Managing Mealtime Insulin with Set Units
A guide for patients using Tandem Diabetes Care insulin pumps, including the t:slim X2 and Tandem Mobi systems.
Understanding Set Units
Set Units is a method of managing mealtime insulin where a consistent amount of insulin is administered before each meal. This dosage is not adjusted based on the food consumed or current glucose levels. For instance, a patient might consistently take 10 units of insulin before lunch. It is essential for patients to consult with their healthcare professional to determine if this method is appropriate for their individual needs and to establish the correct insulin dosage.
Entering Set Units for Tandem Insulin Pumps
The process for entering set units is guided by the insulin pump's interface, ensuring ease of use for patients. While specific screen layouts may vary slightly between models like the t:slim X2 and Tandem Mobi systems, the core steps remain consistent.
General Steps for Entering Set Units:
-
Tap Bolus:
Navigate to the bolus screen on your pump. This is typically the starting point for administering insulin.
-
Correction Bolus Prompt:
The pump may present a prompt asking if you wish to add a correction bolus based on your current blood glucose (BG) reading. You can choose to add a correction bolus or decline it.
-
Enter Set Units:
Input the pre-determined set units for your mealtime insulin. This involves tapping the unit field and entering the specific number.
-
Confirm Insulin Amount:
Review the total insulin amount to be delivered, which may include your set units and any correction bolus. Confirm the amount to proceed.
-
Deliver Bolus:
Follow the final prompts to deliver the insulin. This often involves tapping a specific button or icon, such as a blue drop, to initiate the delivery.

Control-IQ® Technology Integration
Tandem Diabetes Care's advanced Control-IQ® technology is integrated into these systems to enhance diabetes management. This technology provides automatic insulin adjustments every five minutes, responding to the user's glucose levels. It also offers helpful AutoBoluses, which can be beneficial if a mealtime bolus is forgotten, ensuring continuous support and potentially improving glycemic control.
