocked vents hinder airflow and can cause temperature and moisture problems. Position contents to allow airflow between shelves or baskets.
- Allow the appliance to cool for at least 6 to 8 hours before adding contents. Allow 24 hours for temperature to stabilize.
NOTE: When first started, the compressor will run constantly until cooled (6-8 hours or longer depending on conditions). After cooling, it cycles on/off as needed.
- For optimum performance, the unit should be at least 30% full. For small loads, add water bottles or freezer packs for temperature stability.
- The appliance exterior may feel warm; this is normal as it dissipates heat.
Energy-Saving Tips
- Provide adequate airflow around the appliance.
- If manual defrosting is required, keep ice build-up to less than 1/2".
- Minimize door open time and shut securely.
Temperature Selection and Monitoring
Your appliance may have a mechanical (dial) or digital thermostat.
Manual (dial) Thermostats (on some models)
The thermostat knob is usually located inside or in the rear, towards the right-hand corner. Turn clockwise from STOP (0) towards higher numbers for colder temperatures.
- Higher settings (higher numbers) mean lower temperatures. The refrigerator temperature may drop below 32°F. Use higher settings only when required. A medium setting is recommended for normal ambient temperatures.
- Ambient temperature changes affect interior temperature; consider this when setting the dial.
- At STOP (0), the cooling system is off, but power is still supplied.
- Temperatures depend on door opening frequency.
- In units without interior fans, temperatures are coldest near the bottom and rear. Place contents accordingly.
NOTE: For optimum performance, the unit should be at least 30% full. For small loads, add water bottles or freezer packs for temperature stability.
Digital Thermostats (standard on all refrigerators, ACF48W, and VT65MLADA models)

Appliance Care
Defrosting
CAUTION: Never use a metal object to remove ice from the rear wall. Use a plastic ice scraper if needed.
Refrigerator models defrost automatically. Freezer models require manual defrosting. Before defrosting, remove contents and set the thermostat to OFF. Leave the door open until ice and frost are melted. To speed up defrosting, place a container of warm water (approx. 125°F) inside. Soak up melt water with toweling or a sponge and ensure the interior is dry before resetting the thermostat.
NOTE: Do not heat the freezer interior directly with hot water or a hair dryer, as this can deform the cabinet.
Cleaning the Appliance
Clean approximately once a month.
- Disconnect from power.
- Remove removable parts like drawers.
- Wash removable parts and interior surfaces with a clean sponge or soft cloth, mild detergent, and warm water. DO NOT use abrasive or harsh cleansers, window sprays, scouring cleansers, flammable fluids, cleaning waxes, concentrated detergents, bleaches, or petroleum-based products. DO NOT use harsh cleaning tools like paper towels or scouring pads, as they can scratch surfaces.
- For stainless steel and painted metal exteriors, use a clean sponge or soft cloth with mild detergent and warm water. DO NOT use abrasive or harsh cleaners, or cleaners containing chlorine. Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
- To remove odors, wash interior walls with a mixture of warm water and baking soda (2 tbsp per 1 qt water).
- Replace all removed parts.
- Clean condenser coils (located on the back or behind the base grille) regularly, possibly every other month. Use a vacuum cleaner with an extension attachment. This helps reduce energy use.
- After cleaning, plug in or reconnect power.

- Remove the light shield (most models require no tools).
- Replace the light bulb with one of the same wattage. Replacement LED bulbs are available from the parts department.
- Replace the light shield.
- Plug in appliance or reconnect power.
Loss of Power
In case of power loss, unplug the appliance. Once power is restored, allow 30 minutes for the refrigeration system to equalize. Keep the door closed as much as possible during this time.
NOTE: A full appliance stays cold longer than a partially filled one.
Moving the Appliance
- Remove stored items and tape shelves, drawers, and trays in place.
- Unplug the appliance.
- Clean it thoroughly.
- Tape the appliance shut and tape the electrical cord to the cabinet.
When moving to a new location, refer to the "Installation Instructions" and "Temperature Selection" sections for setup and control adjustments.
Maintenance of the Refrigerator/Freezer/Refrigerator-Freezer
- Report breakdowns immediately and arrange for alternative monitored storage for vaccines while the appliance is being repaired.
- Regularly check door seals for a good seal. Replace seals if damaged or if cold air is leaking.
- Defrost regularly if required to prevent ice build-up, which causes unstable temperatures and affects efficiency.
- If exposed coils are present on the back, keep them clean and dust-free to improve operating efficiency.
Checking the Door Seal
To verify the door seal is proper:
- Place a thin paper strip against the cabinet front.
- Close the door.
- Pull the paper strip. If it moves easily or falls away, the door seal or hinges need adjustment.
- Check all around the door, paying attention to corners.
- If a problem with the door seal or hinges is suspected, contact a trained repair technician.
Troubleshooting
Try these solutions first to avoid unnecessary service calls.
The appliance is not operating.
- Is the power supply cord unplugged? Plug into a grounded 3-prong outlet.
- Has a fuse blown or a circuit breaker been tripped? Replace the fuse or reset the circuit.
- Is the thermostat incorrectly set? See "How to Adjust the Temperature" on page 10.
The motor is constantly running, or running too much.
- Is it hotter than usual where the appliance is located? Motors run longer in warmer environments (typically 40%-80% of the time at normal temperatures).
- Has a large number of items been added? It takes longer to cool down with more items.
- Is the door frequently opened? Warm air entering causes the motor to run longer. Keep the door closed.
- Is the thermostat set correctly? See "How to Adjust the Temperature" on page 10.
- Is the door completely closed? Push it firmly shut.
- Are the condenser coils dirty? Dirty coils prevent proper air transfer and make the motor work harder. Clean them (see "Cleaning the Appliance" on page 7, item #7).
- Does the unit have proper clearance? Models with "BI" require 2" rear clearance and minimal side/top clearance. All others need at least 4" clearance on all sides.
The temperature in the cabinet is too warm.
- Have you just added a large number of items? It takes time to cool down.
- Is the thermostat set correctly? See "How to Adjust the Temperature" on page 10.
There is excessive moisture inside the appliance.
- Is the door opened frequently? Humidity from the room enters and causes moisture build-up, especially in humid environments.
The door is hard to open.
- Is the door gasket dirty or sticky? Clean the gasket and the surfaces it touches. Rub a thin coat of paraffin wax on the gasket after cleaning.
