Terrain Response System
This document provides a comprehensive overview of the Land Rover Terrain Response system and related vehicle functionalities.
Using the Terrain Response System
The Terrain Response system allows the driver to select different modes to optimize vehicle performance for various terrains. The system is activated by turning a rotary selector. Six Terrain Response programs are indicated around the selector.
The Automatic mode automatically selects the most suitable program for the current conditions. To engage Automatic mode, press the rotary selector if it is in the raised position.
Detailed information on each Terrain Response program and its corresponding icons is displayed on the touch-screen via the Extra features menu. Select the Terrain Response icon, then the information icon to view the text describing the current program.
Terrain Response Programs
General Program (Special Programs Off)
This program is suitable for all road conditions and off-road driving. It should be engaged before driving on hard surfaces such as dry gravel, dirt roads, or wooden decking.
When a special program is disengaged, all vehicle systems revert to normal settings, except for Hill Descent Control (HDC). If HDC was manually selected, it remains active.
Grass, Gravel, Snow
Use this program when the surface is covered with loose, soft, or slippery material like grass, gravel, or snow.
Note: For driving on thick gravel, the 'Sand' program is recommended.
Note: If the vehicle struggles in deep snow, try disengaging the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Re-engage DSC after clearing the difficult section.
Mud-Ruts
This program is for driving through mud, ruts, soft, or uneven surfaces. A low range gear is recommended. If not selected, the information panel will prompt you to engage it. Engaging 'Mud-Ruts' with low range automatically raises the suspension.
Sand
Use this program for surfaces primarily covered with soft, dry sand or thick gravel.
Note: If the vehicle struggles on soft, dry sand, try disengaging DSC. Re-engage DSC after clearing the difficult section.
If the sand is wet/damp and deep enough to cause wheel spin, use the 'Mud-Ruts' program.
Rock Crawl
This program is for driving on rocky terrain, including crossing streams with submerged rocks. It provides excellent control at low speeds. This program can only be engaged in low range. If engaged in high range, the information panel will prompt you to select low range.
Dynamic Mode
This program is more about driving style than surface type. It optimizes the vehicle's traction and handling characteristics for road driving, enhancing feedback and system responsiveness. Use this program to utilize the vehicle's full potential.
Note: Dynamic Mode automatically disengages when low range is selected.
Hill Descent Control (HDC)
HDC limits the vehicle's speed when descending slopes. For some Terrain Response programs, HDC activates automatically. HDC can be manually engaged or disengaged independently of Terrain Response.
The information panel displays the status of HDC: whether it is engaged or not, and if it was engaged by the system or the driver.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) engages automatically when a special program is selected, but it can be manually disengaged.
HDC Operation
HDC can be engaged at speeds below 80 km/h (50 mph) and operates at speeds below 50 km/h (31 mph). It can be used in Drive (D), Reverse (R), and all CommandShift gears. When in Drive (D), the most suitable gear is automatically selected.
Note: HDC automatically engages with certain Terrain Response programs.
If the system's engagement criteria are not met, the HDC warning lamp will flash, indicating it is engaged but not active. Refer to page 73 for details on the HDC indicator (green).
The set HDC speed is displayed as a green marker on the speedometer.
If HDC is disengaged while operating, the indicator will flash, and the vehicle will gradually increase speed.
If the vehicle speed exceeds 50 km/h (31 mph) while HDC is engaged, HDC operation is temporarily suspended. The HDC indicator will flash, and a message will appear on the information panel.
If the vehicle speed exceeds 80 km/h (50 mph), HDC will disengage, and the HDC indicator will extinguish.
Pressing the brake pedal during HDC operation will cause a pulsation. HDC resumes when the brake pedal is released.
Note: HDC automatically disengages if the ignition is switched off for more than 6 hours.
Adjusting Descent Speed
Each gear has a set maximum speed. The vehicle's speed increases only on slopes steep enough to generate sufficient kinetic energy. Pressing the '+' button on a gentle slope may not increase the vehicle's speed.
Each gear also has a set minimum speed.
If the HDC system detects a fault, the message 'HDC FAULT SYSTEM NOT AVAILABLE' will appear on the information panel, and the system's operation will gradually cease.
If a fault is detected while HDC is operating, its operation will gradually cease. Contact a dealer or authorized workshop as soon as possible.
Gradient Release Control (GRC)
When the vehicle is stopped on a slope with HDC active, GRC engages (except when the Sand Terrain Response program is active). If the driver releases the brake pedal when ascending a hill, GRC automatically provides a delay and smooth release of the brakes for a gradual start. When descending a slope, similar braking lock and gradual release of the brakes are used for a smooth HDC engagement.
GRC operates for both forward and reverse driving and does not require driver intervention.
Warning Messages
Do not attempt to descend steep slopes if HDC is not operating or if warning messages are displayed.
Brake Temperature
In extreme conditions, HDC may cause brake temperatures to rise above the set limits. In such cases, the message 'HDC TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE' will appear on the information panel. HDC operation will gradually reduce, and the system will become temporarily inactive. Once the brakes cool down, the message will disappear (or the indicator will extinguish), and HDC will resume operation if required.
Wade Sensing
The Wade Sensing system assists the driver when crossing water obstacles. It can be activated or deactivated via the 4x4i menu or Extra Features.
When active, the touch-screen displays the current water depth and maximum wading depth. The system warns the driver when approaching the maximum wading depth.
Warnings are displayed as messages on the touch-screen, instrument cluster, or as audible alerts.
If system limits are exceeded, the touch-screen display will dim.
Wade Sensing is disabled if the vehicle speed exceeds 16 km/h (10 mph). It automatically reactivates if the speed drops to 10 km/h (6 mph). If the vehicle speed exceeds 30 km/h (19 mph) for 30 seconds, Wade Sensing will automatically deactivate.
Note: Wade Sensing performance is enhanced if the suspension is set to off-road height. Refer to page 162, Off-Road Height.
Note: With the Off-Road 2 suspension height selected (page 162), and a gentle entry angle into the water, it is possible to wade through depths of up to 850 mm (33.46 inches). Ensure a gentle exit angle as well. Gentle entry and exit angles prevent any part of the vehicle from being submerged beyond the specified depth.
Note: Wade Sensing does not operate if the vehicle is equipped with deployable side steps, side protection tubes, or if the exterior mirrors are folded.
Note: The parking aid, automated parking system, and stop-start system are deactivated when Wade Sensing is active.
The Wade Sensing sensors are located in the lower part of the exterior rear-view mirrors. The sensors and the area beneath them must be kept clear of snow, ice, mud, and other contaminants. Dirty sensors may lead to inaccurate distance readings.
Note: For Wade Sensing to function correctly, the exterior mirrors must be in their normal (deployed) position.

CD/DVD players only play discs that comply with the Red Book audio standard. Playback of CDs not conforming to this standard is not guaranteed.
Playback of recorded (CD-R) and rewritable (CD-RW) discs is not guaranteed.
Playback of dual-format, double-sided discs (DVD Plus, CD-DVD) is thicker than standard discs, so playback is not guaranteed, and these discs may get stuck.
Only high-quality, non-deformed 12 cm (4.7 inch) discs are recommended.
The player supports CDDA (digital audio CD) and MP3, WMA, WAV, and AAC files.
The CD/DVD player has a slot for only one CD or DVD, but up to 10 discs can be loaded into the virtual storage. Only CDDA discs can be loaded into virtual storage.
