Quick Start Guide
STEP 1: Connecting external devices, such as speakers, microphones and instruments
Before connecting:
- Ensure all connected devices are turned off.
- Turn the volume of any powered speakers or amplifiers to minimum.
Connection Example:
Microphones: Connect to CH1-CH4 MIC/LINE input jacks using XLR or phone plugs. If using condenser microphones, turn on the PHANTOM +48V switch. Ensure the GAIN and LEVEL knobs are set appropriately.
Instruments/Audio Devices: Connect to CH1-CH4 MIC/LINE input jacks or CH5/6, CH7/8, CH9/10 LINE input jacks using phone plugs. If connecting a high-output device like a CD player or keyboard, engage the PAD switch on the corresponding channel.
Speakers: Connect to STEREO OUT jacks (XLR or phone plugs) or MONITOR OUT jacks (phone plugs).
Headphones: Connect to the PHONES jack using a stereo phone plug.
Powering On: Turn on connected devices in the following order: Microphones, Instruments, Audio Devices, then the MG unit, and finally Powered Speakers/Amplifiers.
Powering Off: Reverse the order of powering on.
STEP 2: Getting sound to the speakers
- Ensure the rear panel POWER switch [/I] is set to the OFF position ( ).
- Connect the supplied AC power adapter to the AC ADAPTOR IN jack and a household power outlet. Secure the connection with the fastening ring.
- Set the STEREO LEVEL knob to the position.
- For channels with microphones connected, set the GAIN knob to approximately the 12 o'clock position.
- Set the LEVEL knob of each channel in use to the position.
- While playing your instrument or speaking into the microphone, raise the volume of the powered speaker or amplifier until the desired volume is reached.
- Set the LEVEL knobs as necessary to adjust the volume balance between channels.
Note on Volume Adjustment: Use the PAD switch, GAIN knob, and LEVEL knob to set the initial volume. Primarily use the LEVEL knob for subsequent volume adjustments.
Applying Effects (MG10XU/MG10X)
The MG10XU and MG10X feature high-quality built-in signal processing effects similar to the SPX series. Effects can simulate different performance environments.
- Turn the PROGRAM knob to select a desired effect program number (indicated by a flashing number on the display).
- Press the PROGRAM knob to confirm the selection.
- Turn on the FX ON switch.
- Set the FX RTN LEVEL knob to the position.
- Adjust the FX knob for the desired channel to control the amount of effect applied.
Effect Programs (List)
- 1 REV HALL 1-2: Reverb Time - Simulates concert hall acoustics.
- 3 REV ROOM 1-2: Reverb Time - Simulates room acoustics.
- 5 REV STAGE 1-2: Reverb Time - Simulates stage acoustics.
- 7 REV PLATE: Reverb Time - Simulates metal-plate reverb for a harder sound.
- 8 DRUM AMB: Reverb Time - Short reverb ideal for drums.
- 9 EARLY REF: Room Size - Isolates early reflection components for a 'flashier' effect.
- 10 GATE REV: Room Size - Cuts off reverb tail for a more powerful sound.
- 11 SINGLE DLY: Delay Time - Repeats sound once; shortening delay creates a doubling effect.
- 12 DELAY: Delay Time - Adds multiple delayed signals.
- 13 VOCAL ECHO: Delay Time - Echo designed for vocals.
- 14 KARAOKE: Delay Time - Echo for karaoke.
- 15 PHASER: LFO Freq - Cyclically changes phase for modulation.
- 16 FLANGER: LFO Freq - Adds modulation similar to a jet engine sound.
- 17 CHORUS 1: LFO Freq - Creates a thicker, ensemble-like sound.
- 18 CHORUS 2: LFO Freq - Multiplies sound for a thicker texture.
- 19 SYMPHONIC: LFO Depth - Adds modulation for a thicker texture.
- 20 TREMOLO: LFO Freq - Cyclically modulates volume.
- 21 AUTO WAH: LFO Freq - Wah-wah effect with cyclical filter modulation.
- 22 RADIO VOICE: Cutoff Offset, Drive - Recreates lo-fi AM radio sound.
- 23 DISTORTION: Pitch - Adds sharp-edged distortion.
- 24 PITCH CHANGE: Changes the pitch of the signal.
*LFO: Low Frequency Oscillator, used to modulate signals with different waveforms and speeds.
Troubleshooting
- Power does not come on: Check power adapter connection and outlet.
- No sound: Ensure powered speakers/amplifiers are on, check connections, ensure GAIN/LEVEL knobs are set appropriately, check PAD switches, and ensure STEREO MUTE is off.
- Sound is faint, distorted, or noisy: Check PEAK LEDs; lower GAIN or engage PAD switches if lit. Ensure GAIN/LEVEL knobs are not set too high. Lower the volume of connected devices. Check the TO MON/TO ST switch setting when using DAW software.
- Vocals/speech unclear: Turn on the HPF switches. Adjust equalizer knobs (e.g., lower LOW, raise HIGH).
- No effect applied (MG10XU/MG10X): Ensure FX ON switch is on. Check FX RTN LEVEL and channel FX knobs are set appropriately.
Mounting to a Microphone Stand
The unit can be mounted onto a microphone stand using the optional Yamaha BMS-10A microphone stand adaptor. Refer to the BMS-10A Owner's Manual for mounting instructions.
