Apple Watch Safety and Handling
Before using Apple Watch
Review the Apple Watch User Guide at support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/watch. The guide is also available via Apple Books. Retain documentation for future reference.
Safety and Handling
Handle Apple Watch with care. Apple Watch, its operating systems, and health sensors are not medical devices.
Materials:
- Aluminum Apple Watch case: 7000 series aluminum, Ion-X glass, composite back (plastic)
- Stainless Steel Apple Watch case: Stainless steel, sapphire crystal, ceramic back
- Titanium Apple Watch case: Titanium, sapphire crystal, ceramic back
- Ceramic Apple Watch case: Ceramic, sapphire crystal, ceramic back
Apple Watch contains sensitive electronic components and can be damaged if dropped, burned, punctured, or crushed. Ceramic cases may chip or crack if dropped or subjected to forceful impact. Do not use a damaged Apple Watch (e.g., cracked screen, liquid intrusion, damaged band) as it may cause injury. Avoid heavy exposure to dust or sand.
Repairing: Do not attempt to repair Apple Watch yourself. Disassembling it may cause damage, loss of water resistance, and injury. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service. More information is available at support.apple.com/watch/repair/service.
Battery and Charging
The lithium-ion battery should be serviced or recycled by Apple or an authorized service provider. Batteries must be recycled or disposed of separately from household waste. For information on battery service and recycling, visit apple.com/ca/batteries/service-and-recycling.
Charging: Use the included Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable or Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock and power adapter (sold separately). Third-party 5W power adapters with an MFi logo may also be used. Keep Apple Watch, charging cable, and dock in a well-ventilated area while charging. Using damaged equipment, non-MFi certified solutions, or charging when moisture is present can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage.
Avoiding Hearing Damage
To prevent hearing damage, do not listen at high volume levels for long periods. More information is available at apple.com/ca/sound and in the User Guide.
Medical Device Interference
Apple Watch, some bands, the charging cable, and charging dock contain magnets that may interfere with medical devices like pacemakers. Consult your physician and medical device manufacturer for guidance on maintaining a safe distance. Stop using Apple Watch if you suspect interference with your medical device.
Not a Medical Device
Apple Watch is not a medical device and should not substitute professional medical judgment. It is not designed for diagnosing, curing, mitigating, treating, or preventing disease. Consult your healthcare provider before making health decisions.
Medical Conditions
Consult your physician before starting or modifying an exercise program. Exercise cautiously and stop if you feel pain, faint, dizzy, exhausted, or short of breath. If you have a medical condition that could be affected by Apple Watch (e.g., seizures, blackouts, eyestrain, headaches), consult your physician.
Explosive and Other Atmospheric Conditions
Charging or using Apple Watch in potentially explosive atmospheres may be hazardous. Avoid environments with high concentrations of industrial chemicals. Obey all signs and instructions.
High-Consequence Activities
Apple Watch is not intended for use where its failure could lead to death, personal injury, or severe environmental damage.
Choking Hazard
Some Apple Watch bands may present a choking hazard to small children. Keep these bands away from small children.
Skin Sensitivities
Some people may experience reactions to materials in wearable items due to allergies, environmental factors, or irritants like soap and sweat. If you have known skin sensitivities, take care when wearing Apple Watch. Wearing it too tightly or not keeping it clean and dry may increase irritation. Remove Apple Watch periodically to allow skin to breathe. If irritation occurs, remove Apple Watch and consult your physician.
Nickel exposure from stainless steel or aluminum cases, bands, and magnets is unlikely, but customers with nickel allergies should be attentive. Apple Watch and bands contain trace amounts of acrylates and methacrylates, which are designed to not be in direct contact with skin.
Materials meet U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, European, and international standards for jewelry.
Exposure to Liquid
Apple Watch is water resistant, not waterproof. It can be used during exercise, in the rain, and while washing hands. If splashed, wipe with a lint-free cloth. Minimize exposure to perfume, soap, solvents, detergent, acids, acidic foods, soapy water, insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye.
Apple Watch Series 3, 4, and 5 have a water resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010, suitable for shallow water activities like swimming. They should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or other high-velocity water activities.
Water resistance is not permanent and may diminish over time. Avoid dropping Apple Watch, exposing it to soap or soapy water, perfume, solvents, high-velocity water, or using it in a sauna or steam room.
Not all bands are water resistant (e.g., stainless steel and leather bands).
Cleaning and Care
Keep Apple Watch, the band, and skin clean and dry, especially after workouts or heavy sweating. Dry thoroughly after exposure to fresh water. Clean Apple Watch if it contacts substances like dirt, sand, makeup, ink, soap, detergent, acids, acidic foods, or liquids other than fresh water that may cause stains or skin irritation (e.g., sweat, salt water, pool water, perfume, insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, oil, adhesive remover, hair dye, solvents).
How to clean Apple Watch:
- Turn off Apple Watch.
- Remove the band.
- Wipe Apple Watch with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. Lightly dampen with fresh water if necessary.
- Dry with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth.
To avoid damage:
- Do not clean while charging.
- Do not use external heat sources (like a hair dryer) to dry.
- Do not use cleaning products, ultrasonic cleaners, or compressed air.
The front of Apple Watch has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating that wears over time. Cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish this coating and scratch the glass or sapphire crystal.
Buttons, Digital Crown, Connectors, and Ports: Never apply excessive pressure or force connectors into ports. If they don't join easily, check for obstructions and ensure correct alignment.
Cables: Avoid bending cables sharply, as this can cause fraying or breaking. Inspect cables regularly for damage and discontinue use if damaged.
Magnetic Charging Cable and Magnetic Charging Dock: Discoloration of the charging surface due to dirt and debris is normal. Clean the surface with a damp, nonabrasive cloth and dry with a lint-free cloth before resuming charging. Do not use cleaning products.
Operating Temperature
Apple Watch is designed for ambient temperatures between 32° and 95° F (0° and 35° C) and storage between -4° and 113° F (-20° and 45° C). Extreme temperatures can damage the device and shorten battery life. Avoid dramatic changes in temperature or humidity.
If the interior temperature exceeds normal operating temperatures (e.g., in a hot car or direct sunlight), the device may attempt to regulate its temperature, which can result in:
- Charging slowing or stopping.
- Display dimming.
- A temperature warning screen appearing.
- Data transfer pausing or delaying.
- Apps closing.
For cellular models, cellular connection or calls may be affected. Normal functionality resumes after cooling. Emergency calls may still be possible.
Important: Do not use Apple Watch while the temperature warning screen is displayed. If the device cannot regulate its temperature, it may enter Power Reserve or a deep sleep mode. Move Apple Watch to a cooler location out of direct sunlight and wait before trying to use it again. Refer to Apple Support for more information on acceptable operating temperatures.
Magnets: Keep key cards and credit cards away from Apple Watch, bands, and charging accessories.
Band Care Information
Third-party bands may not fit properly, may interfere with Apple Watch features, or may contain materials causing skin sensitivities. Use only Apple-branded or authorized bands.
How to clean Apple-branded bands: Remove the band before cleaning. Follow care information provided with the band for non-Apple bands.
For leather bands, wipe with a lightly dampened, lint-free cloth. Air dry thoroughly. Do not store leather bands in direct sunlight, high temperatures, or high humidity. Leather bands are not water resistant.
For other bands and clasps, wipe with a lightly dampened, lint-free cloth. Dry thoroughly. Stainless steel bands are not water resistant.
